I am streaming movies from my wireless network through WMP11 onto my Xbox360, the majority of the videos work whilst watching them on the xbox360, but some of them have a cross next to them and do not run. I think there is some codec problem. In the past a similar problem occured but it allowed me to download the codec, now it is just stating a reference number and pointing me to the xbox website. Are there any xbox codec packs that you can download easily and install on xbox's.

theres some media which will just not work with xbox360's standard interface
I can't remember exactly what it is but it was the reason I gave up and started using my ps3 instead as a media center

it also suffers from a similar fate, which is why I then gave up on it and got an apple tv + running boxee/xmbc = works flawless with all codecs

this doesn't help you, however
basically I started converting my media to standard formats and got sick of it

I thought the 360 used whatever codec the PC did. So if the PC has the codec, the 360 should be able to play it.

Google the error code, because the error I got told me to install the proper codecs on the PC.

That's what I thought but I currently have some videos that play in WMP fine but the 360 won't play them.

I've really had it with computers and s*** lately.

I clicked on Outlook today (never used it on the laptop before) to set up my main email account. And it doesn't even work (gets error messages and closes down) ffs it's outlook for gods sake!

Yeah this is just PAINFUL.
Thus I bought a Media centre 2 years ago! And while it's not perfect, it runs everything I want it to.

There's one codec pack that Microsoft provide, and that's all. Here you can find all of the media formats the 360 supports. It's basically DivX and Xvid AVIs, WMV, and some h.264 content (provided they're in a specific container and have the right format audio).
I thought the 360 used whatever codec the PC did. So if the PC has the codec, the 360 should be able to play it.

This has never been the case, unless you're streaming the content using something like TVersity rather than WMP11. TVersity basically re-encodes the media on the fly into a format the Xbox can play, so you need to have a good enough CPU in your PC. If you're just playing SD content, you don't need a particularly fast CPU, so you should be fine.

This is why I now use my PS3 with PS3 Media Server. Everything just works, including 1080p MKV.

It says I can't install Tversity due to UAC (user account control) being active.

WTF is that and how do I change it? This is in Vista.

Right-click the installer and run as Administrator.

Or go into the User Accounts section in Control Panel, and disable User Account Control. Reboot and try again.

Ok cool, finally found that option. Switched it back to classic and it was there.

I've played a few videos by double clicking on them in Tversity and it fires up WMP (I'm yet to try on XBox) and it is jerking harder than Chub on formal night.

Is the little circle thing next to 'Settings' (up the top) supposed to be spinning all the time or is it refreshing something? If it's refreshing could this be why it's jerky?

The video normally plays fine in WMP.

Why doesn't anything just work :(

Well I just tried it on the 360 and it streams fine, finally some success! However it's still dodgy on the laptop :/

You don't use Tversity to play the files on your computer, just for streaming to the 360. Play your movies on your computer the same way you always have. And that spinning circle means it's refreshing the media library. It'll take a while the first time it does it, but it does stop.

Also be sure to go into the transcoding settings and up the maximum res for transcoded video. For some stupid reason it's set pretty low by default. I just set it to 1920x1080 when I installed it, because that's the maximum resolution my TV displays. That's not the resolution it will always use though, only if your source file is high.

Sweet, thanks for that.

The XBox feeds to two TV's. One's HD the other Full HD, so I'll just set it to HD and see how it goes. I really only stream low quality stuff so that should do.

It's also set to wireless by default...... changed that too.

I've upgraded my xbox1 to an Asus Nova PC ( about the size of a Wii ) running ubuntu+xbmc. It's great, plays 720p x264 content perfectly, and can play a fair bit of 1080p content. It's a full functioning decent Spec PC at the same time, Even has TV tuner ( windows drivers only tho ) and all sorts of fancy bits.

I struggled with xbox360 for media for a while, but it was just too hit and miss and I found myself going back to the xbox1 constantly.

any solution that requires either converting media before playing it, or wont play all medias is a pretty s***ty solution

Yeah those Nova PC's look the Biz for this sort of thing, however I need the games for the kids and I really don't stream that much stuff so hopefully Tversity has me on a winner.

You better make your 3,000 post a winner!

Yeah, that's exactly why I was contemplating building a HTPC for a long time. Some of the HD content on my PC (a minority, but still enough to be annoying) wouldn't play on my PS3 without having to re-encode it first. The 360 is even more limiting if you want surround sound. I was about ready to throw in the towel until I found the aptly named PS3 Media Server, which I mentioned above.

