I've just destroyed my 24" dell accidentally, the edge of the case bumped into it when moving it onto a desk
there's a fairly sized mark on it, incredibly difficult to get a photo of it but trust me its there

I think i might just have just torn the protective 'tint' stuff over the top of the LCD - am I dreaming?

It doesn't look like it has any dead pixels behind it but can you even repair these things or am I boned

Nah, I have always wondered this myself. I want to know if you can take the case off an LCD and put two side by side flush next to each other for a triple head 2 go type setup.

it is like 5cm right of the exact center

I can load different screens behind it and the color of the pixel changes like normal, its just got a hole in the protective tinted top layer
it looks like it should be replaceable and I'm considering giving this one a go soon
but if its going to cost half the price of a new 24" (they're 1/3 what i paid 12 months ago) I wont bother

My friends laptop screen broke, it would cost more to replace the screen than to buy an entirely new laptop. My guess is they'd just replace the panel rather than trying to tear off some layer of plastic because they'll have panels ready sitting there just swap them out. Screen repair can be REALLY costly at times.

Ring Dell and ask if they have any preferred repair shops around your area that deal with their products.
