Hi all.
I have just recently been thinking about employment and how alot of people get the jobs they have today. so the questions are 1) What do you do? (Job description) 2) How did you get there? (Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) So anyway. here is mine 1) I'm tech support for a company that supplies software to IGA stores 2) i worked at an IGA store for acouple of years (experience with the software), also did an IT course for 12 months at tafe. did 6 months QA aswell. 3) Development / programmer, that or an early grave. |

1) What do you do? (Job description)<
Network and Server Engineer 2) How did you get there? (Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") Education: Triple Major in Ancient History (seriously), 3 years experience at a Telecommunications company in roles ranging from Application Support through to Server/Handset engineer. When I got too hacked off to work there anymore, I posted here, whinging about it and someone PMed me a job ad they'd seen. I applied and got the job. :D 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) TBH, I've only been here for 4 months and am quite happy working where I am. This is a small company with a hell of a lot of potential to grow, and I'd like to be there in 5-10 years when it's a not-so-small company and I'm driving a ferrari :D |

Network and Server Engineer I've already had a "stop using the term 'Engineer' when you're not one" rant in another thread, so I'll move on and instead ask: WTF is a "handset engineer"? Do you create and design handsets using mathematical theory? |

nearly done mech eng at uni, but i took time off that to work for a bit, now im doing engineering type stuff at a mine in the middle WA, drafting mainly... now a bit of database work has entered to loop. which isnt that bad except for the fact im using filemaker. which is the database equivelant of a can of 3year old tuna scrapings smeared on paper scanned into a computer, converted to text, formatted, compliled and sold as a database program. frankly at this point in time id rather tea bag a green ant hill than use this program... oh well, it pays well... oh and if your a big fan dust, rocks, flies, noxious gasses, this place is right up your alley.

Network and Server Engineer "handset engineer" is the f***ing wanky term that my last company came up with in lieu of actually paying us decent wages.. (wanky name !> $$$$) I would probably have called my role Network/Server Admin and Handset Support Technician. |

1) dba sql server contractor - keep the databases running so the permies look good
2) degree in IT while doing government traineeship led to junior dba role internship with a bank. then switched to contracting after losing the junior tag. 3) hopefully can continue to stay in enterprise space, there's lots of competition from people that have used MS Access and apply for the same roles charging peanuts, which can make finding a good new role difficult. i'm not interested in management or architecture, there's plenty of interesting new tech in mssql to keep me entertained. can't go back to permie as the paycut is too severe. |

Job: Character animator/modeler at Krome Studios. Primarily animating though.
Qualifications: Did a Bachelor of Interactive Entertainment majoring in animation at Qantm College. Applied with my showreel and resume, got the job. Future: I've been here for just over 6 months now, but considering I'm only a junior, I've got a fair way to go in my career. As much as I love it here, I don't intend to be here forever, and would love to eventually start my own studio. Myself, Khel, and some other mates have all talked about that happening in the future, but who the hell really knows what's going to happen. |

1) IT Manager / Executive Chef ( well okay, I mostly just man the BBQ )- Pandemic
2) Did IT at QUT but back in the olden days about all they concentrated on was programming, I don't particularly enjoy programming so I got some work doing PC assembly, got a very jnr sysadmin role at an ISP, worked my way up the ladder, left and contracted in the porn industry for 18 months ( there's a lot of call for a qualified fluffer in gay porn ) then was offered a good deal at the old ISP as a contract was running out. Applied for the job @ pandemic haven't looked back. insane perks, great people, etc, etc. 3) Grow the company / my position to an IT director role (well on the way ), or defenestrate the IT director in the LA studio and take his job, roll around in fat lewt, retire early and fish my latter years away. |

1) Chief Operating Officer - Department
2) Finished school, did 1 year of an IT degree, dropped out, moved to London, got a helpdesk job at a IT company through a friend, worked my way from helpdesk to setting up and now running my own department. I've been at the company just over 2 years, my departments primary product is pay as you go IT support, as well as everything else the rest of the company offers, its making a sweet profit and growing at a very fast rate. 3) Middle management anywhere, or moving up to senior management anywhere, or i guess starting my own business etc. last edited by Viper119 at 21:46:50 26/Sep/07 |

