Topic: GA TF2 Ladder team?
ctd
Posts: 5604
Location: Brisbane, Queensland

Anyone interested in creating a team for the GA TF2 ladder? You need 8 players for a team and it would be a nice change from the public servers. No serious pro gamer stuff, just for a bit of fun. Probably just rock up for a ladder match once a week or whatever, not interested in committing much beyond that.

If anyone is interested say here and get something happening.

Nah, whatever 8 people. I don't mind playing any class, though I couldn't demo to save my life.
Once 8 or so people confirm some interest we can discuss some specifics like classes and availability.

They need to f***off critical hits for serious matchplay... anything less is just a joke.

Yeah while fun for pub, its a bit stupid and can often be the deciding factor in a round.

ET he probably sat around stabbing his THC clanmates over and over on a mostly empty server ;)

I highly highly doubt anyone could go 86 backstabs without accidentally getting blown to s*** by some random explosive ordinance or lit on fire by a pyro doing some flaming pirouettes.

So don't feel too bad.

I'd be in, can check stats on steam:

J/Loki

Pretty insane handy with sniper rifle. (Not sure why SteamID stats aren't all that accurate. - e.g. most kills in one life is a lot higher than displayed for sniper - Engineer says max sentry is 8 when I got 16 for the achievement etc.)

Pretty good at scout (64/5 best score with caps + defenses :D )

Pretty good at soldier or medic.

I must be missing something; I can see how this game'd be much more fun playing proper teamplay, but man otherwise it's just sooo unengaging. I just can't get interested in what I'm doing. I felt more or less the same about the original TFC so that's prolly why, but I was hoping there'd be a little more to the game after 10 years or whatever of development. Looks f***ing lush as though

Squarky and vegetable I will add you after, roster is locked because of match. It is only freeplay mode so I dont think people the opposition will mind if 'invited to join' people play.

Booked Date and Time: Tuesday, 6 November 2007 @ 09:30pm AEDT - 8.30pm QLD time.
Start Map: cp_well

At this stage I'd say whoever rocks up can play. If everyone is keen then I am not sure how to decide the lineup.

Yeah stats possibly, though I don't think it will be a problem unless this team proves popular.
I have only thought a little about strategy, imo: 2x medic, 2x soldier, 1x spy, 1x heavy, 1x scout, 1x engie. That would be a fairly attacking favoured class selection, maybe mix it up with a sniper which is pretty effective on cp_well and maybe a demo to go defensive. Anyway open for discussion.

I cant believe you dont like it Trog. I really thought you'd be all over this one like a rash. We have a ball playing it. It reminds me of how MP game play should be. Ie, fast and furious.

BTW, Fav classes for me are Soldier (my best score of 39 was soldier) Heavy or Engineer if one is needed.

I have been playing mostly Engineer and Demoman followed by Soldier, but I am really liking Pyro atm.

I tend to respawn as whatever suits the situation eg. if I can see an opportunity for an Engineer to set up in a good spot I will go as Engy for a round or two. If they are bunched up somewhere I will usually go in as Pyro to burn those suckas up.

Obviously playing with a structured team as opposed to jumping on solo requires different tactics etc. Dunno if anyone here ever played Kingpin but TF2 really reminds me of that style of Team Deathmatch.

I haven't really played Spy at all; I haven't really taken the time to learn the spy arsenal. Played Medic once or twice only, as you tend to get a more patchy game when playing against miscellaneous online players.

My two personal faves would depend on the map.
Usually Engineer and Pyro.

how to do an uber rocket jump:

to do an uber rocket jump every single time, hit the crouch button just before you do a rj. demonmen can also do this with the sticky bomb. crouch just before you shoot it onto the group and you will get an uber sticky bomb.

Really?!? I find it the exact opposite, slow and tedious. The run speeds for all but the scout are really slow - a typical round for me is:

Wait 15 seconds to spawn
Spawn
Spend 10 seconds running out of the base
Kill a couple of people
Die
Wait 15 seconds to spawn

Depending how long it takes in the "kill people and die" phase I might get like 10-30 seconds of actual play out of 25 seconds of waiting to spawn and trying to get out of the base.

I'm still playing it, I'm going to give it a bit more of a chance, but the whole thing seems really noob friendly (which I totally understand why they did that)

yeah, some of the bigger maps really need good engineers laying down the teleporters otherwise you for ages before you get to a contested area in CP.

in CTF it is a bit quicker because the action is more spreadout.

1. soldier
2. scout

As I said before though I'll give anyone a good run for money with any class bar demoman (I am worst in australia at demo).

I can't see why people would dislike this game. Best fun I have had on an MP or SP game in ages.

edit: I challenged Bushrangers because they were the highest team available. Teams down the bottom may not show for games. Also this team is obviously destined for number one.

Trog you just need to get better at evasive action.

After you've set some 10 min+ records for staying alive with various classes you should be enjoying it a bit more.

Try playing as medic or engy, both of those classes usually have a longer life expectancy than the others too.

