Sorry to bump, but I just found out about this show. It's a strange idea, but anything that's made by Whedon and being written by the writers of Firefly is more than deserving of a chance.
One thing that seemed odd though is that it's being produced by Fox. Didn't Whedon say that he never wanted to work with them again after they screwed over Firefly? |

No, I believe that was a legion of fanboys.
Any writer/producer/director would not bite a potential hand that feeds them in the future, no matter how disgruntled they are. :) |

It won't start till September - that's when the Fall lineups begin.
Though I would say you'll most likely find an advance copy on the internets beforehand. |

Format of the show is very alias, but less cheesy. Disappointed that there's none of that Whedon humour element though, show seems to take itself a little too seriously.
Wasn't a great first ep but maybe it just needs to warm up. |

Well, I wasn't really sure what to expect, so I came away looking forward to where they're going to take it. There were a few silly things in it, but I'll be watching the next episode for sure. I'll give Whedon benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, I'm interested to see where its going, its good enough that I want to see more, but like Dan said, I think it takes itself a bit too seriously. It definitely felt lacking in whedonesque witty banter :(

Seems to have promise..
One aspect I don't quite understand - Echo's memory is wiped and she's implanted with memories, personality, skills etc. Ok got that. Yet at the end of her engagements (or during) she returns to her Handlers and talks to them about the mission ie. she *knows* she's an Active (she even mentions getting the "treatment") So what's going on here? Is it some kind of dual personality where she becomes the person yet is still "in on it"? But if she knows she's just play-acting the role, wouldn't that defeat the point a tad? |

I'd say she's programmed to think that her Handlers are just her co-workers and her treatment is necessary. Besides that, the show is about Echo becoming self-aware.

Yeah, I don't think she knows shes an active, I just assumed she was somehow programmed to think she needed this 'treatment', like she thought it was some medical thing it was necessary for her to have. Because she was always talking about doing things after her treatment, so she obviously wasn't aware of what it really was.

Yeah I thought it was a decent start until I read the comments here and was reminded it was a Whedon show. Then I compared it to Firefly and now I'm really disappointed.
Still, it beats a lot of shows out there and who knows, maybe we will see more Whedonesk banter as the show unfolds. |

I remember I wasn't exactly blown away the first time I saw Firefly (Train Job ep), it took a few eps to warm up to..yeah, that's cos fox sucked and wanted something action-y to premiere with. whedon actually scripted the train job as e03, after you find out who these people are and why they're doing what they do. will have to have a look at dollhouse, been waiting a while. |

Have to say this is prolly the best show I've seen in ages.
LOL, just kidding. It's quite boring I think but maybe it will get better. Also, Eliza is a horrible choice for the lead role. She sucks when it comes to action thriller type stuff. Just watch The Alphabet Killer to see why. Someone like Sophia Bush would have been heaps better. Anyway, hopefully it will get better and turn in to an awesome show. |

Those thinking "oh it's just the first episode" (ie. Pilot) - take note. You just watched what was originally was going to be about episode 4.
Whedon scrapped the pilot, since he figured it didn't match what the FOX folks were pitching/angling the show at. So in essence, the show has already had a refit prior to launch. (Still doesn't beat the Knight Rider reboot-in-a-reboot) |

I agree with kat, I don't really think eliza is that great an actress. I also heard that the 6th ep is the first weadon-written one, and to wait until that at least. I've found it entertaining so far, but nothing great. The second ep was better than the first. |

I'm not sure there is going to be much typical joss whedon humour in this one, it seems a lot darker and more serious than his other offerings, it doesn't really present too many opportunities for witty banter.

That being said, I agree, second episode was heaps better with the establishment of the crazy psychotic active who carved everyone up and has some connection to Echo. The cop who's investigating the dollhouse though, his story is still completely s*** and doesn't interest me at all, hope something picks up there soon.

Yeah, I've seen the third, and tbh, will probably watch until at least the sixth. 3rd ep wasn't that much better, although there is a little more back ground and character relationships coming through. I'll tell you if it gets any better. |

Yeah, its improving, episode 3 was annoying but the latest one was pretty cool. Pretty much, the episodes that have something to do with alpha (ie, 2 and 4) have been the best so far, so just give us more alpha related stories imo.

