Hi everyone,

I am currently in my last year at Griffith about to complete a Bachelor of Ed -primary and considering all of my options for work once finished.

I live in Brisbane and would like to stay here so my chances of getting full time work teaching are very very slim.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other options i can go with. I would like to start full time work as soon as i finish as being a student for 4 years im so over being broke.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Emma

I'm 7 weeks away from completing my primary/middle in SA (basically teaching yrs 3-10). Options...hrmm. Well hopefully you've had some good practicums which have given you a list of contacts you can use to get some TRT work and then move into some contract work (the normal path for those looking at metro jobs).

Teaching like other professions is all about having contacts within the community. I dont know about your degree but I'm about to go on my final fourth prac for 5 weeks. From there I'll probably get some TRT work at that school and TRT work from my 3rd prac school. You can forget about permanency in a metro school (country is much more different). Go around to some schools which you might like to teach at (don't go to 3 schools...go to 7-10) and let them know your available for TRT. Make a good impression then look out for contract positions when they open up.

GL...:)

You might just have to pack it up and move somewhere else if there's no jobs in Brisbane.

You could get into kinda counselling, a friend has done the same as you, and she is working in some kinda support centre, where they try to help teenagers from broken homes etc to realise their "full potential".

Go bulk remote. Do two years of s***, get all the points/credit whatever you need for a local job. You'll hate it though.

Unless you have some special skill for a local job i doubt you'll get one. Even if you did you'd get paid less and take longer to move up the pay scale.

Doing secondary education myself. I would highly recommend doing teacher aide work to get you started - work in a school for a bit to gain experience in a school environment, and if you work well at that you'll have a really great shot at applying for a teaching position with them. Even just 6 months of teacher aide work would look really good. I'd suggest trying for ESL teacher aide work because you'll have a lot more involvement with the students. I recently did prac at Coorparoo Secondary College where the teacher aides for the ESL staffroom came in to assist the ESL teachers and helped the students with their reading etc.

What my Sister did.

You can get around it like Haklin has outlined. Just do the time. Unless you have sick family/Kinds you need to take of here it's pretty selfish to make everyone else do country service and expecting to never do it yourself.

You dont even have to go Bulk Remote, places like Beaudesert are considered "Remote" and it's only 7km outside of Logan. You wont get say, Doomagee Points (7 I think a year?) but in a few years you can pretty much pick any District and get in.

Going country service really isn't as bad as people imagine it to be. You do get some choice in where you go - can nominate preferences etc, and as Scooter said, "country" isn't necessarily in the middle of nowhere.

What rating did you get / do you think you're going to get? If you get an S1 (if they still call it that) you can often get jobs in the logan district and other outer suburban areas.

Otherwise, do country service :D

Eagleby South anyone? I've heard thats like 3-4 points a year... I've also heard they have a padded cell! :D

You could always stay broke a little longer and polish off a maths degree with a little bit of 2ndry teaching and get an easy job teaching maths.

if you are skilled in maths or science you can go pretty much anywhere you want but obviously the private sector should be the goal.

EQ is a hole. I worked there.

By private sector do you mean "private sector" or "private school system" ?

Yer Private school 2ndry Maths/Science teachers are in huge demand. Graduate teachers who land a spot in a private school can easily earn >$50k.

Sif teach in a public school, the pay is crap.

I graduate my middle years education degree after my final 7 week prac (starting next week). The plan for me is to wait to see any offers i get.. if none.. start relief teaching.

i'm considered getting teaching qualifications after i get my degree... i think teaching yr 11/12 biology or chemistry would be ok, especially at a private school. most of the kids doing those subjects would actually want to learn (or want to get good grades, anyway) so you wouldn't have to deal with too kids messing round and disrupting your class and s***

That's nice in theory, but you can't specify what grades you teach. You might find you get stuck with grade 8 science, even though your major might be chemistry. A lot of my math teachers at school didn't even study math at uni, that's just where they got placed.

I considered doing a post-grad teachers course. It is only worth doing if you work in a Private school, public pay isn't worth it.

public school teachers start on about 45-47k, reach max earnings after approx 10 years - $69k. Course you can earn more if you become a HOD or deputy etc.

i think starting pay is more like 48k in public schools, and the ceiling is reached after 9 years.

private schools expect a lot more extracurricula activities from their teachers though. and more 'commitment' to the school. i'd rather plod along in a public school than sacrifice mountains of weekends/afternoons for an extra 3k$ a year

Yea, that's only an approx from talking to a mate who teaches at my old high school. Other than teaching at say a Catholic school like my mum does, I would much prefer to teach at a public school. Otherwise be prepared to coach softball on Saturdays or take detention on Sundays etc.
