The 60GB Starter pack with an extra controller and 2 games (Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Man) was $999. This new 40GB model has 2 USB ports and the card reader removed as well as no backwards compatibility. Considering the strength of the AU dollar, it's still a f***ing rip-off.

You can also get a US PS3 for less. The US 60GB PS3 is about $560, and the US 80GB PS3 is around $670.

Valve Software boss Gabe Newell has slagged off PS3 calling it "a waste of everybody's time" in a latest attack on the console.

"Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created", Newell told Edge magazine.

"I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."

It's not the first time Newell has slammed PS3. Earlier in the year he called it "a total disaster on so many levels... I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted"

I would never buy a ps3 if it were not backward compatible, how would I play ff7 other than on my PSP?

The whole "no backwards compatibility" just screams "gettttt farrrrrked!".
Stripping features to cut costs? Seriously pathetic, Sony.

Sif I'm going to buy a Playstation, of any variety, and have myself unable to play SoulBlade.

Yeah, but the whole thing is region locked including the blu-ray movies. So you'd have to import every game you buy (perhaps not a bad thing considering US release dates and game prices) and wouldn't be able to hire out blu-rays from Blockbuster etc.

I'm sure they will release many hacks/chips/fixes to unlock the blu-ray region coding, just like every previous method of DRM/Region locking has been cracked by people who are working towards a better, cheaper world

I gave the prices in AUD. The 60GB PS3 is USD499.99(roughly AUD560) and the 80GB PS3 is USD599.99(roughly AUD670).

Nah, theres no region locking on games at all with the PS3, with movies, it depends on the studio that distributes it, some do, some don't. There's a page on wikipedia that gives you a list of what bluray movies are and aren't region locked.

My roommate bought a PS3 + VF4 in Japan for like $550 AUD. No compatibility issues whatsoever.
