So I'd just walked out of the office and a police car drove by, and both the cops were looking at me. I just walked on and then heard a car horn through my headphones (listening to Muse) and just kept walking.. then they turned the sirens on so I looked around and they called me over.

They asked for my ID and I asked why, and they're like "oh don't worry, you're not in trouble" (...obviously, because I've done nothing wrong, so duh). I had a chat to them and turns out they're collecting details from people in the area - I assume starting with all the people that look like felons, like I do when I walk to/from work:

http://trog.qgl.org/up/trog-profiled.jpg

I talked to them a bit more, basically their explanation was that there's been a lot of break-ins/stolen cars in the area (we're right between two train stations and apparently train stations are like criminal magnets), and I guess I look like one.

I pointed out the fact that I work right there and I'm not a habitual carjacker and had a bit of a chat; ended up giving them my license and phone number which they noted down (then I asked them for their cards, of which they had none, but they wrote down their details for me). I didn't actually need to but both the guys were fairly cool about the whole thing and I figure their job is hard enough dealing with people that are actually asshats.

So anyway, beware - if you are going to commit a crime, don't do it looking like an actual felon and your chances are much better.

People make snap judgements when they spot someone on the street. You need to have an obvious thing about you that people can judge you by, like a dog, or newspaper - and then suddenly instead of "shady guy on footpath" you become "man with dog" or "man with newspaper" - once they see this, they'll feel like they understand your purpose and judge you differently.

I have to say, living in the area and having had my apartment broken into (and knowing that a lot of the guys I work with drive cars and park them around the place), I am all for the po-lice being active around here.

I actually saw a plainclothes detective pull up some group of kids a couple weeks ago and do almost the same thing - this was like 9am in the morning during school holidays while they were just hanging around in the park (seriously who hangs around in a park at 9am?!?).

What's the deal with train stations being criminal magnets, is it because criminals enjoy using public transport? If I was to commit a crime I'd be 10 times more nervous having to rely on Queensland Rail for my bloody get-away.

had this happen to me about 2 years ago, was waiting for a mate and the train at the same time so i was kinda looking suss by walking up and down the ramp (sounds dumb now i think about it)

id, info written down, goes in a big database they do this all over the place. links together who you're with, what time, where etc in just a massive db, i forget what it's called.

then they just picked some random black school kid and asked for his id when he was just walking down to the train like a normal person

Heh, I get this all the time.
First time I went through the airport just the other day that I didn't get pegged for a "random" drug/explosives test. I actually waited for em to come an ask me an they were looking at me like "is there something else?" I just replied "well, normally I get sniffed, this would be the first time that I haven't"

Distracted them just long enough to let a ninja riding a dragon bypass the metal detectors.

people steal stuff just before the train arrives, then hop on the train, and hop off pretty much at the next stop, just to get away from the place as quick as possible.

got told years ago that's how it normally happens, and even saw it in action one night. Was on the beenleigh train going home one night and when it stopped at fairfield a couple of teenagers ran onto the train carrying a pillow case with stuff in it and a vcr. I thought "lol, suss much?" and they were all out of breath and looking back down the train going "did he get on? did he? yes he did" and they started walking towards the other end of the train. next second 2 cops walk in from the other carriage and escorted them off the train at yerongpilly. last i saw they both had their books out taking down details.

I think it's good the police are being proactive, especially because they're willing to have a chat to the people they pull up and not just quiz them. They're not just sitting back and they're getting out in the community. They were right to pull up Trog though, he's one shady mofo

that's pretty f***ing worrying. i would politely decline and be on my way.. i think randomly asking for people's ID's and entering it into some kind of massive big brother database where they track who hangs out with who is taking crime-fighting a bit far.

You first mistake was wearing a beanie. I have no idea what they have against people with beanies. Once was in Ashgrove....apparently some teacher got attacked. I was wearing a beanie, walking down the road a long way from the incident but they pulled over and long story short I was in the back of their car while my bus went by...explanation...I looked dodgy in a beanie and shouldn't dress like that at night (middle of winter...). They gave me a lift home at least.

In some instances it's an offence to decline to show ID. See s 40 of the PPRA.

it's amazing how much the cops know....I mean considering a lot of them don't exactly look like rocket surgeons. When I was 18 we were in the mall drunk one morning after leaving the casino and started talking to some school girls (they were friends from the year below us). Within about 2 minutes the cops came up and addressed me and my mates by our first names and brought up some minor indescretions* we had had with the popo in the past and politely asked us to move along.

