Topic: PS3 To Incorporate Wii-like Motion Controls

Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that Sony are planning on releasing a "break-apart motion controller" for the PS3 that will use accelerometer technology to function in a similar fashion to Nintendo's Wii Remote. Though there is no official word on this at the moment, the article suggests certain developers already have functioning controllers and that an announcement would be coming soon.

Sony's current SIXAXIS controller has left many underwhelmed, including a host of big-name developers. With the success of the Wii and Sony's desire to become the home entertainment hub for all living rooms, it makes sense they'd rip off a good idea. We'll let you know as soon as something substantial comes along.

When I first played a PS3 when they first came out, I immediately noticed how much more responsive the PS3 sixaxis was compared to the Wii. I thought it was a really shame all you could do was tilt...

I thought Microsoft would have ripped off the wii controlers before Sony.

there was a mention of that (microsoft) here a while ago. something about microsoft not technically ripping off nintendo, just liscensing the same technology from the same company nintendo did.

Both the N64 (first console to have an analog stick) and the Wii have evolved the console controller. Nintendo is the only real innovator in consoles. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery they say. I wonder if the Big N will try to jump onto that new brainwave reading tech (eg www.emotiv.com).

nah a nintendo console doesn't need to know what its owner is thinking, fanboys only think what nintendo tells them anyway.

i believe it was called a control stick. lots of 70's games controllers had analog sticks. the original playstation had one before the n64. the n64 just had one that had more precise movements etc.

hopefully they will...

in the first few gens we'll all laugh at the stupids who try it and get cancer, but in the end Nintendo gamers will win out purely because they are indeed the hardcore nerds that 99% of PC gamers think they are

N64 was the first true analogue stick. there had been various versions prior, but none with true analogue increments of pressure that controlled the overall speed and response of your character (or vehicle or the like).

It's why that platform was among the first of the home consoles to be able to handle fully 3D FPS gaming.
