I had never ever heard of something like this before in my life, now I REALLY want to get a hold of some.

From http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/miraclefruit.html
The fruit is a small bright red, ellipsoid berry approximately 2 to 3 cm long and containing a single seed. Although not sweet itself, when a single fruit is eaten and the fleshy pulp allowed to coat the taste buds of the tongue and inside of the mouth, an extraordinary effect occurs. The fruit will now allow one to eat a slice of lemon or lime without wincing. The marvelous aroma and inherent sweetness of the citrus remains but the sourness is almost completely covered. The effect remains for some 30 minutes or more.

So basically, it alters the protein receptors in your taste buds and changes the way you taste certain flavors. Its been suggested that it could make a powerful artificial sweetener because you could add much less sugar to products like coke and maintain the desired sweetness (which is mostly to counteract the acid they add - acid tastes sour FYI). You might say "lol why the f*** would you want to eat a lemon" but you would be a tool because everyone knows, lemon and lime has awesome flavor and walking up to someone and slamming a whole lemon like it was an orange would be funny.

The problem is, its very hard to find in Australia. Some websites from japan sell a powdered, tablet form which is apparently much less potent. Ive found a place which sells seeds but growing sounds like a major pain, long duration before fruiting and no patience don't mix. Google doesnt turn up a whole lot but Im not skilled in the googling arts...

Find me miracle fruit!

They sell it at Tropical Fruit World near Murwillimbah (sp?) in Northern NSW.

It's cool. I had one then drank a beer. It tasted sweet. Definitely not something to go drastically out of your way for though. It's not that cool.

saw this on beyond tomorrow. pretty neat. i think they were going to use it for food like cakes etc that have had all the sugar taken out of them so that they are healthier for you, but still taste sweet because of the fruit.

i had some of this stuff over 10 years ago, it use to grow on the back fence of an old redneck friend in cairns, youd jam the fruit that looked more like a seed from memory for about a couple of minutes then we would take huge bites out of a lemon skin and all. made the lemons taste like bland yet sweet orange. our bowels regretted it later though.

Sprinkle a bit of salt on lemons and then eat them it makes them taste less sour.
