Topic: PlayStation Network Has 20 Million Registered Accounts - Son...

Sony have just sent through word their Tokyo head office has revealed more than 20 million users have registered accounts with their free online service, PlayStation Network. According to the information we received, in just two years and three months Sony have accrued a fairly substantial number of users, however, it wasn't revealed just what percentage of the 20 million consistently use the service for online gaming, shopping or downloading.

It's still a fairly remarkable figure, but one that doesn't necessarily correlate to recent information suggestion the PS3 is still dwindling behind Xbox 360 and Wii sales.

Is PSN just for PS3, or is it also available for PS2/PSP or something?

Also, looking at the predictions on VGChartz, wooooop bring on MLB '09 The Show, can't wait! Hopefully it's not just prettier with updated teams and actually more polished than '08.

It does apply to PSP also, and I think you can use it for PS2 as well, so that makes more sense.

I'll try and suss how many Xbox Live users there are for a comparative look

How many on Xbox Live?
From:
http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/microsoft/archives/161658.asp

"We've said before that Xbox LIVE is experiencing incredible growth; in January we had more new LIVE members join than any other month in the history of Xbox LIVE," the spokesman said. "With more than 17 million active members, a majority of whom are paying members, LIVE is a rich social entertainment and gaming experience that is unmatched in the industry."
Also according to that article "just over half" of those are gold (paid) subscribers.

That's 17 million active though. If Sony's stats are correct, I'm guessing that must be counting every single throwaway account every registered on the service.

Thing is, a lot of people register more than one account because of their regioning. I have my normal account, an account for access to the US store and also one for the japanese store which I used once when GT5 prologue got released.

Yeah, I got 2 accounts registered on the PSN as well. Also, some of them could be multiple people living in the same house using the same PS3 but with different user accounts.

But you can't buy from the US store unless you have a Credit Card that has a registered address in the US???

You actually can now. Just like with Xbox Live (have done that myself via http://www.maximuscards.com/ ), you can buy the pre-paid PSN cards http://www.us.playstation.com/psn/PlayStationNetworkCard (off ebay, don't know any reputable dealers like maximus for PSN, if anyone does lemme know) and just enter the code to redeem the points.

Has anyone else noticed how Steve Farrelly's avatar of Fry looks like a cartoon version of trog's avatar?