1/ 'Transfer Agency Manager' is my title, wooo, essentially we invest & redeem monies on behalf of other people/companies/super funds etc
2/ Work at the CBA doing home loans many moons ago, cracked the s***s - put my CV on job sites, got interviewed for a role in the company I work for today (in Syd of course) worked through various s*** kicking jobs, then moved into management - the client I currently look after has over 100billion euro FUM (Funds under management) we're talking massive trades/deals here folks! 3/ f*** knows, I just want to win the lotto & retire, in fairness, I've relocated to another country with the company (all paid for) and will more then likely attempt to have a stint in US/Canadia once I am finished with Europe - then I'll waltz home eventually I worked for a global custodian (the biggest) and in EU we are the #1 player, so it's all good, they just need to pay me more :p p.s. the stupid c*** of a place kept me there from 8am until 9pm tonight :( ohh the humanity last edited by HeardY at 05:59:01 27/Sep/07 |

I enjoy what I do :) ... and what I earn is good enough for me to live on.
I did 6 months paid work placement (which was part of the course at CQU's accelerated Eng degree) and thought if I do this for another 10 years I will have to punch myself in the face. last edited by -=CluBCaT=- at 08:04:27 27/Sep/07 |

1) What do you do? (Job description)
- "Infrastructure Systems Team Leader" is my title. I look after a small team of System Admins & Service Desk guys for our internal IT team. I also manage our network infrastructure (Asterisk for VoIP, Linux for monitoring/reporting, etc), vendor relations (organising new contracts for our IP network, deploying deploying new video conferencing gear across our region, etc) and some other bits and pieces. 2) How did you get there? (Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") - I have no tertiary qualifications or vendor certificates. I worked my a-hole off from the minute I stepped into my first professional IT job. I saw opportunities for improvement whether it was deploying better software, improving workflows and so on. This is now my 7th year of professional IT and starting from a Level 2 helpdesk, I went onto Level 3 support, Senior Level 3 support, Presales Engineer, Linux Web Administrator, Windows/Exchange Administrator, Systems Engineer, Senior Systems Engineer and now this job. I've done that across 4 companies with 2 of them being quite significant in Australia and the last (my current employer) being the leader in their field globally. 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) - Next steps will be taking the improvments I've done in AsiaPac to the rest of the global IT team around the world.. first stop Europe baby! |

Wow. A lot of people here are in IT. I know it's a gaming forum but I guess considering my mates and I who use these forums have very little to do with IT it's kinda surprising.
Academics: 1) 3rd Year Psych student 2) Tried a couple of other degrees first and didn't like them... worked... didn't like that either. 3) I see myself either as a clinical psychologist, sports psychologist or something else where I can work with kids. Either that or use Social Psych research to get into advertising. As for work: 1) Casual Supervisor of the entertainment room at the RCHF 2) Started volunteering there at the right time and they offered me a job. 3) Hopefully I'll continue to have ties with volunteering and all that stuff on a casual basis for a longtime to come. Ideally it would come into handy having the experience when I'm looking for a job out of psychology. |

1) Web designer/developer, also contract work in video editing
2) IT degree & Film School. Not that anyone else in the company has those kinds of qualifications, so they probably didn't help get the job as much as you might think, though it did motivate me to think I could easily get work doing web dev and apply for those kinds of jobs. 3) Somehow make money out of this internet thing to have made it worthwhile. Dream job: I want to work in visual effects, without actually being a modeller/animator/compositor or that kind of bulls***. I understand that and have done some work of that nature, but it drives me crazy. last edited by Idol at 11:40:32 27/Sep/07 |

1) Sales assistant at Smiggle. All those children. All that white space. It sucks scrote, but pays the bills.
2) Got there by not being able to secure a graphic design job before I went flat broke. Walked in, applied, had job three days later. 3) Taking me nowhere, and driving me insane. Other people's children are monsters. However, it has allowed me the comfort of having an income while I look for a design job. |

