Yes it's Quake 3... with FFA, Duel, TeamDM, RA3 team gametype (called Clan Arena in this, don't think they have RA3 Duel/multiple team functionality) and CTF (with Team Arena weapons/runes) played in your browser (using an extension plugin).

Edit: Oh and also "updated" maps, which for most of them I think means just having a Quake Live sign shoved in somewhere, but for others weapons/ammo/armour has been significantly altered.

you don't have to play it in your browser, all the matchmaking and s*** happens on the browser, but the game itself runs in its own client full screen (if u want)
kos

Saying it runs in its own client is a bit misleading, it's still very much a part of the browser window you opened it from, but yes it does either play as a panel in the web page (ranging from 640x480 to 1024x768) or in proper full screen.

The website is f***ed - I filled in my personal details, email, etc... hit the button... and nothing... no thank you message or any email sent to me. My confidence in this service is low.

Yeh right, but like only a handful of them for the closed beta, right? Are there now enough to support an open beta?

I can't help but think that there won't be enough

So do you have to always wait to play or is this just for people who haven't registered yet? Like, if you're registered you can just hop straight on if there's a spot on the servers?

If I've gotta queue up all the time (much like file planet) then I'd rather just find my q3 cd & play some ra3/ctf that way with mates.

edit: in fact, bugger this waiting who's up for some REAL quake?

Hopefully a major goal of the open beta is to figure out how many servers they need to stop the stupidly long queues.

..waiting patiently.

Reminds me of the early days of WoW
Current position in queue:
3526
Estimated time until play:
Long after you've given up and gone to bed.

And then there were times when it would log you in while you’re distracted only to boot you after 5mins because you didn't pick a character.

Man, I hate to say it, but I'm f***ing embarrassed for id that they didn't realise this was going to happen.

It's been obvious for some time now that without sufficient server support, people can't play your goddamn game when it comes out. And if they can't play it when it comes out, especially if they've dropped a lot of money, it won't hit critical mass and it will NEVER take off.

This is a pattern I've seen repeated time and time again (with the exception of WoW, but I guess cuz you're still paying for it after you've bought the game you feel compelled to sit in a queue for 10 hours before playing the game). QL is a free game so maybe it'll be different again.

But seriously, for years now, there's been enough commercial GSPs out there who take game server hosting seriously to make developers realise we take that s*** seriously, and if they want their game to have enough servers they should just release a goddamn standalone dedicated server software package that any a****** can run. I appreciate the need to have some form of quality control, but if there's anything gamers know, its how to avoid s*** servers that don't run well, and they'll quickly go off to a better one without looking back.

It's also in BETA so I don't understand why people are getting their knickers in a knott.

In this interview here it says

So, in the couple months after launch, we will be putting together, more or less, a subscription option that allows players, for a very nominal fee -- something around like the $4.99 price point -- to also probably do other things, but the core functionality will be to allow players to, through the very elegant interface they have on the website, run their own game servers.

It's a free service that is paid for by advertising so I don't see a problem with them wanting some sort of control over who runs servers and what not.

Well I am because if they don't have dedicated servers for the beta then they prolly won't have them for the real release, so it doesn't bode well

If its a free service, logic (well my logic, anyway) dictates that they want to save costs wherever they can so any profit they DO make is maximised. What better way to do this than offload the responsibility of providing the most expensive part of the whole operation to a bunch of other people are are willing and capable to do it all completely and utterly for free - and, in all truth, do it better than they can.

I haven't looked into what all this is about BUT if it just means I open a browser and and play Q3 again, I'll do it.

Q3 was an awesome game and I miss it. But I really cbf buying it again, or acquiring a copy, and then going through all the patches etc just to get online and then find out that no one plays it anymore.

From what I was playing last night there was over 10 servers up (Duel, ctf, ffa, instagib and clan arena) with all of them full and more servers spawn when they are full so empty ones become available. I'd say at a guess there was over 100+ people playing on them with FFA, CTF, Clan Arena having most of those people.

If you want to be part of a BETA product, expect BETA problems. I've been involved in other BETA programs and they have been much much worse then what you are seeing here. I love people who bitch about being in a BETA and have problems like a game crashing etc and never report anything about it and just continue to whine about how bad it is.

Demon, I'm guessing after a few years of playing games like CS, DOD, BF etc some people are enjoying playing something basic and where they aren't getting smashed. Currently for quake3 on dedicated servers you'll only find people who have been playing for quite a while and they're on duel/ra3 servers where they're way too skilled for the newbies to enjoy.

Played it last night for the first time. Bored out of my scone within 15 minutes I'm afraid. It looks as though I have finally passed the stage where glorified Quake Style Deathmatch/CTF/RA type games have no more appeal to me.

I've tired of gamestyles that provide nothing more than run around madly with a limited set of guns, some powerups and that's it. I'm all into artillery, aircraft, tanks, vehicles and infantry. I get to use my brain moreso than my reflexes and at my age my reflexes aren't up to the same as an 18 year old whippet.

I played last night and after not playing quake3 for a few years amazingly I didn't come last in the server. I wonder how long the servers will last though, I keep checking the GA q3 servers and whenever I look they're empty and I wonder how long until quake live gets the same way.

Rev/Zy make sure the server query screen is not doing too much filtering, make sure you set all the filtering options to "Any" except the servers one. Mine was showing no servers sometimes because the default filter settings were too strict.

Here is an article that shows how wrong that line of thinking is.
Basically it is evidence that the brain's processing speed peaks at around 38 years old, I've read that original journal so it isn't made up (although it is extrapolated from the experiments)

Other studies have also shown that exercise can increase performance also.

So don't fool yourself into thinking that kids have better reflexes then you, unless you are over 40, in which case it sucks to be you! :D

Ditto. I don't get it... I loved and still occasionally still play Q3 against bots or my son and his friends, but the ship has sailed commercially. Seems to me they've run out of ideas and they thought they'd try and rekindle the hey day of id?

Meh, I'll probably still give it a go when it's being hammered less. I might not spend most of my time being alternately railed by Boba and Trog!

I was suprised too when i saw the ques are totally fixed. I got straight in (afternoon) and qued at 38 (peak time).

I think re-launching q3 in a browser is a sick idea. Its gameplay is still one of a kind and many of the younger gaming generation missed out on the original q3.

I got into Q3 just over a year ago, when you would join a server and get 50-0, and still somehow feel like playing the game till you improved. There are so many new players around now and they are all slowly improving.

There has already been 1 quake live tournament overseas.. maybe more? :>

Well atm my accuracy is about 10% off the pace with most players. However I tyhink my biggest problem is lack of map knowledge, just like any FPS knowing the maps is a huge part of the game but I would argue thats even more the case in Quake.
