So I got a job interview lined up tomorrow and it says "Dresscode: Corporate" .. I was going to wing it in my suit without tie job but a few friends have popped up and said the whole deal is required. Help me QGL, you're my only hope (thus far).

wear a suit with tie, you want to be dressed at least as well as the people working there or you'll come off badly.

Don't work there, they made up a dresscode. Also dresscode isn't a word, so they made that up too.

I interview a lot of people and I always like to see them make more effort for an interview than they would to turn up to work day in, day out. Dressing well, having shiny shoes and so on, all adds to the impression you give the interviewer. You are trying to impress the interviewer into giving you the job, so go all out I say.

Turned up for an interview today without a tie and unshaven, it was only for a Senior Tech Job, I didnt realy want the job, but I was just applying for everything, They didnt nominate a pay scale in the add and just said generous.

Anyway I got the job and they want to pay about 10k less than i want so I said ill get back to them.

Also, job agency's suck, f***ers dont even put me forward for stuff, unless you get in as soon as the job goes online. Surely they should be looking for the best person, not the first person.

I've now had 4 job interviews this year, 2 I had a call back within the hour saying I got the job, 1 gave me the job on the spot, the other called back to say they decided to promote internal people, so they job didnt exist anymore.

So it seems if the job people actually put me forward for the job, i get it.

I usually overdress a bit for interviews. I don't think anyone's going to say "Oh that person was a little too presentable"

Yeah same, where the good work shoes that are still shiny and a tie, never gone the suit jacket, seems a little wanky to me for a tech job.

So i have interviewed quite a few people in my time, one allways stands out.

This guy wore a safari suit.

Then when the interview started he was very, i mean VERY confident. He knew everything we wanted to, i asked him why is he was dressed in a safari suit - he said

"Because there are plenty of people in suits, i have no problem wearing one, in fact i love wearing them. How ever, i want you to remember me. I want the job."

He got the job.

Nothing quite as funny as seeing a tech in a suit get covered in dust an crap....
An I think that once the current suit wearing crusty generation have retired, most people won't care how much you spent on your suit, it will go back to whether you can do the job.

I don't ever want to have to work for a company where you're required to wear anything better than jeans and a tshirt. Anyone who thinks wearing a suit makes you perform better as a software developer shouldn't even be allowed to work in the industry, thanks. There's a good reason I don't apply for client-facing roles.

If you're a software developer, and you're not presenting to clients, then yeah I think a suit is overkill.

I work in a law firm in IT and I get away without a suit and tie - although I probably should wear a tie, but no one has said anything yet and it's been 3 years :)

Depends on the role, always has and will.

There's been generational change in this s*** for hundreds of years without it really changing. Today's live free and unfettered young dude is tomorrow's crusty old c*** bitching about the little prick in the interview in thongs.

Unless your applying for a job as a deckhand/diving instuctor, you turn up to a job in thongs, you ain't getting the job,
Firstly, I've worked in construction then both corporate and small business environments. Dress appropriately for the job or you come off looking like some pretentious prat if you wear a suit.

dress for the position you want years from now, not the one you have (or are applying for in this case)

I literally wear shorts and a tshirt to work every day (working in IT) but you can bet your sweet ass when I had the interviews I was wearing a suit & tie

Went the whole hog, even splashed on some fancy after shave and am now looking at round 2 next week.

Typically I would do the whole suit + tie thing, but when a company advertises itself as a casual and relaxed environment with guys wearing SINGLETS then I had to get a second (or 40th) opinion.

Suit and tie to the first interview, unitard with your balls hanging out one side to the second round.
It shows you can adaptable, fresh and sexy. When asked a question tug thoughtfully on your ball hair. It shows you are listening intently and really considering your answer.

My personal opinion is PAYG employee is good while you are young, before first house, etc. Makes paperwork simple

Your own business later when you know how the system works (ATO) and you are prepared to accept the responsibility of finding work for a lot of other people and manage cash-flow risks (companies not paying what they owe you). The only exception to this would be if you want to start a business that is heavily in demand for some reason - then it can sustain a lot of hits because presumably it will be high-profit.

Le Cock your pretty picture is missing the reason - the reason why the right hand side makes more money is because they are prepared to accept the associated risk. Unfortunately a few on the right hand side fail, and if you fail on that side you are in a lot more strife than if you fail on the left hand side.

Although i think you've over-simplified it because there are many more reasons, the first half of your point is valid. I strongly disagree with the second part though.

Bats*** I am not so much self-employed as a business owner. I do work for a salary presently, but I am wholly responsible for the affairs of my family's company and eventually will own it.

So there's not much point having an easy come easy go employee mentality is there.

Owning your own business is obviously the only way to get super rich(lottery excluded), but being just an employee can get you a pretty decent income to buy most of the things you wanted and still have a family life.

Owning and running your own business requires you to be a certain type of person, which most people arent, extremly self motivated, live to work, risk taker etc

And alot of business owners fail, not becuase they arent smart enough or didnt work hard enough, but becuase factors outside there control deemed it to be that way, its a right time right place kinda thing, obviously a realy ambitious person will just try again after failure, but alot of people just arent in the position to do that.

This isn't necessarily true (depending on your definition of super rich). It's possible to pull in several hundred thousand a year in select professional fields (law, medicine, finance, engineering etc)

I dunno about the other professional fields but it's pretty damn hard in engineering - just looking around quietly. Chief Engineer in a respectable company might get $130k.

In Le Cock's diagram, on the B&I side, i'd like to see what percentage of people own the vast majority of the 95% wealth. I'd say within that there'd be a similar figure of ~20% of the B&I people account for ~80% of the B&I wealth.
Just remember quite a number of super wealthy people started life as everyday joes working for big firms doing normal people work. The usual secret is, is that they didn't accept that as their life long situation, and did something about it, due to good luck, a bright idea, intensely hard work or a bit of all.

The thing is though, if you are making an executive salary you have a f***tonne of responsibility, and are probably working your arse off donig stupid hours just like the dude running a business.

Its pretty hard (effectively unpossible?) to get a cruisy drone job with no stress for 6 figures net.

I would say not unpossible at all, particularly in the enterprise sector, you can get high up, have a fat salary, and not really have to do anything. I know lots of people like this. My flatmate is a PA for a high up dude in the public sector, one of 3 PA's, and they pretend to do work for him because he has nothing to do.

Random example yes, but its exists everywhere. The question is if you'd be happy with that or whether you have the personal drive to be achieving s*** with your life.
