JB Hi-Fi have gone back on their commitment to back only Blueray media and players, after Paramount decided to support HD-DVD.
"We have come to the conclusion that cutting the consumer out of a HD DVD opportunity was not right, as content is critical and the move by Paramount to support HD DVD exclusively influenced our decision."

No s*** idiots
Anyways, another loss for Sony.

If you're really keen and don't care about getting stuff shipped internationally, the LG GGC-H20N Bluray/HDDVD combo drive is out now in Japan and works out to be about $353Aus.

I just wish of the formats would win already and the other would go away. I'm past caring which one wins, but this whole thing of movie studios like Paramount releasing on one of them and not the other is annoying.

ooo I'm quite tempted to get that. There wouldn't be any region problems 'cos you can change it like 5 times or something right?

If that's the case, I may just fork out for the xbox hd dvd player. What are they like quality wise? The built in dvd drive in xboxes in the past has been less than average and even brand new 360, mine complains about a brand new game dvd on occasion.

I believe HDDVD is completely region free (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that), BluRay movies can be region locked, it just depends if the movie studio wants to enforce it or not, some do, some don't. There's a pretty comprehensive list here as to which movies are and which aren't region locked.

i've had no problems with it so far yet my 360 does what yours does

HDDVD is region free, however if you do not have a hdcp complient monitor/tv it won't play unless you use a program like anydvd

Yeah, but Japan is 110V same as the US right? Step up transformers are bulky and expensive. The Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is dual voltage.

At least HD-DVD is region free, but wouldn't the BD drive only support Japanese discs? what's the point in that?

Hmm, I would say that only applies to the PSU and not the other components in the PC, I've bought other parts from the U.S. in the past e.g. Motherboard, Video Card, Raid Card and HDD's and never had any probs with power, can't imagine it would be any different with an optical drive.

Probably would really comes down to whether the drive is hardware region locked or not and that would only of course apply to disc's that enforce region locking but it is a fair point. Apps like Powerdvd also tend to give the option to change regions on the drives (well dvd drives) so many times but I don't know whether this will apply to BluRay or not.

Whilst you could probably play 80% or HD Media, that other 20% of titles that *might* not be able to be played could be frustrating. Unless there was concrete evidence saying one way or the other, it would be a risk early adopters would be taking. Personally I'm happy to wait a bit longer, I'd say we'll see a flood of these types of drives worldwide next year.

We just bought another 2 more speakers...
We have
Onkyo SR 803
With ADD 7.1 Speakers
LG 42" DLP Rear Projector

All we need now is DVD to come out with 6.1 or Blu/HD to be cheaper so i can get the full force of 7.1 surround sound....

All i can say I love my onkyo!!

Wow, PS3 runs Linux. Too bad you can't do anything useful with it. That doesn't make mini-disc, a-trac, beta-max, UMD, memory stick any less s***-tastic. Both hi-def optical disc formats are proprietary but BD is region locked, HD-DVD isn't - the format war was won right there for me.

That said, give me DRM-free digitally redistributable files any day.
