Have been offered a government job (IT based) in Brisbane and I know a few people on here are gov employee's just wondering what your dress code is (I realise it might not be the same).

My current dress code is black pants etc and a work shirt with logo on it (financial institution and I'm not member facing) so have to do some shopping I guess. (have asked the new boss just waiting to hear and was curious).

sup clubcat, fellow qld govt it worker here
what dept, what pay level, what role?

i'd never really wear anything less than business pants, business shirt and black leather shoes. Some blokes like to wear that but polo shirts, but that's not really recommended if you're in a client-facing role.

Government job, sorry dude :)

Seriously though you should be able to get away with a pair of suit/dress pants, a long sleeve work shirt and probably no tie...especially being in IT. That being said on your first day I would come in with a tie to see what others are wearing.

I personally won't work anywhere that has a dress code any higher than jeans and a collared shirt. If they think making me more uncomfortable (or how I dress at all) while working makes me more productive, they obviously don't know the first thing about I.T. and aren't worth wasting time with.

We're a small team of code ninjas, everyone is visible to clients.

Business attire is therefore mandatory.

If I had a gimp somewhere hidden out the back punching out code I wouldn't really care what it wore.

Shirt, shorts and thongs are all I usually wear. Today I mixed things up and wore actual shoes, mainly just because I need new thongs.

Might be getting a job at a big energy company soon, internal IT support, surely I dont have to wear the usual black pants and business shirt for an internal job?

Haha I was about to say this. Wtf is so uncomfortable about a well fitted business shirt and pants? There's also the added bonus of looking like you have a real job.

Some do, like me. Others wear polo's and jeans / polo's and slacks.

Might get lucky, might not.

I'm in professional services, so I sometimes deal with my client's clients. It pays to look somewhat professional.

+1. My brain turns off if i wear casual clothes to work. Plus people take you more seriously when you actually wear work clothes to work. There's no prize in dressing like you're going to the beach.

RM Williams moleskin slacks
RM Williams comfort craftsman dress boots
Company polo when visiting clients, otherwise whatever shirt looks respectable and has a collar (polo, button-up short, button-up long, etc)

As long as I'm wearing the company logo when visiting clients, it's a pretty casual dress code. Still, I wouldn't feel right about rocking up in boardies etc. Dress the way you want people to treat you. Dress like a bogan surfer, you'll get treated like one. Dress like you mean business, get treated as such.

Exactly. Taro Cash or Pierre Cardin shirts and pants, and either Julius Marlow or Florsheim shoes. Anything else is crap or a rip off.

Since the government is full of dicks, I'd suggest a life size condom as your work suit. You'll fit right in.

I'd be a rebel among my peers if I started wearing a tie. My work atire consists of a t-shirt, pair of shorts, shoes and my hat (worn backwards coz that's how I roll). Oh, and an apron, a leather apron.

work pants, work cotton/acryl shirt minus tie... unless one of your interviewers wore one at your interview.

they do it for the power-trip that can follow...

get the job, learn the systems in the organisation, then do what admins 'do' with users.

you're a 'priest' remember dude.. don't abuse your powers.

I wear a suit pretty much every day, but the jacket hangs on the door of my office.

I ditched the tie most days a few months back and have now even worn jeans on a friday and cotton pants on days where I have no meetings!

Rebel without a cause!

My work has casual dress code, so its generally t-shirt and jeans or whatever your comfortable in. In summer I bust flipflops, boardies and a t-shirt.

Of course if visiting a client site or doing a client meeting then smart dress is expected (suit or suit no tie).

Easy rear access?

I work for a rubbish company and still wear long pants and a long sleeve button up shirt.

I wear skate shoes with skulls on them and my boss defended me when someone gave me s*** for wearing them.

Fridays are jeans and a collared shirt day.

I do IT for the government. I wear jeans and button up smart-casual shirts to work with leather shoes (whatever colour goes with what I'm wearing). I'm kind of a rock star in the public service, and I'm lucky enough to look presentable in almost anything I wear.
