I think this was posted a few weeks ago (or maybe just mentioned in a thread).
IIRC, it wasn't necessarily going to be an Australian server per se, but rather one hosted in Asia or smth. |

No, the one mentioned a few weeks ago was for Warhammer online.

If they host one in aus I might actually play an mmo for once.

All the information I've come across indicates that AoC will have two server groups, one for the north/south america and one for europe. Asides from the "recommended oceanic" server in the american group (Gwahlur or something?), I haven't seen any other mention of one.

We're all playing on Bloodspire... pretty sure thats the "aussie" server... but its hosted in the US.
Ping isn't too bad, just the stupid 8pm, 4 hour shutdowns. Ran around earlier and most of the mobs were bugged out :D |

as an assasin the ping is pretty bad imo actually, given the combo melee engine in this game.
I find it really difficult in pvp to get combos to land consistently cos people are (naturally) jumping around everywhere and with the high latency the combo prompts (which you have to wait for, there's no apparent buffer for the input) either flash up real fast or take aaaaaages to come up - within a single fight and often you'll spend a lot of time in stealth setting someone up for a kill and hit the key to do a stealth strike which you absolutely rely on, and suddenly the enemy will just warp and your strike hits nothing I dunno, maybe due to this combat system it just means learning to handle latency differently - might get used to it and not be fazed I always favour US servers for mmo's in spite of ping but I have to say in this case I would much rather a local server |

I haven't had a problem with the lag as a ranger, because you can't avoid arrows unless you're standing on me but I can imagine how annoying it would be trying to melee in pvp.
I've only had to use melee once or twice in pvp, and it's retarded how the americans can run rings around you while you do combos while facing them but it misses completely. I'm all for an aussie server (as long as I can transfer across) |

it's an MMORPG! if you are worried about ping you are focused too much on the trees and not enough on the forrest.
grind grind grind and everything will be ok. |

I don't think it will be happening anytime soon as the data costs will be far too prohibitive for this to work
looking at tens to maybe hundreds of thousands in data every month, this is why no other MMORPGs have servers in .au |

Even if they were to gain a few more customers by making local servers, my guess is it would even come close to offsetting the difference in price of a local server. |

this is why no other MMORPGs have servers in .auI don't think is the reason meself, otherwise we couldn't afford to put out the s***loads of data we do on ausgamers files. an mmo would have more incoming than us, but still more out than in - plus the patcher to help with the outgoing |

sigh, i work for vpn solutions and i can tell you now that we pay alot more for international traffic then we do around australia. with peering companies comming out of our arse such as pipe an australian only server and it's data would cost very little to run.
cmon guys... they use those claims as scare tactics... do you really think people who specialise in data transfer dont pay near to nothing for it? |

Australian only wouldn't happen, it might be based in Australia, but it would have to be accessible to the rest of the world if they wanted to play there.

Name one company in Australia that could sell me 1TB of traffic per month for under $40USD/month - I guarantee not one could do it and still make a profit there are companies in America which have this as their base traffic limit |

well like I said, funcom wouldn't be going to http://www.somepopularwebhost.com.au and filling out the hosting application form - they'd likely try and find a deal with a provider where their type of traffic might be used to offset another and pay either a very heavily discounted rate, or nothing at all
