I just bought an ipod and I wanna chuck music on it. Can itunes do this or do I have to go and find something that will convert it over. I've looked at and tried stuff on itunes and I cant figure it out.

I doesn't support mp3 files so i need to somehow change them over to whatever format the ipod uses. Just wondering if itunes can convert the mp3 files to whatever apple use, is it m4a or something like that?

Sorry for confusion.

Ah cool, the guy at the shop said it didn't support mp3 playback. I know itunes can play mp3's but that's not what I use as my player. Prefer to use winamp.

So I should be able to copy and paste mp3's from my PC across in to the ipod and it will work?

So the guy at the store said that an ipod won't play mp3's, but you decided to buy it anyway... why? You want to be a trendy homo?

Of course it plays mp3's, but what I don't get is why did you buy it if you thought it didn't.

In my experience there are definitly mp3 files which will not play on the iPod, nor can they be transcoded through iTunes, just as there are mp3 files that won't play on devices marketted as 'mp3 players'.
The fact that you can't just drag mp3s into your iPod through "My Computer" should be a big clue to you that it doesn't just handle anything you throw at it.

Well with the ipod shuffles you can, once you get the little util that creates the playlist file it reads. Drag and drop mp3's and then run the util and off you go, f*** using itunes. Doesnt realy help people with the proper ipods though.

meh?
I've never had an MP3 that won't play on itunes or my ipod and I've got about 60Gb in there

if your MP3s have ID3 tags set up properly you're all set, if you don't, have fun sorting them

Not supporting MP3s on a music device is like not supporting .txt files in notepad.

But to be a helpful member of QGL, when importing CDs make sure you've set the import settings in Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab > Importing.

Mines on Highest quality VBR with 160kbps min tho i prolly dont need it that high.

This 'Import' setting also dictates what format/quality songs are converted to when you right-click on song(s) and select "Convert selection to ...".

If you've got WMAs in ur library you can just right click / Convert selection then delete the original WMAs afterwards.

Yeah it is more than likely dodgy mp3s made with some anus software with no regard for compatibility, but they do exist in my fkn music collection it seems. Not mp3s I made myself, and more than likely mp3s I've had from before portable mp3 players were popular.

Thanx for the positive feedback from some of you guys. Yeah, this is pretty much the first time I've used iTunes and it doesn't seem as easy as winamp or media player. It might be the same but every thing seems to be labeled differently. Anyway I'll give it another go now, been at work all night so haven't had a good go at it yet.

Oh and if you only see a giant list of songs, hit up View > Show Browser. or alternatively View > CoverFlow View

One issue with winamp i had a while ago was that it would stuff up the video categories. Tv Shows and stuff would move to the movies section of the ipod. I haven't used it since i just use itunes but they may have fixed this issue?
