I mentioned this in the Homebrew Channel thread, but I think it deserves its own thread as well.
I remember reading that a few people on here have the Datel Freeloader disc. This is basically a warning, as the latest Wii system update (version 3.3) patches the exploit that was used by Datel and the homebrew community which allowed them to execute their own unofficially signed code. It also makes it impossible to install the Twilight Princess hack, and deletes it if it is already present. Essentially, if you install the latest update, your Freeloader will no longer work, and neither will the Twilight hack. The Homebrew Channel however is unaffected. At the moment, you're fine to just not update, but eventually there will be games coming out that require this latest firmware update, and will install it automatically. If you want to preserve the functionality of your Freeloader, avoid updating for as long as possible, and keep an eye on www.wiibrew.org for updates. |

but eventually there will be games coming out that require this latest firmware update Which will just happen to coincide with when a workaround is released. |

It may not even take that long. Apparently the Twilight hack was the first bug they found in the first game they examined, so it may not take them long to find another.
As for the signing exploit, I suspect that could be more difficult to repair. |

A new Zelda TP Hack has been released that works on ver 3.3, checkout http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_Hack for the details.
Im not sure why they even bother trying to close these sort of holes, they found out how to beat it in about 8 hours apparently and released the new hack in 5 days. |

Yeah, I just installed it. Didn't need to though, since I haven't updated. At least I've got nothing to worry about now when I do update next.

This latest update blocks Trucha signed disks which with the help of a modchip allows you to play burnt games. |

That's not what the Trucha exploit was for. People with modchips can still play burnt games fine. The Trucha exploit was used for signing discs with unofficial code so that they could boot. It was mainly used for homebrew, though the same exploit was used by Datel on the Freeloader, so it doesn't work anymore either.

Really? then I'm also wondering why Nintendo is blocking these holes.
I'm guessing modchips then override the signing system all together? |

I'm guessing modchips then override the signing system all together? Over-ride? I don't think they even touch signatures since there's no new/modified content to sign for burnt games? last edited by parabol at 09:33:14 23/Jun/08 |

I believe most wii modchips are usually soldered directly to the optical drive, meaning they circumvent the copy protection directly. Trucha signing basically just lets you modify an existing disc iso and then sign it as being valid, so the disc will still boot.
Seems like the freeloader users are the only ones who will be impacted by this update, really. |
