the book thread prompted this one..

I'm not one for dl-ing fiction pdfs and audiobooks, though I notice a lot of peeps at lans have enormous docco collections going back more than a generation.

what's your favourite docco(s) and why?

(given that we're legally allowed to link to 'some' plz do)

World at War - Narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier.
BBC History Series - WW1 and WW2

Why? Because I'm into history - military history, archaeology and modern history.

These two docos are close to the best on WW1 and WW2 and should encompass much of the footage used in the other WW2 docos.

Light hearted doco.

The King of Kong. Watched it assuming it was a mocumentary and kept assuming it was a moco, but it turns out its for real! Funny :) Think computer games player but.. paced like a rocky movie!

i agree with sc00bs on the planet earth ... although i have the povo dvd version ;) as long as ya don't watch it as a s***ty divx rip it's good.

i recommend all the bbc documentaries by adam curtis -
the trap (what happened to our dream of freedom)
the century of self
the power of nightmares

i don't fully support all the views in these docos but they have ideas worth considering.

I like that quantam physics doco about string theory... 'an elegant universe' or something. It is highly interesting. Talks about what the universe is made of, how it may have come to be, what our universe actually is in the scope of where the universe is, the problems with classic physics and the search for the ultimate unified theory, other dimensions.... etc... I'm not sure there is a better doco about this sort of stuff than this.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377171/ <-- har

Oh and King of Kong, a documentary about Donkey Kong. When you watch it - imagine the bad guy is Ben Stiller and the good guy is Owen Wilson. Awesome.

Do you mean you found the topic uninteresting or how it was presented? I guess it's not the sort of doco that grips you on an emotional level or anything, and you already have to be interested in the topic... So it was win/win for me!

The Corporation - really solid anti-corporation doco. The WW2 stuff is pretty badass, how Coke went and created Fanta so they could sell drinks to the nazi's without tarnishing their image. Also how IBM (USA) directly sold/serviced punchcard machines to the concentration camps and provided training to the operators at the concentration camps. Lots of interesting history about how "corporations" got their legal powers WAY back through a loophole that originally meant to give rights to the black slaves. Lots of crazy characters, like some stupid f***er that wants to privatize AIR and lots of bitches you want to c*** punch from marketing that have the most evil ways of viewing the world.

D'autres mondes / Other Worlds - French (get the subs version) doco about a guy that travels deep in the amazon to meet/live/TRIP with the shamans on ayahuasca (incredibly strong DMT brew). This filmaker gets his head absolutely turned inside out and goes through the most extreme transformation of conciousness while under the guide of the amazon shamans. Some of the footage you have to see to believe, these guys don't use psychedelics like the western world, the doses are out of this world and the rituals before/during/after the use of DMT are supposed to magnify the effects 100x. Doco is supported with lots of scenes/interviews with doctors/psychiatrists/psychologists/chemists etc.

This guy gets absolutely PWNED.

I've not watched a lot of doccos but one I have which I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend is "BUDS Class 234, which is like US Navy SEAL training stuff (entry level). It's pretty amazing to see how hardcore you have to be to get into the SEAL programme.

There's a bunch of it illegally uploaded to google video by the looks if you want a taste

nats, that Pallywood one is such a perfect example of what's going on there. Too bad people are too blind to see it. Would love to see how quickly that gets buried on Digg :)

Yeh actually I saw that Enron docco about 18months ago. If you watch it now its almost prophetic.

also ...
1. Startupdotcom (about the dotcom boom/bust)
2. Manufacturing Consent - Noam Chomsky

There should be some trailers on youtubez if you are interested.

Fitna, on live leak since they had the balls to stand up it despite the death threats to their staff. The man who produced it is under constant guard. Along with his family they are shuffled between safe houses every couple of days. At the same time his government is prosecuting him for hate crimes.

Submission, by Theo van Gogh. He received death threats for making it, but wouldn't change the way he lived his life. He was stabbed to death and had his throat slit in broad day light as he road his bike along a city street.

It was written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who is also under constant guard. She was a Dutch politician but they started action to strip her of her Dutch citizenship so she had to flee to America for a while. Her security detail is now paid for by donations.

Did anyone catch The Rise & Fall of the Russian Oligarchs on ABC or SBS last night?

Add that to the must see list.

about creepy japanese men and their dolls.

I have one of those dolls (at the start of the vid, not the end, lol) - about 20cm tall (sitting) seductive looking anime type chick. My gf brought it back from China - it's a jap rip-off though clearly.

It's interesting, it gets mixed reactions. I personally like it - it just sits on my cupboard and does not much.

I don't think my gf's dad likes it much though, although he's never really said anything about it. My gf likes it, she likes anything that's sort of trinkety and fashionable though.

You missed the "gf's dad". The apostrophe is used here to signify ownership :-P

Not only is it a feminine nickname - it's my real-life nickname, hahaha. Nearly everyone knows me as Pinky. People I see on a weekly basis don't actually know my real name. I fought it at first but you know how it is, you try and fight and peeps try harder to use it, so in the end I just accepted it. Now I roll with it.

My Uncle Greg made a Doco for the ABC called Killers Of Eden

Basically a Doco about this group of killer whales that used to help a family of whalers in Eden (Australia) hunt for Baleen Whales.

I quite liked Attenboroughs recent docos,

the blue planet
and
planet earth

more just incredible camera work then interesting facts.

also +1 for "the elegant universe."
there is lots more info on pbs.org under "nova"

The quest for cold I think it is, was fairly interesting. Is a doco about the quest of absolute zero.

got an old one I've been meaning to watch, Vietnam: the 10,000 day war. watched a good foreign correspondent report on the plight of the orangutan in SE Asia, showed the massive difference between old growth and palm oil plantations.. holy crap. also, the end of suburbia is a must see.
