So I have a heap of photos all the same res that I want to scale down in one batch.

How do I do this?

the first thing you should install on xp is power tool image resizer, why its not part of windows i have no idea;

its like 500k, highlight your images, right click->image resize-> choose size-> done;

Another vote for irfanview, use it pretty much every day for games screenshots.

I batch processed 8000+ images the other day with Irfanview. It handled it gracefully.
