Here's how my week goes:

Monday: wake up, lie in bed swearing about it being Monday, get up, go to work, work, come home
Tuesday: wake up, get up, go to work, work, come home
Wednesday: wake up, get up, go to work, work, come home
Thursday: wake up PUMPED because I get to play soccer on Thursday night, get up, go to work, work, come home early, have early dinner, go to soccer, play soccer for 2 hours, come home, can't sleep for hours because I'm still pumped from soccer
Friday: wake up, go to work, start drinking around 10am 12pm 5pm and then party and relax until the cycle begins again.

The rain ALWAYS decides to come on f***ing Thursday just to piss me off.

Hah, centrelink pays for my skydiving rather ;) 10 jumps a fortnight via the taxpayers ftw.

I just don't get why you only leave yourself 2 hours for something you obviously enjoy so much... meh? Whatever makes you happy.

Anyway, enough derailing from me.

Well I used to play on Sundays as well but the season just ended. Team sports aren't just something you can go off and do whenever you want unfortunately; you need a bunch of other people to make it fun.

we (i.e. employed people) subsidise CHUB's lifestyle.

there are those who give to society and there are those take away.

I can't think of a good reason for him to do it either - if the govt is prepared to give people money for doing nothing, you'd be pretty crazy not to take it. It's much better than the alternative, which is giving the government your money.

ive done the 'nothing' thing on government funding(off on medical). i had stacks of fun and my partying was mostly subsidised by a friend

im much happier working though, in a job in enjoy getting more than the government will ever give me, and still have just as much fun/party time as i did when i wasnt working.(and some partying still subsidised by a friend!)

Are you deemed independant from your parents yet?

If you are, base rate is $340 a fortnight... then you get rent allowance on top of that (upto $100, but you just lie and get the $100 anyway). If you're not independant (or living at home with parents) you get $215 with no rent allowance. Work the system Billy ;)

I work 4 months of the year (uni break) at Australia Post. I keep ~$3000 - $5000 spare to cover my board/food for the year and blow the rest on luxuries to keep me entertained for the next year of study.

Upgraded my comp, got a $3000 kitesurfing setup and did my AFF training/achieved my A license in skydiving from the funds saved.

It's a good system :D Since you don't work the entire year, you save up $6000 in "credit" with centrelink, so you can earn $6000 before they touch your payment.

~$120 a week... it accumulates though, so if you don't work one week, you can earn $240 the next week before it's affected. It caps at $6000, that's how I do it, work 1 block a year and have $6000 on credit.

If you go over $120 it's not like they take a dollar per every dollar you earn, otherwise people have no incentive to work... it's scaled, something like over $120 for every dollar you earn they take 0.25 off your payment, over $250 or so, 0.5... etc.

You still end up WELL on top if you work in addition to getting centrelink.

What Chub fails to mention is that if you're not deemed independent from your parents you're unlikely to get the payment because you're means and asset tested against your parent(s') income

I remember back in the day when I was getting payments from Centrelink. I did some calculations to see what effect the hours-worked-at-job penalties made on the total weekly centrelink+job income.

In the end it turned out that every hour that I worked after 5 hours on the job actually had no advantage: it would not actually increase my total income for the week. After my first 5 hours were done, I could either work an extra 20 hours or I could sit around and do nothing and I'd still get the same money at the end of the week thanks to the way the penalties worked.

i don't understand how chub's numbers add up, but i'm pissed off that I pay taxes to fund people studying while i'm studying myself ><
It's simple taggs... if you're independant from your parents... instant $340 + rent allowance (upto $100).

If you're not, it's $215 + no rent allowance... and that's if your parents are extremely poor (if they have any sort of money/assets they will rape your payment).

If you work 25 - 30 hours, you're not going to get either payment.

haha

The field we book tends to puddle up something fierce even with a bit of rain - it must have crappy drainage or something. So its less that we don't like playing in the rain and more that the conditions make playing not-fun. We've had quite a few rain games (see: It Always Rains on Thursdays)

I'd like to clear up something that Chub hasn't explained fully: to meet the requirements to receive Centrelink Youth Allowance, you have to be considered "independent" from your parents, and there's a couple of different ways of doing that. For example, you could live out of home, or you could earn over ~$16k in any 18 month period since you turned 18.

From the centrelink website:

Status Allowance Paid Per Fortnight
Under 18, at home $194.50
Under 18, away from home $355.40*
18 and over, away from home $355.40*
18 and over, at home $233.90
Single, with children $465.60*
Partnered, no children $355.40*
Partnered with children $390.20*
Special rates for long-term income support recipients or migrant English students 21 years or over commencing full-time study
Single, living at home $287.20
Single, living away from home $431.70
Partnered, no children $390.20
http://www.centrelink.gov.au/Internet/internet.nsf/payments/pay_how_yal.htm

Assuming Chub doesn't have children, he's either under 18 (false) or he's over 18 and away from home.

Situation Maximum payment per fortnight No payment if your fortnightly rent is less than Maximum payment if your fortnightly rent is more than
Single, no dependent children $107.20 $95.40 $238.33
Single, sharer, no dependent children $71.47 $95.40 $190.69
Couple, no dependent children $101.00 $155.20 $289.87
One of a couple who are separated due to illness, no dependent children* $107.20 $95.40 $238.33
One of a couple who are temporarily separated, no dependent children $101.00 $95.40 $230.07

So for Chub to get that extra ~$100 he would need to be paying MORE than ~$240 rent a fortnight.

Even though I'm on Centrelink, I've worked fulltime before, paid taxes, and I worked over my holidays like Chub did. To be honest, I don't really have a problem with Chub spending his government money the way he does - at least he is out there enjoying life. While it may be at the expense of taxpayers, he could be doing a lot worse with the money, which I'm sure a lot of other people are.

My little device is saying 31 knots, that's pretty f***ing deadly, could probably get some sick air off my little traction kite.
