Dustin Hoffman is leading a lobby group to get sci-fi movies to respect the laws of science as deemed by the National Academy of Sciences.

News article

I totally don't support this. I imagine there are a LOT of things in sci-fi movies that people would refute. Even things historically in sci-fi that have not been possible, have since become reality. If producers and directors start demanding script rewrites we could lose the sorts of ideas that inspire scientists in the first place.

April fools come early this year or something? Last time I checked movies were all about making s*** up, not obeying the laws of something or other.

I'll join any group that protests against crappy sequels, tv-to-movie remakes and s***ty CGI special effects.

Say "No" to noise in space.

Seriously, in space no-one can hear you whatever, but there have been very few productions where this was recognised. Firefly is about the only sci-fi TV show that comes to mind where sapce was silent.

Simple solution: Introduce Jack Bauer or Chuck Norris into every movie, and they can create the physics/whatever required to make the SciFi adhere to the newly created rules.

Check and mate!

i heartily support thier putting s*** on 'the core' for being a complete bag of flaming arse... but there are plenty of unrealistic sci-fi that i like & have no desire to see made more realistic... like star wars, xmen, etc..
there are definitely a lot of movies that throw realism out the window & are just too stupid though... the core, sunshine, etc..
Firefly is about the only sci-fi TV show that comes to mind where sapce was silent.

alien... it's tagline was even 'in space no one can hear you scream' ;) event horizon had silent space too iirc.

as much as i like good space science... i rekn it'd make a pretty boring movie for most viewers.

The Cylons toasters without their pew pew pew pew noises would just have been boring if it was deathly silent

i haven't seen 'knowing' but i watched 'next' starring cage on the weekend & it was pretty damn silly. :P this dude can see 2mins into his own future... but everytime he 'looks' into his future he can change it. the stupid part is he seems to be able to do a near infinite amount of 'looks' into his future & each look takes zero time :P had a few funny moments though & was mildly entertaining.

This genre already exists and it's called hard scifi. Soft scifi is a lil'lot more fictional.

Or did you miss the science part?

There is a whole other genre called FANTASY where you can make up whatever the hell you want.

I haven't read the article, but the question is how many things has science actually ruled out as impossible for all time (as opposed to just impossible with our level of understanding)

not only the stupidest ending, but also one of the lamest and most predictable beginning to middle parts, too.

DO NO SEE THIS MOVIE. IT WAS BOLLOCKS.

I predict that within 100 years, computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive that only the five richest kings of Europe will own them.

Its already happened in A future but we have not reached That future yet and maybe never will.
Planet Of The Apes is set in a possible future not an Implausible Future.

Ive always thought Planet Of The Apes is a little like the racial challenges that faced the Slaves in America.
The Apes were slaves to humans who eventually overpowered their cruel masters and created a new world that turned its back on technology and reverted to a fundamentalist Religion based on the teachings of The Lawgiver their Messiah.

The slaves had become Master and Master had become slave.
An upside down world set in the future.
That is Science Fiction.
