i know there are a few car people here who have imported cars and i would like to know which insurers you went with? afaik not many companies insure imported cars, i know of nrma, just car & suncorp. nrma have given the best price so far. any others i should check out? (or ones that specify in 4wds?)

ive been with suncorp for years, comprehensive and they know about all my mods

im pretty sure suncorp dont do any new grey imports

nrma/racq wont touch imports

its pretty much just cars that everyone else signs up with, i dont think shannons are overly keen on imports

grey import is what the cars that are imported are classed as, if i'm correct.

If the car is older than 15years and is modified, it just needs to do a road worthy. If it's younger than 15years and is modified, all the modified parts have to be brought back to standard to comply to be imported.

What happens if when telling your insurer what mods you have you forget one or two things?

In an event they investigate it and you get no $$?

When sussing insurance i tried NRMA and Justcar

NRMA was more expensive, but would let me pay monthly.

Justcar was cheaper but needed it in a lump sum.

nrma will do imports but don't like any mods basically so it's pretty useless for most. can't be lowered more than like 30mm from stock height, no aftermarket intercoolers etc etc

My girlfriend drives a Holden Viva (made by Daewoo) and to be honest... its not too bad... its just completely gutless and it has a s*** gearbox.

I don't think its unreliable though - she hasn't really had any problem with it :D

Yeah
i drove a new astra wagon the other day
it's an opel/vauxhall i believe
and it was the biggest heap of s*** i've driven in a long time. suspension and handling were good, but the vibrations through the body on takeoff were terrible, reverse not linear ie increase the pedal movement by a small amount and you either get nothing or way too much. utterly gutless. I commented to my passenger 'i didn't think they made s*** cars anymore'.

Funny you say that MrH.

I just had a hire car for a month and it was the current Astra - best car I've driven for ages.

It took a bit of getting used to first, wierd buttons with diagrams that meant nothing, but after getting aquainted we fell in love.

Although the major sticking point was the auto tranny which let it down, but hey auto's let every car down, especially 4cyl cars.

Ours also had some vibration and a bad noise on takeoff but I suspect it was something repairable, there is no way it would be 'normal'.

I drove it down to Foster (3 hours north of Sydney) and back (~1,400km round trip) and it was awesome on the freeway, sure it was no fire breather in acceleration, but it cruised at 110 effortlessly, felt like it was gliding it was so at home at that speed.

If I was buying a small car it would be on the shortlist.

'i didn't think they made s*** cars anymore'.

Yes, they are every where.

Not for much longer, it got smashed up good and proper a month ago - hence the hire car.

I assume your next post will say 'Anything is better than a Camry'.

I'll I was saying is that for $21k, the Astra was a great car. I am directly comparing this to our Camry and other cars I regularly drive in particular 2001 Calais (crap) and TDi Golf.

The Tdi Golf has a kick arse engine but the rest isn't that much better.

no i'm not gonna say everything is better than a camry. i sure as hell would rather a camry over an astra, and over a lancer for that matter, another car i am forced to drive at times. but i suppose the astra would have similar characteristics to the camry which would feel normal to you. i can understand why you wouldn't like the krautmobile, but what's to dislike about a VX Calais?

is a VX calais better than a statesman? cos I hired a statesman recently to drive from sydney to singleton and back and it was a shocker. seats, steering, suspension, power, build quality. all horrible, it was just like riding in a taxi but it only had 9,000k's on it

Nah Jim, Statesman are supposed to be better than Calais.

Overall the Calais isn't horrible but for the asking price (of a new one) in the vicinity of $45k, there are much better options out there.

The whole car just doesn't work as a 'package'.
