This is an actual news article on news.com.au now. I'm not going to link to it because they don't deserve your traffic.

Can they not even link you to where said experts have predicted?

Knowing news.com.au they actually asked saint what he thought, and therefore, posted it on the internets

Yeah, I saw it... and was about to post a comment like - WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOU IDIOTS.

Talk about scare mongering. Who the f*** decides what makes an article over there? They really are terrible.

AT first I though they might be talking about running out of IP4 addresses and how we need to start migrating, but then most people would have no idea what they are talking about, but then they crap on about bandwidth, yeah because they wont just upgrade the links, like they are already doing.

They obvioulsy have no comprehension of how many different links there are on the internet and saying that the internet is going to run out of space is such a dumb thing to say.

Sure there will be pockets of places that dont have enough bandwidth, but they all get upgraded eventually, unless its a third world or remote country.

End of Mayan calendar

Never quite understood that hysteria. When it gets to 11:59:59 on December 31st each year, we just roll over to 00:00:00 on January 1. What makes the Mayan calendar so different?

The mayan calendar ends on 2012. Either they have predicted the end of mankind, or they ran out of rock to chisel on.

Most scholars seem to think it's just the end of an age and that a new age will be starting (according to the Mayans). Most tin foil hat wearers think it's the end of the world or when aliens will come and enslave us :D

In my POV, a year means jacks***. Years are a human-coined measurement of time. It has no bearing what so f***en ever on natural events. Nuff said.

Actually they are an astrologically derived measurement.
The time for this planet to go around the sun.

It might be an earth centric measurement, but it isn't simply pulled from thin air.

Well yeah but its still has little bearing on what will happen in the future. Patterns are derived from seasons and whatnot but the universe isn't gonna decided hmm 2012 in human christian years sounds like a nice time to end the Earth as they know it.

Yeah I realised that a whole bunch of s*** is, but I meant stupid apocalypse theories etc etc. Ooh 2012 the Earth is gonna blow up. Htf does that make sense.

I bet this thread is gonna turn into a conspiracy flaming scientific war thing.

You dumbass, why does the Equinox and Solstice happen at the same time every year. Cos many natural events are based on the earth's movements around the sun, once a year. lol

Near earth "space" had some gas particles zipping around doing whatever gas does in extremely cold low pressure places.

ps. Even deep space is not completely empty.

Not to mention there is a f***tonne of dark matter missing, which is really disturbing if you think about it too much.

We really have NFI about our universe - baryonic matter is a minority player.

I read about this on Faceman's blog, www.tinfoilisnotenough.net, and have already started stockpiling internet for when supply gets low.

the plan is to sell my stockpiled internet once demand has pushed up the price above a trillion dollars a unit which should be around 2012 as confirmed by news.com.au.

We can not take the internet for granted any longer. We, as a planet, must stop over-logging... on. We must use the internet only when we need it. It's easy for us to think we can just use up all the internet we want, but if we don't treat the internet with the RESPECT it deserves, it could one day be gone forever. So we must learn to live with the internet, not for it. No more browsing for no apparent reason, no more mindlessly surfing on our laptops while watching television, and finally, we must learn to use the internet for porn only twice a day... MAX.

Start a campaign to encourage people to reuse their existing porn, and not download new porn. It's a sacrifice but one that will make the world a better place.

Wasn't it bleeding obvious that the Internet was going to run out of space at some stage? I mean, just look at it. It's a small box to begin with and there's even less space when you account for the wires needed to operate the flashing light. The Elders of the Internet warned us about needing a few quid to buy a bigger box a long time ago.

I think if we don't do something soon, the internets will fill up, and it will be too heavy to keep on your computer, so we will need bigger computers if you want to send someone an internet.

The motive behind the yet-to-be-published study is probably to get more people to support download caps.

http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2008/08/ipv4_vs_ipv6_when_a_billion_numbers_isnt_enou.html

A little over a year ago, I wrote an article about the IPv4 address consumption with the subtitle IPv4 Address Space: 2.46 Billion Down, 1.25 Billion to Go. A week ago, we reached the magic number of 2.7 billion IPv4 addresses used. With 3.7 billion possible addresses,¹ this means we now have less than a billion unused IPv4 addresses left. There are 39 blocks of 16.78 million addresses in the IANA global pool and another 339 million addresses that have been given out by IANA to the five Regional Internet Registries, but not yet delegated to ISPs or end-users.

So, how long will a billion quench our thirst for addresses? Geoff Huston at the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre has written a script that downloads the relevant information and creates daily predictions. The current ones target 10 February 2011 as the moment that IANA will give out the last of its blocks to one of the regional registries, and 17 December 2011 as the day that the last RIR will hand out the last IPv4 address to an ISP (or end-user).

Just need to change the protocol:

The powers that be have been trying for some time to move the Internet to the next version of the Internet Protocol, dubbed IPv6, which is able to handle many more addresses. In fact, the number is somewhat mindboggling: 340 undecillion, according to this FAQ at NetBSD.org. That results in IP addresses that are more complex. For example, in IPv6, our blogs.chron.com server is at 2002:8250:1D7D:0:0:0:0:0.

IPv6 is 10 years old, and already is used across the Net. The latest versions of Windows, the Mac OS and Linux all work with IPv6. But there remains resistance to it, mainly because IPv4 is so entrenched, and because there are some standard practices that rely on it.

For example, if you have a home router, it gets an IPv4 address from your Internet provider, then hands out a series of its own IP addresses to the computers that connect to it, a process known as Network Address Translation, or NAT. When one of your machines requests information from somewhere on the Net, that data is then funneled back to the requesting computer by the router. In this way, your Internet provider needs to give you only one IP address, but you can have as many systems connected as the router will support. You can almost think of it as IP rationing.

At the moment, IPv6 doesn't work with NAT, and that will have to be dealt with as the IPv6 transition continues. NAT is so pervasive that the group in charge of IPv6 is considering adding the practice to the new standard to help speed adoption.

So in time you will just have to buy a new router. IPv4 will become the lower standard and IPv6 will become the newer standard. IPv6 is already in every single PC out there you just need to install protocols. No Biggy.
