you use these if you get trapped by fire. instead of suffocating on smoke, you suffocate on s*** fumes.

It's for inland countries, like the Czech Republic, and Canberra (lol?), where it's tough to get to the sea...

This is a patented invention called Toilet Snorkel. It allows you to breathe sewer air instead of smoke in case of a fire that blocks all escape routes from your apartment. Here are the instructions: when there is a fire and you are unable to escape in time, stay inside your bathroom, breathe fresh air from the sewage pipe until firemen are able to break in and save you from the burning inferno. If you happen to suck in any solid object into your mouth, don’t panic, simply spit it out and continue breathing.

U.S. Patent issued 1982

If it came with some sort of magazine rack, I'd get one.

If you are in a toilet and all your exits are blocked I'd say your chances for survival are limited - with or without sewer air.

I don't think its a bad idea at all considering that the sewer pipe vents to atmosphere on the roof of your house anyway.

yes, fresh compressed air

I'd just "Tommy Gavin" it and bail through a wall of fire to safety

it doesn't solve the problem of burning to death though.

though presumably that could be solved by pissing on yourself.

Damn right!

Also, this cross section is of an American toilet...it would need modifications for Australian toilet compliancey.

yeah doesn't mean that you won't inhale sewergas (which can be deadly aswell) because the vent can be 10 metres away...