Also make friends with a medic and go on a few extended rampages, they are always rather enjoyable :D

On the topic of actual match maps, I really hope they don't use gravelpit or dustbowl... They can be too unpredictable being the progressive kind of play.

I would personally much prefer to see the symmetrical maps only for match play.

The thing to remember guys, is TF is kind of like a dynamic FPS as far as strategy goes.

Good to have a strat/plan to begin with, but the class you start with. You almost certainly won't play for an entire match.
Need to adjust classes etc. for opponents strategy.

Do you have to do the following to be in the comp?

Steam ID
Your SteamID is used to validate your team membership in GameArena competitions/tournaments using the STEAM system, such as Counter-Strike. To obtain your SteamID, connect to any STEAM game server. Once connected, bring down the server console by pressing ~ and then type 'status' - your SteamID will look something like this: STEAM_0:1:23456. Please enter the entire value, not just the numbers from the end.

No, IncrEdible_vEgetable you don't need your steam id set to play in the TF2 ladder.

This ladder will be pretty easy going (compared to the draconian bulls*** that is the css ladder).

I'm okay to play as Medic/Demoman/Pyro/Scout. The only class I wouldn't put me in as is Spy, there is just something weird about sneaking up behind guys......but hey, you go for it Strex.

Let me confirm.......match times are Syd/Melb EDST? So our match on Tuesday at 9:30 will actually be at 8:30 Bris?

Are we using in game voice or ventrillo? Does ET have to play (he's really bad, even worse than at quake)?

Just noticed in fine fine print in the Profile settings page on GA theres this "Please note: You will require an email address provided by an Internet Service Provider - webmail addresses such as Yahoo or Hotmail aren't accepted."

I had a Gmail address listed in there, changed to a Bigpond one now.

Dudes, you don't need an email. Goto the rankings page and look for QGL team and click on the 'recruiting' button.

The ladder will switch from freeplay to LIVE on Monday the 5th of November (any freeplay challenges will be cancelled at this time)

boooo, our game is cancelled.

Dammit just as the game started I had to go get dinner.

Oh well.

Played some custom maps tonight on the GA Custom server. Castle, crazed acre and another one I think called mach2. Two of the ones I played (castle and mach2 I think it was)have big wide open outdoor spaces, so a bit of a sniper fest but good for something different.

mach2 has a side doorway obscured from the oposing sniper positions. theres also a drain/tunnel system if you want to try and go the sneaky way.

out of the maps running on the GA custom map server, my favs are mach2 and warpath_b3.

We need to sort a team for Sunday Night, roles for people and some sort of a starting strategy. I would suggest that everyone has 2 roles so we can change up if we need. My thoughts are:
Starting Lineup
Soldier x 2
Medic x 1
Spy x 1
Sniper x 1
Engineer x 2
Demo x 1

Sniper is obvious. Soldiers, medic and spy attacking. Engineers setup between ramp and stairs. Demo watches front entry and sewers.
The changeup will be:

Engineer/Medic
Engineer/Heavy
Demo/Pyro
Spy/Scout

I reckon we are always going to want 2 soldiers, 1 medic and 1 sniper. As needed we would change up the other roles ie. if they have got spies operating, use the pyro to flush them out, if they aren't using engineers then spy swap to scout for the faster intel runs, if they have too many soldier/heavy medic combos then we add medic or heavy to combat.

I don't think it is going to allow too many strict strategies to be played. I would work on the soldier/medic combos grabbing the intel, spies clearing sentries, sniper watching bridge. Keep it simple and keep the communication going. Maybe we should use ventrillo so we can speak during respawns?

i haven't seen spy be very effective against clans who aren't total noobs... also what map are you playing on - each map tends to have better combos of classes.

i'd def get 2 medics, one for O and one for D

well i could be wrong but i do know a few people in a clan who've been scrimming the clan you're challenging - i doubt spy will be effective.

on D i'd have sniper, engi, soldier & either demo or medic.. i'd tend towards a medic because skilled demos are hard to come by

on O: soldier, medic, 2 others.. not overly important. more important is that the 4 on O always stay as group and medic keeps them all up as much as possible.

that's what i'd start with and adapt as the game went on.

Spies are most effective in their cloaking / sentry takedown, not their mimicking. If they are relying on sentries for guarding choke points, spy is a good bet to either slip it or take it down (combo with rocketboy if need be).

I'd expect demoman to be better than medic on defense as you have goodie hut and engi supplies to keep you tanked. It would be useful if you wanted soldier/medic or fatty/medic for defense against a 4+ push, but I've found soldiers / demos more agile and versatile for defense than comboing up.

Make sure scout / spy talks heaps. Their main role is providing feedback for defense layout. That makes soldier alternate routes much more effective.

If it's going crap, try some whacky offenses like 4 spies, 6 scouts, etc. You can really mess up a good defense and change the game pace.

Since you are challenging, do you have to claim a win? if it does to sudden death and all lose, is that a loss of challenge? If so your offense is gonna have to ramp up toward the end as it'll be virtually impossible winning at sudden death if the other team doesn't have to fight.