1) Bachelor of Commerce/Economics - Probably majoring in finance/quatitative methods. Also work as a casual in a suit store. hey, that's what i said! what year are you in? i've finished the majority of an economics degree and chucking on the commerce dual degree at the end of this semester. i'm doing finance as well. i started out doing the quant meths major (i only need 1 or 2 more subjects to get it) but decided the econometrics isn't for me, hence the move into finace. if you can stick with it though, definately get the quant meths major, you'll get so many rediuclous job offers. hons in economics is bulls*** as well, such good money. a family member of mine is ceo at a QLD funds management company, tried to hire a 2A Econ hons grad from UQ for 65k/year, macquarie took him for 80k+ 1st year out of uni |

3) To the US in January to chase the phat lewtz. Sorry to break it to you N-Dude, but that bubble has burst. The US dollar will continue to decline for a few years. Apparently you can't cut taxes and wage a war at the same time. :) 1. Official (wank) title says "Global Communication Specialist," but mainly I am a marketing copy writer for a major global corporation. I also manage all content on several public and internal web sites and oversee web-based development with contracted database developers. 2. Did BInfTech at QUT for 8 months, dropped out. Then did BA Majoring in ComSci and English. Then ditched ComSci to do double major of English. Then dropped out entirely to switch from part time to full time with my job doing PC building, tech support, etc. Then decided to leave and try my luck in Melbourne. After almost going broke with 5 months of no job, got a job as a Systems Analyst for a few months, until work dried up for the company and they laid me off. Two weeks later I was working as a technical sales guy for an Aussie distributor, which then became a bona fide office for an international company. Switched to work directly for the HQ of the company, but based in Melbourne's office doing marketing copy writing. Then when the company was restructured, I was shipped to the USA. Still here now, with greater responsibilities, and a nice phat pay packet - I also now get an extra week's paid leave because of my long company life. Point of that ramble is that common sense still prevails, even if you drop out of school. 3. Dunno. 5 years ago I was in Melbourne, 5 before that Brisbane. 5 before that I was in Cairns with no clue. So I can go pretty much anywhere. For now though, I'm waiting on my green card. |

1) What do you do? (Job description) Business Analyst, User Requirements. 2) How did you get there? (Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") Bachelors of Information Technology, which proved to open up enough doors to give me a pretty good entry into Analyst positions. 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) I keep getting PM like duties as a part of my day to day analyst things. I’m not sure if I like the PM stuff as a whole. I’m being flown down to Sydney for an interview for a perm position that pays pretty decently. just out of interest, of all you peeps with the impressive job titles who has cracked over 100k salary? Ask me after said interview. |

people who earn 100k should be put in prison or something... i mean seriously... some of us can't even afford petrol to f***en GET to work, and people who earn that much are probably uneducated and unqualified anyway. No professional would ever be faced with that much money.Idol, by that you've displayed nothing more than ignorance unfortunately. I don't earn 100k, But i'm closer to it than i am to an average bludgerigar wage. I can see why some of my superiors do earn that, cos they just are that f***in good. Some of the chaps i've worked with are just plain geniuses, whether through natural talent or bucketloads of the right experience, they are worth the money they're on. |

Oh and Idol, contrary to popular misconception, no-one makes you use that dirty, filthy, overpriced excuse for fuel called petrol. Even on the money I'm on I choose not to afford petrol, LPG for me thanks.
And no-one deserves 100k? Tell that to the neurosurgeon when he gets you back walking again. Tell that to the chief engineer of the multimillion dollar bridge you drive over. |

$100k is pretty reasonable, over that it starts to get a bit silly.
And no-one deserves 100k? Tell that to the neurosurgeon when he gets you back walking again. Tell that to the chief engineer of the multimillion dollar bridge you drive over.To think a neurosurgeon only gets $240k after decades of education/training... that's probably the one job I can think of that can justify (based on principle) a very large price tag. Now dips***s in business or your engineer that gets $500k, I think that's bulls***, spread the money around a bit more. Nothing you can do, skills/experience/education determine your worth... just like people get antsy at CEO's earning $100k a day... if they grow the company $500k a day, he is worth it. I was listening to the radio the other day, the Macquire Bank CEO earns $128,000 A DAY! They compared that to John Howard, the guy that controls our country, who earns $300,000 a year. The world is upside down. |

If your the right man for the job sometimes you need to be paid more to KEEP you working for the same mob. Generally both parties know this.

