The Age's Screenplay blog bears word that yet another title has received the big RC due to Australia's lack of an R18+ rating for video games.
Activision's Soldier of Fortune: Payback has become the second game this year to be refused classification by the Office of Film and Literature Classification.

The game was to be released in early 2008 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The ban comes at a time when the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia is stepping up is campaign for the introduction of an R18+ classification as the country heads towards next month's federal election.

The IEAA says Australia is the only developed democracy in the world without a R18+ classification for games, ensuring titles which exceed the limits of the MA15+ category are refused classification and banned from sale.

Article

Here's hoping the R18+ rating finally gets passed this time around. Might be an interesting situation if a game like this being banned from being sold in Aus ends up being distributed over a system like Steam though.

now's a good time to ask your local politican whether they think you should be able to play this game and what they will do to ensure you can.

politician's caring about games, lol. they just discovered the internet.

Yes, well one might think that this whole protecting the children from the internet thing could be considered a conflict of interest with supporting an R18+ classification on games because omg, they both come on PC's. Any sane person should be able to see the two aren't related but I wouldn't be surprised if it got raised at some point. But hell, even little Johnny Howard is into Halo 3 so anything's possible ;)

Doesn't look any more gruesome than the last 2 games, and they were never refused classification. Seems to be the thing to do now.

SOF2 multiplayer used to be s***loads of fun. This looks like it would be as well especially if you can shoot other players limbs off.

Agree with the "doesn't look any more gruesome than the first 2", only now it looks more realistic.

The other thing that looks like is going to be the same is the AI.

i.e dumb as dog s***.

Well, I can't really say I've ever played a game that's made me think "Wow, that AI is really smart". They always run into a wall or something equally as stupid at some point.
