I play ESP so I recommend any of the lower range LTD's.
Extra jumbo frets, really fast necks (bolt on) and decent pickups for the price. http://www.espguitars.com/ Give them a check out, for a $500 - $1000 you would get an very nice LTD. I guess they're more a lead/metal guitar, suited for the faster styles, but meh... it's what you make of it, if you want to play punk there's no stopping ya. |

I'll be picking up a Jackson JS30RR in the next month or so. They're only around the $530 mark and reviews i've read have put them as a decent guitar. I haven't played guitar for a few years so once I get my technique and all that back I plan to buy a RR3 Randy Rhoads.
I just love the look of these styles of guitar. |

Don't go too cheap with your amp and don't use your speakers if they arent made as guitar speakers, they will sound like s***. You don't need to spend too big, just go into a guitar shop and try out some 15 - 50 watt guitar amps, you will find one you like.
As for the guitar a Jap Fender is a good suggestion, doesn't have to be a strat all Fenders are amazing, or check out some Epiphones or even a Mastersound MS500, again id just suggest going into a guitar shop and trying some out and getting someone to help you. |

Give me your PRS Jim.
Yeah Jackson are good for the $500 - $1000 range, V guitars are a c*** to play though sitting down so be warned :) I've had a few Epiphone Les Pauls over the years, they're pretty decent, medium frets/21 (can't play those anymore), the pickups and hardware are pretty bodged but overall nice build... neck thru body construction. |

one that feels right and plays the kind of music you are into well. Anything else is just brand fanboy-ism.

I wanted Jim's PRS... then I got my Les Paul :)
(that and I'm a lefty.. so itd be rather difficult to play :P) Back on topic, I've had 2 guitars under a grand, my yamaha pacifica 112, which is absolutely fantastic for ~500, kinda wish I never sold it to Tung (who probably doesn't even play it!!) and my maton ms500 (I lie, this was $1100) Both good guitars.. and become even better with a change of the stock pickups :) Best advice probably is to go play some guitars and get what feels best :) |

Don't go thinking you can just plug a guitar straight into your line-in jack and think it will sound ok. You'd need some form of audio interface, not just a regular sound card and they start getting exxy. Just look for a small practice amp with a few basic built-in effects. |

Gibson=win. Epiphone=fail. Well not entire fail... good for the money but it makes me just want the real thing more. I play an Epiphone Sheraton. Biggest factor for me was how it looked. Get a guitar that you want to play all the time, whether it's based on how it looks, how it feels in your hands, or how it sounds when you strum it. Whatever turns you on, go that way. For me, it was 90% the look of the guitar. Fortunately, it's a sweet guitar anyways and still going strong ~8 years later.

I have a 100watt all tube Marshall combo. It's a 2x12 inch speaker bizzo I think. Can't remember the model number. Very loud, very powerful. How much would people be willing to pay for that second hand?

If I wanted a LP that wasn't Gibson and was under 1k, I'd probably go for a Tokai Loverock. Currently playing a Schecter Hellraiser Avenger that I got for $900.

Epiphone Les Paul CustomYeah I played an Epiphone Les Paul Custom for all my teenage years, black with gold hardware. I eventually sold it because the neck wasn't big enough or fast enough, fixed bridge also (I was going through a Vai stage and wanted a trem)... no good for metal/shred. Great for rock though. Gibson=win. Epiphone=fail.Gibson is the most overpriced brand ever, equal with American Fenders. They're nice guitars, but spend $3000+ on a Ibanez or a ESP and there's just no competition. They rely a lot on the name and image to charge the massive dollars. For an amp, just get a Peavey Bandit, $500 - 12 inch speaker, 100 watt solid state, 5 year warranty, delivered to your door... can't beat that for a first amp. Cheaper then all the solid state Marshall amps with an equal (if not better sound). http://www.zikinf.com/_gfx/matos/dyn/large/peavey-bandit-112.jpg last edited by CHUB at 19:02:15 21/May/08 |

fenders and gibsons under about 2k or so are mostly thrown together quickly mass-market, even the US-built ones. I've got an american deluxe strat out of california which cost about 1400 and frankly, it's a horrible guitar to play. it sounds nice enough but the fretboard feels awful especially after going to it straight after putting down the prs. but I've played a couple of the custom shop strats and they feel quite nice

I hear ya. My main experience on a Gibson was on my mates Custom Plus worth about $7000... it honestly felt like I was holding sex in my hands.

Action on my strat was crud (60th anniversary deluxe USA model)...
and then I spent a good 30minutes setting it up properly and now it plays great.. (common sense I guess!) ...until I pick up my gibson les paul (04 standard) which is the best guitar ive ever played.. maybe its got something to do with the fact its been worn in a few years.. i dunno... but it just feels right, i love it :) http://i30.tinypic.com/oucox3.jpg |

I'm posting to agree just because my first amp was an old early 90's model Peavey and I want to defend my crappy purchase descision.. " man I used to suck until I got one... then the whole neighbourhood knew it as well " :P truthfully, it was money well spent. I'm no pro, but it did the job last edited by koopz at 00:11:08 22/May/08 |

diesel if I was you I would go for a cheap ibanez/epiphone les paul copy or jackson and spend the bulk of your money on an amp. Even grab a yamaha, they are a well built value guitar. Carvin's are great guitars and well priced as well but uncommon (my find a second hand one). Any guitar <$2k can be improved by swapping out some pickups. I had a yamaha piece of s*** for years. Anyone who is comparing gear and can only play a few chords and piss ant solos is a wanker so don't listen to them. Tone is in the fingers as they say.
Unless you are planning to play in a band real soon, buy a good quality low wattage amp over some pig piece of s*** just because it has 100watts that you only play with the dial on 1 etc. Wattage doesn't mean s***. This is my SG standard http://www.leadguitars.fr/images/gibson-sg-standard-nb.jpg And my maton EBG808TE http://www.haworthguitars.com.au/images/catalog/product.maton-EBG808TE.large.jpg I play the maton more than anything at the moment. |

f***... I've always wanted an 808. I play a custom Maton Heritage... which is kinda like a 325 but with nicer/better wood, gold finishings and fancy inlays. s***s all over a 325, but I love the tone of the 808's.
