There's a particular USB device I usually recommend here because it's so awesome:

Alfa AWUS036H

Product link.
Datasheet

The receiver is much more sensitive than the average card, and it transmits at 200mW (@ the 54Mbps rate) which is also s***loads better than the average card. I was playing lag-free TF2 over wireless and transferring files at ~2.7MB/s with the access point on another level in the house. No disconnections .. brilliant!

RFShop sells it: link

Common misconception. The brand names (Netgear, Dlink) make -very bad- USB adapters. There is very little quality control in terms of hardware and the drivers. There are a s***load of PCI card adapters out there that are just as bad (Netgear WG311, one of the Dlink ones) .. but people generally whinge about USB because they don't understand the real cause of the problem.

Many of the lesser known brands (Alfa, etc) make superior adapters that work perfectly well, this is a well known fact among WiFi enthusiasts. My first experience was with a Netgear USB adapter. Was fine for a while but I kept getting drop-outs. The drivers sucked as well ... I was against USB adapters until I found out it's mainly the brand-name ones that are crap.

Don't go by brand. Go by a specific model (regardless of what brand it is), and you'll be right. Hence I was giving my advice/opinions.

I can't give any advice on that, never tried that model. You'll be gambling again. It might be good, maybe not.

I have a Netgear WG311, I've been using it for a couple of years now and it hasn't caused me any grief at all. I don't use the software it came with, nor the drivers. Perhaps that is why I have never had a problem with it.

Yea, i see what your saying, I'm not very good at explaining things sorry. I'm weary of my usb controller on my mb, i should have said also. As the netgear thing drops out and my external hdd plays up a bit also (trouble trying to safely remove at times, either -Cannot be removed at this time OR - the window Not Responding etc) This is only some of the time and usually requires a restart to pull the hdd out or get the internet to work again. Further when i go to restart or shut down it tends to stick on the shutting down screen without progressing (untill my nine iron collides with the reset switch, that usually fixes it...)

dude...

just fix your pc and stop blowing up hardware.

surely the techs @ UMart have cottoned onto the fact that you're blowing these up..

If you're unsure you can borrow mine for a week to see if it works fine (I have two sitting here), before slapping down the money to buy one. Message me if you're interested. Though if your hardware is killing off USB adapters, I might not want to do that :)

But the RFShop guys are great. Call up before you visit, say you're having wireless problems and wish to buy an adapter. Ask if you can replace it with another model if it doesn't work (in case your PC is really borked).

Mine does that, it's because windows is s*** and doesn't let go of a file sometimes so I just manually close the handle and it lets me disconnect it. The windows not responding, mine does that for a short while if the external drive is asleep, I just wait a few seconds until it turns back on and the window responds once again.
