So, how long until the machines start thinking for themselves and decide we all must die?

so I take it you didn't even read the article you linked to? They want to install these things in unmanned aircraft. Ever see that (s***) movie Stealth? When I made my comment I didn't even think about terminator, was thinking more about this movie.

I'm more concerned about the ethical implications which have discussed in the Ghost in the Shell series. well it actually be alive or exist? will it have knowledge of that existence? I think therefore I am and all that stuff. and most importantly... if it is aware, what is stopping it going on a bloody thirsty killing spree just for the hell of it?

It will be bound by the "3 Laws" man. Nothing can interfere with the 3 Laws.

while i think that it is very cool what he's doing, having a name like Dr DeMarse (doctor dumbass) is quite unfortunate.
but still, the applications for this sort of processor are amazing. but on the "i think, therefor i am" scenario, it will be interesting if eventually they can develop a sentient artificial intelligence. when that day comes, i say we call it "Bob". |

How exactly does the brain know when it has crashed? And how does it know that this is an undesirable result? I mean, what was to stop it from learning how to crash more often, rather than avoiding it?

From what I've read the neurons are within a small glass dish surrounded by 60 electrodes that measure and stimulate the neurons, input and output. By stimulating the neurons with precise timings the natural biochemical pathways are encouraged to push neurons to form synapses with other neurons. You perhaps stimulate various clusters of neurons until you've hit a patch that stimulate an output cluster that the computer reads as banking left. Once you get that happening, you could continue to stimulate that cluster for several hours and days and greatly reinforce the neuronal synapses, to the point where they are almost unbreakable. You perhaps could do this for all of the required outputs until it can completely control a plane. I guess as the plane is flying the neurons are getting stimulated and stick around longer, when it crashes those neurons aren't stimulated any more and begin to break up. Eventually you may have an arrangement of neurons that has been coaxed to fly for a long time as they are continuously reinforced. Something like that but 100 times more complex, at a guess that is. |

Yes, well, apparently it could navigate mountain ranges too, so I would assume that you're right about it being 100 times more complex =P
Very good explanation though, thanks. |
