Hey guys! We use MSN at work but its through a Proxy. My MSN is not set up to save chat logs. How ever my question is, can a Server Admin still save chat logs or msn activities? Not that I have anything to hide but am curious to know for future usage. I hope ive explianed myself well.

Cheers!

Ok, How can they view these? is it a third party software that is recording it? im fairly curious on how it works.

there was this software that I found that would find msn packets on the network and show you conversations.

Only worked on a hub, becuase that sends all the packets everywhere, so i'd assume it would work on the proxy server becuase all the msn packets are going through it.

No not worried. More interested really. I want to learn more about networking and network security and knew this would be a good place to ask.

Look for some IM software that offers end-to-end encryption. There's some plugins for MSN that do it, but they're all closed-source so I'd be more inclined to try something like Miranda or Pidgin; both of them have encryption modules available.

Of course, if it's not your computer there's still concerns about what your sysadmin can do with it - at least if its encrypted over the wire he can't snoop the traffic directly.

heh I was asked to do this when I was a sysadmin down the coast
major moral objection but considering they were paying my wages I did it

was awesome fun for a while, I got to read the conversations of everyone in the office and I was "to report anything potentially harmful to administration"

I had a bit of a thing for a chick in the office at the time and found out she wanted to jump my bones, thats my story.

What the hell?! what's the end of that story? Did you use your admin superpowers to hit that or what?!

Default MSN traffic is clear text easily sniffed.

But then at work they could watch your screen with out you knowing from anywhere in the world. We have 2 remote management tools installed on every workstation that would let us do that here, mainly so we can help people over the phone.

Simple rule. Don't do anything at work you wouldn't do if your boss was watching over your shoulder ... cos they could very well be doing so.

I'd extend this:

"Don't do anything on the Internet you wouldn't want your boss or your mother to find out about."

I'd modify that to "Don't do anything with trog's mum that you wouldn't want him to find out about"

yeh

I also live in a cat s*** and piss infested hole and judge all my friends by how much they drink

BOHEMION: even basic linux firewalls like smoothwall express (http://www.smoothwall.org/) have msn logging as a standard feature, as I found out after installing it.

back when i was doing internal IT for a company i worked at, the management asked for msn chat monitoring to be put on to see get an idea of what was going on. Flipping through various live chat logs i came accross one of the girls in HR having cyber sex with her boyfriend... at 11AM in the office!?! Some things you just don't want to know.

haha yeah but lets be honest here for a second, princess. it wasn't the lies that upset you it was the harsh truths that got slipped in there. and besides you can't exactly claim the high ground for people telling lies when you've read them by logging their internet traffic.

unless of course you were reading those logs for a valid reason, like i don't know, helping prevent a terrorist attack? preventing weapons schematics getting into the hands of communists? surely it wasn't just because you were being a c***?

I use a program called SimpLite to encrypt MSN conversations with like-minded people who just don't want to worry about what they talk about or paste (bank account details, etc). The main catch is that the person on the other end must have the software installed too .. not a big problem for me as I don't really talk about anything important to those people who can't be bothered :)

Supports the typical clients: official MSN, Trillian, Pidgin, Miranda, aMSN.

I noticed the latest Miranda IM now supports SSL encryption (without needing OpenSSL!) Any idea how far a long it'll stay encrypted, if at all if the other person isn't using something similar?

I'd say what I do but too many people at work read this forum. Best defense is be a good employee, if they want to get rid of you, they will find a reason no matter if you have msn encrypted or not.
