Topic: Wired call Nokia E71 "iPhone Killer'

I'm sure those two words are gonna get kicked around quite a bit for, say, the REST OF OUR LIVES, but the Wired review of the Nokia E71 seems to indicate it is a pretty decent phone. The review is a bit light on details, at least for my tastes, and the phone overall looks a bit businessy as opposed to the sleek cool lines the iPhone has, but the specs look fairly decent.

Anyone seen one of these?

An iphone killer would have a touchscreen and also not have a smaller lower res screen and also no huge qwerty keyboard... Also it would have a better OS than Symbian...

Not to say this phone isn't good but it's not even in the same target audience to the iPhone. The iPhone's a media based smartphone with an emphasis on well designed touch interface, lack of buttons and large hi res screen.

unless a video comes out of some woman paying $500 to jump a queue to buy the store out only to find out its only 1 per customer it'll have never killed the iphone in my eyes.

(thats all the iphone was ever good for)

from anyone who has progressed from a WM5 device to a blackberry knows that touchscreens are were a fad and have no value other than amusement.

The only reason touchscreens are s*** is because Apple patented their touchscreen technology. The iPhone touchscreen s***s on things like LG viewtys and the like with the soft pushy touch screens they use.

I tried the viewty after using an ipod touch for a year and it was s***. Unresponsive and u had to press a bit on the screen.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the touchscreen either, give me real buttons to press any day.

Wouldn't take much.

Since the iPhone was released, I've only seen one out in the wild. After all the hype, one, despite using public transport and walking around the city and Hawthorn, right around an area where there's a uni.

Yeah probably, but use an iPhone touchscreen then use something like the viewty and you'll be surprised how much better apples touchscreen is....

Yeah E71 looks good. I want one, I really don't like touchscreen even with haptic feedback it still ain't like the real thing. Maybe I'm just too old and jaded....

I'm a fan of the E71. It's a nice tidy little unit, although the screen looks a tad small + seems to have a slightly odd resolution. Otherwise no real complaints at all about it.

Still more keen on a jesus phone, but unless 3 come out and announce they'll be launching it at some point in the next 6 months, then I may look at the e71 as an alternative (or the BB Bold, but only if I can swing free Blackberry service. heh)

more like when they tried to contact 3 they kept getting "the person you are trying to call out of service or has their phone turned off"

I won an E65 at my work xmas party last year, hopefully I win an E71 - it looks awesome. I could see myself getting on of those.

How does the E71 interface with the PC? Last time I connected my Nokia to the computer I had to use Nokia's software which was a nightmare to use.

The PC suite isn't too bad these days, its certainly picked up a lot since its early releases.

Yes, because Apple is the only company who could ever possibly make something better than the iPhone.

It's more about marketing and branding something better than the iPhone.

Thanks Telstra.... my iPhone's Cellular Network Data usage meter (i.e. minus wifi) is 600k up and 4.3 mb down. So why does Telstra count 8mb when a 3rd of the iPhones usage count is actually in the FREE bigpond iPhone portal and its half as much anhway????

once apple feels they can trick their existing customers into buying yet another iPhone, but not before they drop the price on the existing one just to see how far they can go with f***ing people around.

haha scuzzy, TRUE DAT.

Yeh, I don't really like the touch screen interface either. I really need the tactile feedback of buttons, especially in a small device. That said, the ipod touch/iphone interface is pretty f***ing impressive stuff.

One thing that bugs the crap out of me with the ipod touch is that it has NO other physical buttons other than the main one and the power one. I'd really like, say, volume control on the side or something. Does the iphone have any more buttons?

Yes, volume buttons on the side of the phone and a silent switch.

Joel on Software has done a review of his new E71 which is pretty comprehenisve and throws in some iPhone comparisons.

I was expecting to see a lot of iPhones here in Europe but most people that I'm meeting are using Blackberrys. I met this dude from Xbox Live Arcade and we were talking about phones - he has an iPhone and was talking about how almost utterly useless it is for business application type stuff and he's going back to a Windows mobile device as soon as he can.

What type of business apps was he banging on about?

Edit: reading the review he mentions he has to install a bunch of apps to get it working (Exchange sync, Browser, etc). How come Nokia can't get this basic s*** on a brand new phone when other phones have been doing it for yonkies.

Mostly email, his main frustrations (which I sort of share but cuz I'm not really trying to use it as a biz device I can't really empathise that much with) were a) keyboard b) lack of search in the mail client - which if you have jillions of emails makes finding things almost impossible

My Nokia came with those programs, maybe he just prefers not to use the default ones?

He says they have it but it doesn't work as well as the installable alternatives
