Sure, we've had our problems with lie-detecting game show The Moment of Truth in the past, but last night, for the first time, it actually lived up to the potential of its relationship-destroying premise. The contestant, Lauren, decided to answer every question, even after her mom asked her to stop. Even after her sister pressed the button to make her stop. Even after the host told her to stop. Spoiler: Bless her cold heart, Lauren kept right on going. Does she steal from work? Yes. Was she in love with someone else on her wedding day? Yes. Has she ever cheated on her husband? You better believe it! At this point, she'd accrued $100,000. But then, in what will likely be remembered as one of the all-time greatest moments in reality-show history, she lost everything on a throwaway question (turns out she doesn't actually believe that she's a good person), thus rendering her marriage-ruining confessions totally pointless. Maybe it's time to start TiVo-ing this show again! Stolen from here - http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/02/the_moment_of_truth_finally_de.html |

billy this says its a pre-recorded polygraph? What the f***?! How does this make any sense? So they know the questions, and they have already answered them, and all they have to do is match their answers? Or do they not know the "results" of the first poly... Either way it's f***ing stupid - polygraphs are not reliable tools for measuring honesty. |

I loved the husbands response..
he knows it's over.. if she keeps going it's just more money for the both of them to split. polygraphs are not reliable tools for measuring honesty. I'll agree it's not a perfect science. if someone has the perception that they're lying a poly will record changes in your body that indicate that. some people are just nervous wrecks - and show poly results can show that they're lying all the time :P last edited by koopz at 12:53:22 28/Feb/08 |

I'll agree it's not a perfect science. It's not even a good science. Have a look around. Start Here and then keep going if you're interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygraph There's a reason polygraphs aren't admissable in court. They're only used as an interrogation technique at all because people 'believe' they work... so will often give the game away under the pressure of being chained to a machine they believe can tell whether they're lying or not. That belief really only comes from American culture. Scientifically speaking, they're a load of dogs balls and aren't accurate at all. |

this is a good comment
WOW, lemme get his straight;she admits stealing cash from former employer; she also had an affair with another man; confesses that she is still in love with her ex-boyfriend; and feels she should be married to her ex. |

And in psychological studies, cops and military interrogators are only about 50% effective at determining whether someone is lying or telling the truth - only slightly more accurate than someone who does not do this regularly. They rely on myths and folklore about how to tell whether someone is lying, partially to convince other people of their abilities - but in reality the behaviour of the 'suspect' comes from the individual, not whether they're telling the truth or not.

No because the actual statistic was like 53.2% for cops/interrogators considered good at their job and 48.9% was the average person. I made those stats up because I don't remember exactly, but it was down around the 50% mark, so it is indeed no more significant than the flip of a coin. Some people would have you believe their powers of lie-detecting are infallible, and the certainty with which they accuse someone of lying is sometimes quite astounding. I'm unclear whether the study was about blind lies or about poking holes in people's stories - because the former would be easier to study, and the latter is more of a technique for getting to the truth, than proving someone is lying. last edited by Idol at 18:49:10 28/Feb/08 |
