Well looking at their site, it appears casual is the dress around town .. even has one bloke in a wife beater.

I interview a lot of people and I always like to see them make more effort for an interview than they would to turn up to work day in, day out. Dressing well, having shiny shoes and so on, all adds to the impression you give the interviewer. You are trying to impress the interviewer into giving you the job, so go all out I say.

I'd go shirtless.

i just did the 3 tier interview process and i think i nailed the atire part.. first interview i was smart casual, second i was suit and tie, third i was suit no tie after seeing what everyone else was wearing

Turned up for an interview today without a tie and unshaven, it was only for a Senior Tech Job, I didnt realy want the job, but I was just applying for everything, They didnt nominate a pay scale in the add and just said generous.

Anyway I got the job and they want to pay about 10k less than i want so I said ill get back to them.

Should have worn that tie then.

Also, job agency's suck, f***ers dont even put me forward for stuff, unless you get in as soon as the job goes online. Surely they should be looking for the best person, not the first person.

I've now had 4 job interviews this year, 2 I had a call back within the hour saying I got the job, 1 gave me the job on the spot, the other called back to say they decided to promote internal people, so they job didnt exist anymore.

So it seems if the job people actually put me forward for the job, i get it.

If you're a software developer, and you're not presenting to clients, then yeah I think a suit is overkill.

I work in a law firm in IT and I get away without a suit and tie - although I probably should wear a tie, but no one has said anything yet and it's been 3 years :)

Firstly, I've worked in construction then both corporate and small business environments. Dress appropriately for the job or you come off looking like some pretentious prat if you wear a suit.

Went the whole hog, even splashed on some fancy after shave and am now looking at round 2 next week.

Typically I would do the whole suit + tie thing, but when a company advertises itself as a casual and relaxed environment with guys wearing SINGLETS then I had to get a second (or 40th) opinion.

Unfortunately a few on the right hand side fail, and if you fail on that side you are in a lot more strife than if you fail on the left hand side.

Although i think you've over-simplified it because there are many more reasons, the first half of your point is valid. I strongly disagree with the second part though.

Bats*** I am not so much self-employed as a business owner. I do work for a salary presently, but I am wholly responsible for the affairs of my family's company and eventually will own it.

So there's not much point having an easy come easy go employee mentality is there.

Owning and running your own business requires you to be a certain type of person, which most people arent, extremly self motivated, live to work, risk taker etc

And alot of business owners fail, not becuase they arent smart enough or didnt work hard enough, but becuase factors outside there control deemed it to be that way, its a right time right place kinda thing, obviously a realy ambitious person will just try again after failure, but alot of people just arent in the position to do that.

I dunno about the other professional fields but it's pretty damn hard in engineering - just looking around quietly. Chief Engineer in a respectable company might get $130k.

hard, maybe. unpossible, no.

I would say not unpossible at all, particularly in the enterprise sector, you can get high up, have a fat salary, and not really have to do anything. I know lots of people like this. My flatmate is a PA for a high up dude in the public sector, one of 3 PA's, and they pretend to do work for him because he has nothing to do.

Random example yes, but its exists everywhere. The question is if you'd be happy with that or whether you have the personal drive to be achieving s*** with your life.
