So I just found out that my credit card was haxed and someone has rung up $2,500 worth of italian goods and services.

Mastercard reimburses it all of course.

Has anyone else had any tales of woe regarding hacked credit cards?

I had the exact same thing happen to my Mastercard - only a few hundred bucks (if that) were used. Interestingly, it was used in Italy. What bank are you with?

I went to go use mine one weekend to buy an ipod only to discover it was declined, and then only after ringing my credit card company did I find out they'd cancelled it for unauthorised activity, apparently someone tried to buy a song for a dollar something online on "yahoo wallet" whatever the f*** that is and obviously didn't have the right set of numbers on the back.

I had the AFP show up to my parents house because someone used a dodgy credit card to a buy CDROM & HDD from Bozzo Brown a few years ago and used their address.. that's my only interesting story.

Just wondering... If someone gets hold of your Visa Debit card number etc. can they use your card in exactly the same way?

I wonder what the protection is like then?

^Yeah - Debit is only as safe as your balance is low.

Some motherf***er keeps buying s*** at umart with mine, haven't tracked him down yet though :(

pretty sure its the same mongie

buying online with the debit or credit there doesnt seem to be any difference in the numbers

not sure if your debit can be overdrawn but, or if it will just decline

Except that a debit account is YOUR money.

Is there something stopping people from having $5K in their account?

Course not, but usually the providers who offer Debit accounts, like Suncorp for example, give you a few sub-accounts for free. I guess the safety is in transferring the cash to the Visa-debit linked account as you need it ?

So with a debit card, if someone steals it they steal your ACTUAL MONEY not just your credit. I dunno, that to me seems worse rather than better.

f*** yeah that seems very risky. I would never use a debit card for that exact purpose.

All credit card transactions are protected online. Does this protection extend to debit cards?

i only roll with a debit card with only operating cash on it, so thats all good:

was reading about the scam some guy did in australia and has now moved onto nz:

he calls ahead to a business and says his grandma wants to donate some cash/equipment:

rocks up with a eftpos machine and says "you have to do a nominal paperwork fee transfer of $2.50"

while hes doing that transfer, he skims the card at teh same time, takes the details of the card AND YOUR PIN and goes and prints up a copy and takes out all the cash he wants:

apparently the dude has made millions in aus .. . .
pretty clever!

To me the benefits of a debit card were to:

1. bypass the credit card application forms and/or income assessments. ANZ at the time wouldn't give me a CC since I earned less than $10k/year. Though recently they sent me a pre-approved credit card application (wtf?).

2. reduce the temptation to buy s*** before I could really afford it (when I want a piece of electronics/hardware, I must have it NOW! instead of rationally thinking about it over a space of a day or two).

Though #2 isn't much of an issue anymore as I have enough moneyz to buy most stuff I want, so that benefit of the debit card are gone.

pre-approved credit card
f***s me how they can pre-approve things without knowing your current situation. I have GE Money ringing and NAB mailing me telling me they've pre-approved me for credit cards... and I'm unemployed! It's just another way of getting people to apply for a credit card...

i just cancelled the bigger of my 2 credit cards

boy they were keen to keep me - the dude was offering to reimburse all the interest i'd ever paid if i changed my mind

might be a good scam i reckon. every few months ring up and say you want to cancel ur card

As someone else said you have a 2nd account and just put little bits of money in it at a time. My friend used to do that and just put like $100 in the account or something at any one time just so he could buy fuel or food or whatever. You don't have to do it that way but it's probably the safest way but seems like a whole bunch of trouble and if you're going to all that trouble why not just get a credit card and as soon as you buy something transfer the money into the credit account before the bill arrives.

I get my salary paid to my transactions account which is the Visa Debit account. Then I transfer my savings into my savings account immediately, which rarely leaves more than $500 for anyone to steal.

Not really that much trouble seeing as you can just jump online and transfer from one account to the other. I'd like to avoid having a credit card for as long as possible, even just for simple reasons like having a credit card affects your application for a homeloan etc.. Just seems easier to me to just transfer from one account to another online, and only have money on the card for when you need it so that no one can ever really take anything off you.

^^ that's exactly what I said....

how does having a credit card affect getting a home loan? If you've never borrowed money before you won't have a credit rating at all, having a credit card and paying it off on time I would assume would get you a good credit rating telling the banks you're good at paying off loans. If anything I'd say that would be a GOOD thing.

It's not so much the credit rating, but just the fact that you have a credit card they make the assumption that whatever your limit is, that's what you will spend, and therefore affecting how much money you can afford to pay back on repayments each week.

I just changed from Suncorp to ANZ credit debit. Anz have the same fraud cover for the debit card as credit. No idea what Suncorp's cover was like - most likely non-existent.

VISA Debit Cards have the same fraud protection as VISA credit cards.

Whether its your money, or credit, that is stolen - it is still covered in the same way.

Australia doesn't have a 'good credit' rating system like you hear about in the States.

What you've paid off doesn't matter when they assess you for a loan. They only consider your income, assets and expenditures - including debt repayment, and any bad credit history you may have. Any credit cards are assessed normally as what the repayments would be if you have them maxxed.

An easy way to improve your application for a big loan is to reduce your credit card limits or get rid of them altogether.

Girlfriend just last week had 200 Euro charged to her credit card by someone in France. No idea how it happened, but St.George picked up on it and froze her account (which has delayed the transfer of money she owes me too >:( ).

Since she doesn't have a passport, it was easy for her to prove that it wasn't her, so St.George refunded the money and have handed it over to their fraud department. Pretty crazy s***.