Anyone who streams media to their consoles and owns a PS3 should definitely check this out. It's much better than Tversity if you're using a PS3, because it's made specifically for that system. It has so far played every single file I've thrown at it, including 1080p H@L5.1 MKV files, which were totally out of the question with Tversity.

There is nothing you can do jab, I tried to fix this problem on my own 360, spent weeks chasing codecs and searching tech blogs. The basic jist is there are just simply some codecs (particularly audio codecs) that the xbox 360 cannot handle.

If you'd read any of the posts that I made or the one that Khel made, you'd have noticed that we suggested a media server that will transcode the media on the fly into a format the 360 supports.

It can, but I've never tried. If you try it but it doesn't work, jump on their forums and have a look in the Xbox 360 section, you'll likely find your answer in there.

tversity will transcode mkv yes. need a beefy pc if it's high def mkv.

but better to re-encode your mkv to mp4 using soemthing like GotSent. This only takes a few minutes for an hour long 720p file..and best of all you don't have to muck around with any settings.

the problem is that you're over-complicating things by using MS based technology to do something that a cheapie asian media player does for $50

it's not 1999 anymore. spending big bucks on a computer to do a $45 job is... well, STUPID

Unless you want to preserve surround sound, then you're s*** outta luck.

Find me one of these media players that can play 1080p H.264 videos with Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound in an MKV file. The only one I know if is the Popcorn hour, which costs more than a 360.

Hrmm, I'll have to check out this PS3 Media Server then, it sounds pretty sweet. That means I might finally have to run a second network cable out to my lounge room though, or get my consoles hooked up to wireless. For ages I've just had one network cable that I switch between the 360 and the PS3 depending which one currently needs network access (mostly its been plugged into the 360).

I've never understood how this saying came to be. People quite often eat their cake, there's not a lot else to do with it.

That aside, you can eat your delicious cake if you have a PS3, since you can remux to M2TS and preserve your audio in the process.

I'd probably go with the cable over wireless if you're going to be doing 1080p content to the PS3. Transcoding from MKV, while not to hard on your computers CPU, will most likely bring a wireless connection to its knees. PS3 Media Server has presets specifically for streaming over wireless, but I haven't tried them, so I have no idea how well it preserves the image. Over a wired connection, transcoded movies are damn near identical to the original, even when I pause it and walk right up to my screen. I was really surprised.

But if you're only really going to be streaming SD or 720p content, wireless is perfectly capable.

Yeah i'm trying to stream 720p over wired and 360 just gives me an error when attempting it. My computer is more than capable to transcode on the fly.

Are you using Vista Crakaveli?

When I used XP I had no need for Tversity as everything would play fine on the 360. However my XP machine is out of action at the moment so my laptop with Vista has taken over the role.

Video's would play on the laptop but not on the 360 through Media Centre. Would come up with some error about restarting console and/or computer.

Installed Tversity on the laptop yesterday and everything now works. (although I'm yet to test it with a wide variety of file types).

I opted for wired over wireless. We had an electrician here doing some stuff so he wired it through the walls etc so it's all neat and permanently networked.

Well that is not so true anymore, which really is no surprise. After switching everything off last night the XBox no longer sees the computer, although it can still access Live! through the router. The computer is also still able to connect to the net through the router.

Any tips on how to get them working again? The only thing that happened was my wife disconnected the laptop from where it sits (it's rigged up to wired LAN and external monitor/keyboard).

I have reconnected everything as it was but still no go.

mission: launch TVersity on the laptop, then right click the icon and select 'restart sharing'. Hopefully that'll fix it up for ya.

Yeah, whenever you have a problem detecting Tversity, restart the sharing service. 9 times out of 10, this will solve the problem. Not sure why this happens.

Under the status tab in Tversity it says

Devices
XBox 360

Server Messages
Detected XBox 360 at IP Address XXXXXX

Sometime it will display on the 360 Tversity Blah blah blah but when I select connect it tries for a while and then says no connection - check Firewall, firewall is turned off.

Giving up sounds like a good idea at this stage.

Definitely try restarting TVersity sharing.

For some reason I have to restart sharing AFTER switching on the 360, point blank refuses to stream anything until I do.