*as in very minor indescrtions - being drunk in puplic once or twice...no actual tickets or charges...just had details taken down.

I think you're perfectly within your rights to refuse to provide any information. A quick google finds this page:
The police have no general power to randomly stop and search people, or their homes. However, legislation exists that permits the police to search persons, places and vehicles when investigating crime. Such searches may occur either with or without a search warrant.

In certain circumstances the police can lawfully conduct searches on the spot without a warrant. Substantial penalties apply to persons who resist or obstruct a legitimate and lawful police search.
So I guess if they ask you for info or something if your first question is "are you actively investigating a crime?" and they say no, you can safely deny them any access to your person.

I actually recall reading a page on some gig site (like Big Day Out or something) which had the rules in more detail (mostly so drugf***ed a******s at festivals could do their best to avoid getting caught) but I can't recall exactly where it was. It detailed all your rights etc.

They are they law. If they need a reason it isnt hard to make one up. Reasonable suspision. One day when I was driving home from work, about 2-3 months ago. A cop drove past me, then he pulled over (i looked in the rearview) and swung around, followed me for about 2kms then pulled me over, asked me some question (whos car? name and address? you ever been done for drink driving? etc), checked my licence for a few minutes, then handed it back, said nothing and got back in the car... didnt even say thanks and bye. The only reason I can think of was I had a 6 pack on the passeneger seat, but still, how often would you see that? Probably another un-interesting story! At the time I didnt give a f*** because I was on my way home from the last day of my old work, yeeww!

Actually if you read what I wrote above, they can't just "make up a reason". They have pretty strict rules they have to follow, because otherwise they get the s*** sued out of them. I am not sure what the rules are around cars though; obviously they can pull you over randomly under certain circumstances for RBTs etc; I'm sure there's a variety of other reasons for doing it, but I'm sure their powers are limited - like, I suspect they can't just search your car unless you have a kilo of cocaine on the front seat or something.

"we have reason to believe that u have illegal substances on ur possesion, we will now begin a search, if u refuse this search we will arrest u and take u down to the station for refusing to co-operate with police officers."

thats the kind of bulls*** u hear all the time... they just make s*** up and say they can whatever they want or u will get arrested/charged for bulls***.

I suspect they can't just search your car unless you have a kilo of cocaine on the front seat or something

they can search ur car becauce u r "suspected" to have illegal substance, whether or not they have any reason to or not... its all those new drug laws!

I realise there are rather strict rules and im not saying they just feel like pulling you over so they make something up. However if your someone they dont like and they want to search you, they could for example say they thought they say you doing gaffiti earlier, can we check your bag? Unless for some reason you have lots of people who viewed you walking home it will stick.... Im sure this doesnt happens often, im also sure it can and does from time to time....

Whats the colour of a two cent piece?

From the same page I linked above:
Search of Persons without a Search Warrant

If a police officer reasonably suspects that a person is in possession of:

* a dangerous drug;
* evidence of a drug offence;
* a chemical used, or a piece of property contaminated by a chemical used, in the manufacture of a dangerous drug; and/or
* any property or funds associated with a drug offence

The officer may stop and search the person, together with anything in possession of the person. If it is not practicable for the officer to conduct a search of the person where stopped, the officer may take the person, together with anything in possession of the person, to another place to be searched.

Any evidence of a drug offence, and/or thing liable to forfeiture, may be seized.
Doesn't actually say what happens if you attempt to refuse so I don't know if I can believe your claim that you'll get arrested if you fail to comply, but I guess its certainly possible.

Here's another really good link: legalaid.qld.gov.au's FAQ on Do I have to talk to the police?

The police can generally ask you to provide your name and address especially where they reasonably suspect that you have broken the law.

its nice how open and grey the law is. "reasonable" is a pretty loose word which they can use to their advantage quite alot.

"U just drove out of the valley, which is a high drug trafficking area, so its reasonable to assume that u r a drug runner and im goin to harrass u and search u for 20minutes, until i find nothing and send u on ur way, without a thank you or an apology for wasting ur time"

I dunno, fortunately a lot of decent police work can be done by profiling douchebags because drugf***ed valley bunnies all tend to the look the same, right? It's not like they've decided to randomly go after raver types because they don't like their glow-sticks, its because they've realised if there's two people coming out at some weird hour, and one person is wearing a business suit and carrying a briefcase and looking soul-destroyed after working 16 hours and the other person looks hopped up on something, the latter one is more likely to yield results if they hold them by the ankles and shake, right?
