I couldn't find any countdown or any other reference to this at the LHC homepage. Are you sure its at midnight Aus EST?

thats when it will be unveiled.. but they are turning it on now.. first particles go in sometime this month..

The initial particle beams are due for injection this month and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008.

yeah but I'm not confident that even the unveiling has been properly thought through in terms of the safety of the rest of us who occupy this planet

I know I definitely feel like the whole project was just thrown together really haphazardly with barely any planning or thoughts to anyone's safety.

From wikipedia summarising the press release two posts up:
The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). The initial particle beams are due for injection in August 2008,[2] the first attempt to circulate beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for September 10, 2008,[3] and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008.[4]

So yeah you guys are idiots. It's a gradual process of getting the thing up and running at increasing energy .. it's not like "BAM we've turned it on, start running bitches!".

At what stage of this process is it the energy high enough to actually be something to worry about? Oh that's right, none of us know because we aren't f***ing particle physicists. End of story.

Also the lhcountdown.com guys should just give up. They have no idea with their 'count-down'.

They started putting the project together in the 80's. How is over 20 years of planning and analysis "haphazard"?

Maybe 20 years is enough for you, but its not enough for me, and any forward thinking society. It took the Earth 6000 years to get where it is today and I don't want it blown away by a measly 20 years of research by these so-called scientists.

Extract from this article ..........

http://thefutureofthings.com/news/1301/large-hadron-collider-switches-on.html

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CERN was turned on Today, Wednesday September 11th. The event put to rest the rumors regarding the supposed dangers it poses, and hopefully reveal some well kept secrets of particle physics. The first beams circulated through the 27 kilometers collider, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008.

" the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so we have to wait till then :)

Due to my ignorance and lack of scientific knowledge, I just can't begin to comprehend how the earth came about and therefore I believe it's gonna be one of those unsolved mysteries. One question that supports how I feel about this is always "and what was before that".. Nothing to do with religion, odd I know.. I just simply don't believe they will discover how we exist.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move

Well I hope people still think it was a bad idea cause we're about to blow it up.

yeh and this position came through quite clearly in your earlier post - thus my response. I wasn't suggesting actual biblical basis for your comment, I was just likening it's ignorance to religious dogma

It's simple really, the Universe was created by god using the Hardron collider. What else do you need for proof. I bet he built it in 6 days not 10 years too.
