I have noticed recently the advertising regarding the upgrade to the graphics to this game and it has taken my attention.

Does anyone play this or recommend this game?

I know that it has been around for awhile but it sounds interesting.

I played it, it got dull fast.

Mining asteroids is the dullest thing to pay to do, ever. And the combat is point and click, I'd kill for a space flight sim MMORPG :) Guess bandwidth would be a problem there.

If you really like flying around in space, it's the only real MMORPG available to you.

I played it for over 3 yrs and it is (IMO) the best MMO out there. The depth it goes into is just ridiculous and that is the problem, it just became too deep when you get involved with capital ships, alliances, running a big corp, politics, etc. That's the main reason I stopped playing was it eventually just started mimmicking real life in a very very scary way, and nobody wants that with a game!

The first 3-4 months will be s*** because you can't do alot to compete with the big boys until you get your training skills up but after that it gets alot of fun, just be wary of stepping up into a role within your corp/alliance because it will consume alot of time.

Yeah and a new corp may make you go down on every member of the board in exchange for a loan to buy your first cruiser...

There are Aussie/NZ players but all the good corps are Europe based so your s*** out of luck playing at a decent hour.. and downtime is 1hr every night from about 9pm-10pm AEST

If I start, how much currency (ISK?) do I need to make to start enjoying the game?

Not that much, Eve is all about skills and since it takes time to level up your skills, the Isk won't matter a whole lot until much later in the game (think about 6 months down the track).

Just run agent missions and stuff like that, it'll get you a nice stockpile of isk before too long.

Is this game like WoW, that is, you need to grind to get ahead?

Yes.

You don't have to grind s***. All character development (skills) is based on time. To train from level 1 -> 2 might be 10 minutes, then 2 -> 3 might be 2hrs, then 3 -> 4 might be 12hrs, 4 -> 5 might be 7 days. You just set your skill and log out, no need to do anything with it.

If you need isk, then it's easy to come by at higher levels.

I laugh when they say skill.

At least wow involves some sort of coordination, this just is whoever has paid them the longest has the best stuff.

Not really. Skill in Eve is not just about which buttons to click but about how to fit out your ship if you're solo or in a gang or in a fleet.

I've seen a 2 month old char in an interceptor (small little ship for those who don't know) destroy a battleship (bigger ship) that was being flown by a player of 2 1/2yrs. The reason is that the BS wasn't equipped to repair or escape so he got nailed. It's a rare occasion but it is possible. There's no way that WoW or another MMO could allow players on different ends of the experience gauge to compete like that.

Hell you can't even compete in PvP at level 70 in WoW unless you're decked out in arena gear.

I played the 2 week trial, I enjoyed it but got a little bored when flying long distances on autopilot. May give it another go sometime down the track.

Yeh this game gets boring if you're not dedicating that much time to it. Played for about a month, ended up just mining all the fkn time.

Mining is the dongs, but now a days there are alternatives to making isk such as agent missions (which can then be specalized in combat, courier, etc). Hell if I can be arsed re-activating my account I could drop you 10mil so you don't have to do crappy mining.

By far the first thing you should do is find a decent corp though as the game really expands when you play with others.
