You've probably seen the ads - Mother, the energy drink that tasted so bad (apparently), they're making fun of it in the new promotions and showing videos of the people responsible for the first version being hilariously beaten and injured, presumably seriously.

The PR team launching the new event offered us a test taste, and - despite our warnings of being completely honest about the new flavour, even if it sucks - sent some out last week. The guys in the office here - game players, programmers and hardcore nerds of various other persuasions - have been getting into it and consented to have their thoughts on it splashed all over the Internets. So if you're interested, have a read.

Old one: It tasted like s***, I bought a can and had 1/2 a mouthfull and then left it.
New one: Still taste like s***. Though not quite as bad.

And they say 'double the energy' *compared to a 250ml can. It's a 500ml can, 500ml is 2x 250ml? Who'd of thunk it.

I'll stick to my V.

Yeh, I'm not a fan [edit: of energy drinks in general] and also don't want my heart to explode, so I opted out of this particular test.

I found it tastes like if you poured V & red bull into a glass & mixed it.

I like the newer Lemon version of V, but I still think you can't go past the thai red bull they sell in Asian stores here

Old Mother - Bought it once, never again

New Mother - Gave it a try yesterday.. tastes like a less fizzy redbull.. is good.

Yellow V - Smashed a heap of these at splendour.. 4x the amount of gurana (lemon must be the only flavour that can mask the taste). They taste like caylippo's (the lemon cylinder iceblocks).

Winner - red bull / new mother

caffeine is evil, ridiculous how many people can't start a day without coffee, it's like a drug dependancy. Alot of long term health problems like increased chance of osteoperosis are the result of caffeine

I only really drink energy drinks before an 8AM lecture

Some guys I work with seem to drink energy drinks daily. Can't imagine how it's affected thier health.

I'll never understand the energy drink culture. Are they ment to be something you drink occasionally for a small boost in energy levels or something you consume regulary for the effects?

This stuff f***ing rocks. The tafe I'm at currently was sold out this morning. Lucky I bought two!

Those energy drinks have the best effect when you don't drink much caffeinated products for at least 2 weeks, then chug one of those energy drinks down and your literally buzzing!

I already had one previously so didn't participate but I actually liked the original mother taste better. It reminded me of the old Schweppes cola and the new one tastes like a try hard V substitute.

I didnt mind the first mother. Was always dirt cheap too.

If you want a decent stimulant go to a sports shop supp and you'll get something 10x the buzz and no sugar.

I think this new mother is far closer to resembling red bull than it does V.

The real question is does it mix well with Tequila? V and Tequila is win.

i only drink the s*** when needed like night time lectures/class' after a full day of work

I didn't think the original was that bad. I never bought it again, but I didn't think it was much worse than any other energy drink out there.

No - I'd like to think the difference between advertising and editorials is pretty clear, especially when I go out of my way to explain that I told them before they sent it that we'd be honest so they might want to rethink sending it our way.

The only time we'll put something on the site that we got paid for is in an actual advertising spot, so its easy for everyone to tell the difference. Oh yeh, and it won't have my name on it; there's noone that could pay me enough to say nice things about s***ty products.

yeah. got some just because i figured i could use those little bottles for something else. not impressed. taste was meh, and it's supposed energy boost per drink wasn't much more than anything else on the market.... having said that it's a smaller drink but.

edit: oh and don't believe the picture. it's some sickly green colour and the folks at thinkgeek say that's normal and sent me another 6 pack of green.

I kinda like the idea of PR companys seeking slightly more 'honest and real' reviews (or even reviews where they bag the s*** out of it on somethingawful) instead of finding some punk skate boarder and paying them a s***load of money to call their product 'ultra rad' or something similarly dire.

That being said I bags testing any review products from Sumo Lounge :P

i remeber my uni giving out some coffee energy drink. it tasted so nice that we walked past the stand and grabbed a whole carton of them. ended up being about 10 cans each.

ok i just tried it, and it's basically identical to red bull just in a bigger can. no big deal.

I thought the old mother was OK, but then I don't really like other energy drinks. The only energy drinks I've really liked are the Sprite one and the sugar-free Monster. Rockstar is also passable. I usually stick to Pepsi Max for my caffeine buzz.

The old Mother tasted like complete ass but the new one is f***ing nice.

I'm not in the target demographic and have no experience drinking energy drinks; my opinion would be a complete waste of time. This is the same reason you don't see me reviewing MMOs; noone wants to read a thousand word diatribe about what a waste of time they are and how much better it would be if everyone just played Quake 3 CTF.

Tried the New 'Mother' Energy Drink recently. Sipped it. Poured the rest of the drink on the garden.

Hated the old Mother drink. Thought it tasted terrible so it wasn't worth the price.

The new one tastes a lot like red bull, or red eye to me except I like it a bit more. For 500ml @ $2.50 though, it is the clear winner! I don't know how long that price will last though.

I don't drink coffee and only have an energy drink every few weeks... so a 160mg hit of caff + all that sugar/taurine and s*** gets me wired.

I love the taste of Redbull / V, tastes very similar.

Has anyone tried "samedi"? It's got some french/spanish writing all over it but its made in aus. A silver bottle with a guy with a top hat on the front. Tastes pretty awesome imo.

I tried the new Mother and it tasted good but after about half I started to feel sick. Like, the taste was quite good, but I got this weird sickly feeling halfway through and had to stop drinking it.

But 500ml is a lot of energy drink in one sitting. I tried the new mother a while ago and it didn't taste too bad but 500ml? It's alot and I felt like crap after.

Yeah, coffee and energy drinks are pretty much a work only venture for me (but also band rehearsal, makes me wanna ROCK :P) but I find I can down a V with ease, but any other energy drinks are just .. not so good.

So I tried Samedi today and it's ok a little bit too sweet for me, I prefer a tangier taste of the new Mother.

Red Eye Platnium rocks, isn't totally full of taurine, and gets me alert and awake, without the jitter!

I don't know if I'm sensitive to caffeine or something but if i have a mother at about 2/3pm i end up in bed at midnight rolling around for a good couple of hours.

Used to drink one like everyday.. but now I'm on a mother free diet.. they end up making you feel s***.

I read somewhere that having an energy drink releases the same chemicals in your brain as when your stressed.

Coffee has around 100mg of caffeine, tea can have more if you leave the bag in for long enough.

I'd much prefer to drink coffee instead of those energy drinks!