Ok, so I just watched the 4th ep - it is far better than the 3rd! Definintely agree that the Alpha storyline seems to be a good one. And I can also kinda see more of a weadon influence in this one. Darker, and funnier too. Worth watching. |

Sorry, didn't hear you the first time mongie. 1st wasn't that good, but smeh. I'm looking forward to the next one though, looks like Tim Minear wrote it - always enjoyed his stuff. Apparently Jed (Weadon) had a hand in writing the 3rd ep :| Him and the other writer seem to only have had major writing experience in Dr Horrible's sing-a-long. Explains a bit. |

The show seems to be slowly improving, but it's still not amazing. The whole Alpha story seems like it could be cool, and the last episode was certainly better than the one before. And it had Bra'tac!

Yeah, I posted the above comment before I watched episode 6. Just watched episode 6 and it was pretty good, I did enjoy that one. For the first time since the series started, I'm actually enjoying that FBI guy's storyline now, he was just a waste of time previously. If only Joss Whedon was writing every episode, maybe it'd be up to that level of quality all the time, but unfortunately you just know its going to drop back down into more s*** like that one where she was a singer. Its really more of an Eliza Dushku show, than a Joss Whedon show.

Ep 6 was definitely the best so far.
As for the recent ep - wtf were they thinking. What was with that Dominatrix outfit?!?!?!?! Made me throw up a little in my mouth |

Its become a bit more interesting, but its still pretty lacking, if it wasn't a Joss Whedon show I doubt I'd still be watching it.

Tis getting very interesting, yes.
It's a frustrating show though, because it's not clear who we're meant to be rooting for. Okay, so Echo seems to be the protagonist..but what does that make everyone else? Is the Dollhouse organisation the Big Bad? What about its employees? If they're the bad guys, are we meant to be rooting for Ballard to expose them? So many shades of grey..arrgh! Still intrigued to see it play out though, the season finale should be epic. |

Tis getting very interesting, yes. Agreed, but Ballard is kind of a useless pussy so far, so it's hard to root for him.. |

Heh, yeah, I was having this conversation with my housemate last night. They kind of make pretty much all of the characters likable (except for Dominic, which, after seeing the last episode, is done for a good reason), so who the hell are we supposed to side with? Helo's character (I forget his name in the show) is trying to bring down the Dollhouse, so are we supposed to like or dislike him? |

The thing is, they made Dominic unlikeable, and made him out to be the villain, but he was actually closer to being the "good" guy, he worked for the government, he worked for the NSA, trying to infiltrate and bring down the dollhouse. All the people who would typically be considered the "bad" guys are the ones they're making so likeable and the people who would traditionally be the "good" guys are seen as a threat and made to look like the villains of the piece. Ballard on the other hand is just made to look like an inept crackpot.

I think the real villains will reveal themselves to be the Fox TV execs when they can the show, but that said most people won't really give a s***.

I dunno if I would call Dominic an actual good guy. From what I recollect, the NSA didn't have a problem with what the Dollhouse was doing. They just think it should be a government operation rather than a privately run one.
They didn't want it being exposed to the public as that might ruin their own plans for such things. I'm waiting for the twist where you find out that a number of the staff in the Dollhouse are themselves dolls. The doctor seems like a good candidate. She could almost be mistaken for one at times as is. |

I thought of watching this show since the start of this thread. I started watching Leverage but that's gunna have to wait as this looks twice as good. I just seen the 1st ep and would like to watch another but I'm out of sleeping pills(alcohol), so it's gunna have to wait.
Mmmm... and Dusku(spelling?) I woulda spanked her since "spirit fingers." |

Not sure about renewal, but the last ep cancelled thing is wrong. It's something to do with fox counting the original unaired pilot as part of the 13 eps they asked for, but the studio making 13 eps not including the unaired pilot, and the extra 13th ep will be part of the dvd set. Something like that. Click here for less vague details |

I don't think the whedon fans will cry that much, it's not much like his previous shows at all, definitely lacks alot of the character interactions in both dialogue, and relationships, that the others had. Doesn't really feel all that whedon to me.
It's not a horrible show, more enjoyable than watching another law and order, but nothing great either. |

Seriously whats with the way Ballard walks everywhere like hes running on the spot or pulling an ice sled behind him on the way to the south pole. Its no wonder nobody at the Bureau takes him seriously.

Wow, the last two episodes of the season were fantastic, I'm actually interested in the show now. They should have lead with those episodes, and forgotten all the wishy washy crap they wasted time on in the first five sixths of the season.

Doesn't really matter who they cast as Alpha, its more the fact that interesting stuff actually happened in the last 2 episodes. The Alpha storyline was really the only interesting thing in the entire season, so I dunno why they didn't just lead with it.

Sure the middle of the season wasn't exactly Cock Throbingly Awesome, unfortunately, pretty rare an action style show is.
Over all tho I found it a decent show. Not many shows that I bother watching. |