The train rocks. one time I was demonstraing to my wife & brother about the train. I'm pointing at the flashing lights and looking down the track for it and I get this odd feeling I'm looking the wrong way. Sure enough I get pasted from behind as the train rumbles through. Everyone was laughing. Yeah, nice demonstration.

Well you guys in charge need to pick a roster to play.

Also how does it work with reserves? What if someone crashes out and can't get back for 5min, 10min, never? Are there spectators allowed that can take a dropped members spot?

I am quite happy to take an engineer spot if one is needed and noone else wants to do it.

Also loki is out due to work afaik so someone else will have to take over the sniping duties.

afaik you can't ever have more than 8 in the server at any point in time. no specs.

if you want to sub the person leaving has to leave before new member joins. so if someone crashes and cant get back in i'm pretty sure you can put a new person in as long as they're on your roster.

I'm happy to go in as demo/pyro/medic. Or if we got too many then I can sit it out, happy either way.

IMO Demo rocks for defence. Setup on the grate above entry.....sticky the entry walls. If they get through to intel then can usually sticky the top of ramp before they get up and spam down the stairs.

You should put eK in my place as sniper if he is available.
(1 vs 1) He's probably the closest out of anybody from our team, or even pub that really provides a challenge.

If you miss your shots as they're dropping down the deck or don't finish them off you need to drop down fire off a few shots (use snaps, dont charge up for long), hope to kill (generally go for the medic of course) then fall back to the hallway (sit in the doorway just where underneath the stairs is, you can get anybody coming up the sewer or through the front doors that way (unless the RJ/Pipe up the grate to spawn).

When they come around the corner, fire off a shot or two (probably most you'll get is two if you miss as you'll have gren/rocket spam heading your way).
If you hit and kill, stay put for the next person coming around, if they moved as a massive group, move out and go up the stairs. Sit near the spawn doorway, pop in and out for shots.
Go for head shots and don't bother charging up, just duck out, hit right mouse left mouse (any zoomed shot even for 0.01 second will kill engy/spy/scout/sniper to the head).
Lastly, keep in mind, the sniper rifle is like the old DoD rifle, it's pinpoint accurate to the VERY center of your screen overy -any- distance, zoomed or not. I don't do this; but the old pinpoint blue-tack on the monitor trick might work/help (for quick R-Mouse, L-Mouse spam).

Keep cycling like path if you can, you wont get deck raped and they won't know where to expect you (most people expect snipers to run, get health and come back to the deck).
You can also cycle back around and drop in behind them, and snipe them from behind in your own base, you can usually get the medic this way (if there's a stand off at the courtyard, drop in from the deck, go to the sewer stairs and you can usually take out their medic and more).

Anyway, that's a rough idea of the plays I'd be tossing around for sniping on 2Fort if I was there on Sunday.

Goodluck guys =D

Registered on the TF2 QGL forum under my old gaming nick, The f***you Man.
I will play as [QGL]FUM though, so as to not offend any delicate sensibilities.

AHahahaha I woned so hard on dustbowl as a demo (with some help from TE Seven as medic] that I forced an entire team to quit and then the server emptied:

Score as of 11 minutes in the map remaining.

109 kills, 24 deaths, 38 destruction. 167 points :D

Basically score was that high every second sticky was a crit, literally :)

[edit] oops, ignore the second half of the image (I have duel monitors and only paint installed so didnt realise it had both in there)

Why does everyone else have a 300 ping?

edit: except for the other guy with about the same number of kills as you.

Speaking of dustbowl pwnage.

I was only there for the last 3rd of the map and managed this.

The 2nd stage start is the best place to hold them down.

If you have 2 demo's putting stickies down into the ditch part past the pregame blocking doors with at least 1 SG on the hut roof for cover and to push ubercharges back into the wall the kills just roll in.

yeah, i've played that several times where the team other team just wouldn't rush on through, and were jsut cannon fodder.

Especially if you got a few dispensers handy too.

Playing defense on dustbowl is my fav out of everything.

I have some sneaky spots to put stickies and most of the nubes never learn and just keep coming back over and over and over to get gibbed.

Was a f***en epic game ey. 3-2 to QGL.

We grabbed the flag from the enemy base just as the timer was about to run out which forced it into overtime. Really intense for a bit and awesome fun.

Woulda been sweet if GA had some source-tv set up.

I can make all 3 games... wow, not likely to happen again (im on 5 days off luckily).

I offer to take defensive soldier and/or switch it up with a defensive-offensive sniping position.

If you'd like, our team is on the GA ladder also and would be up for a regular scrim.

We go by Physical Damage, and a few of our members are regulars round here. PM me or go to our dodge forums and we will work something out. Physical Damage Forums

I mostly play as Medic or Engineer. Prefer the support classes. If I'm playing I'll play any class that's needed though.

Edit: Availability...between 6:30 and 11:30 week nights. Weekends whenever. Just need a few days notice :)
