Cricket lengend Commentary goes! its annoucing his retirement from Cricket Commentary next year

RICHIE Benaud, the voice of cricket in Australia for nearly half a century, has revealed his intention to retire from all cricket commentary.

Benaud let the revelation slip in a radio interview with 2GB’s Chris Smith today.

Benaud said: "I’ll be doing Australian cricket next year – 2010 – but I don’t do any television at all anywhere else now and when I finish next year, then I’ll be doing other things.

"But that’ll be no more television commentary."

Benaud began work in television after retiring from an illustrious playing career in 1964.

He worked extensively for Channel 9 in Australia, as well as the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK.

Famous for his beige jackets and witty remarks, Benaud retired from English commentary after the infamous Ashes series of 2005.

Awww. We've all grown up with him talking to us incessantly about cricket, as if he doesn't feel like family when you see him on the TV. I'm going to miss him heaps!

Watching cricket won't be same without Benaud's voice, although they've nailed some great commentators for hopefully the next generation to listen to.

I think it's probably about time. He is not as sharp as he used to be, and you can see Channel 9 have been preparing this for the last few years by moving Mark Nicholas into the 'host role' a bit more.

Hopefully I'll be back in Oz next summer to hear him for the last time!

When Mark Nicholas took over, Ritchie let his hair down and started having fun - some of his one liners in his commentary are priceless. Shame it has to end.

hm the durkastan idea is intriguing but the get f***ed suggestion is not without merit

I don't mind any of the commentators except for when they plug channel 9 tv shows. Surely they (ch9) know that no one watching a test match gives a f*** about domestic blitz or whatever.

Also when watching a 2020 match and some commentary douche (michael slater) goes "this is the rock and roll of cricket" or "this is where the kids take the parents to the cricket". Stop it please.
