Topic: Repair place stole my charger

I took a laptop which was under warranty to a repair place, and I included a universal charger which I bought only a few weeks ago (nothing wrong with it) which I got from Dick Smith because the HP had overheated and kinda melted a bit , and when I got it back it came with a HP charger, and not my charger.

I rang them up and they said I can't have the universal charger back. What can I do? It cost over $100! I'm happy to give them the old HP one. But they say as far as they're concerned they've given us a charger and that's that.

Bull s***!
Go down there...in person and don't leave until you have the charger. If they still resist, inform the customers coming in of the fact that they stole your charger (Ie "Hey mate, I wouldn't give them that charger, you may not get it back")

That is why manufacturers usually write on the return notice to only supply the laptop with no accessories.

They actually told us to bring everything the repair person would need to run the computer! Gave them the OEM disks too.

did you get the discs back?

if this was on somethingawful every reply would be "call the police"... so why not see what happens in australia if you call the fuzz, front up in the cop car then when he's not looking.. WHAM, the old fork in the eye

make a placard "this business steals chargers" and picket the store until you get satisfaction

Yeah I got the discs. Anyway they say they've destroyed the charger. I should invoice them for it...

+1 ACCC or Police.

Or just the threat of either might make them hand it over/pay for it.

It's one thing to admit they didn't realise you had a different charger to the usual HP one. It's another to blatantly lie and say they destroyed it. what f*****s

Yeah i've seen some pretty terrible things happen even at the ipod repair shop, they wouldnt take the ipod without the original case and all the cords. When it came back it was just the nano in the bottom of a delivery bag.

It's yours, they are required to give you your equipment back

I know whenever I book an item in for repair I ALWAYS make a note on the job sheet of the attached items (power packs/charges recovery cd's etc) and hand back anything unneccesary for work/repair and a quick mention of any physical damage that's evident.

Saves a hell of a lot of hassle for everyone

Perhaps they damaged it or something and figured they'd just give you a new one and hope you wouldn't care. Obviously you do, so make more noise about it and do what you can within the law to get it back.

never deal with plebs.. always deal with the manager (someone who you get the name/email/phone details of).

if you signed a service form that said you just handed a laptop by itself and nothing added then the fault is yours and yours alone. learn from it.

as Kat said:

welcome to the information age Idol. next you're going to tell us your super fund provider has robbed you of $10 every week you've been with them because they think you're a smoker just cause you work in IT. DUH! most of us in IT smoke (apparently =/) If you don't tell them then they don't know *not* to take the money. Read the fine print!!

There is no way to find out who is behind this "Notebook Depot" business on Mary St, their website has a 1300 number which connects you to the national hotline, who relay messages to the place, but there's no way to contact the place directly.