Yeah that's different though.
My brother earns $250k (plus free food/accomdation) as a tradie, but the working conditions are absolute hell. Very different from the engineer with a 38 hour week in a major city. |

alan moss (ceo of macquarie) was paid around $33m last financial year but only a few hundred thousand of that was his salary. the rest is all performance bonuses. he doesn't get paid unless the shareholders get paid. and he performed very well, hence the bonus.
he's the CEO of one of the top investment banks in the world so he recieves a world class CEO salary. if you pay peanuts you get retards. its all supply and demand. idol you really are pathetic. most people work their asses off to get 100k, you probably never will with an attitude like that. |

Newey went to Red Bull for somewhere around the $5 - $6 million mark. Most likely euro's not pounds.
Odds of getting that far in f1 are fairly remote, but around the $500k AUD mark is quite obtainable, and considering how specialised the knowledge is I think that's justified. |

However that neurosurgeon and engineer wouldn't be able to do what they do without check-out chicks at their supermarket, or the trukies that drive all their food to them, or the Farmer who makes their food. Also their streets would get full of junk from no garbo's.. SURE they could do all that themselves, but then they wouldn't have time to be neurosurgeons and bridge engineers. |

Damn right! Red commie!
Long haired hippy commie! Yer I know that is the basic idea of communism and yer I know it doesn't work cause humans are greedy gits. You still cant deny the fact that those people wouldn't be able to do their jobs without the support of the others. I just want people to respect the garbo/checkout chicks/farmers/bouncers and whatnot as much as doctors and bridge engineers and neurocommies. Not equal pay, cause that wouldn't work, equal respect maybe. Or better yet, just respect people worth the respect and have no need to respect a title. |

$100k is pretty reasonable, over that it starts to get a bit silly. How the f*** are you supposed to buy yachts, cruisers, 5 different luxury cars, a jet, an 8 bedroom mcmansion with pool, jacuzzi home theatre, bowling alley, and chef's kitchen (along with gimp's dungeon), housekeepers, groundsmen, s*** the list goes on and on. $33 million would just get you started. |

1) IT Manager / Executive Chef ( well okay, I mostly just man the BBQ )- Pandemic I read that as, you learnt how to blow a man got a job at pandemic based on your experience, and get promoted regularly for "good service". I envy you ... As for the various creative pay discussions. Salary Sacrifice, unless you have a nice employer, reduces your leave loading and super (entitlements in general). And getting creative with how you get paid is not usually an option for government or businesses with hundreds of employees (unless you are high enough in the management structure that the lackies lick your shoes). |

I am an office/administration coordinator for the QLD branch office of an IT consultancy/software partner company.
I was sourced by the current branch manager who knows my parents and thus knows my work experience/achievements. Have a lot of avenues to choose from, sales account manager or professional services consultant, or marketing and events etc etc. Was approached last week about becoming a junior project manager for the professional services division, so that could be good. Just applied to go back to uni next year and do something completely different through - even though Ill still be working here. So who knows! |

The accountant should tell you to go see a financial advisor.
Separation of advice and the Financial Services Reform Act are confusing but as far as I can tell an account is not meant to give financial advice. My accountant gives me advice, but always preface's it with, I can't really give you advice but have you considered blah blah blah, you should go see an advisor. And here is a little pearl my accountant gave me. It is an offence under the tax act to do something simply to avoid paying tax. You must have a valid reason for using any structure/trust/partnership other than just tax minimisation. |

if the accountant tells you to go see a financial advisor for tax structuring, it's also time to find another accountant. financial advisors aren't qualified to give advice in this area other than high-level, and typically aren't familiar enough with the intricacies of tax law to come up with much more than basic and well-known methods of reducing tax in the first place - with the obvious exception of firms that supplement themselves with financial advisors and possibly legal as well
if the accountant tells you that he won't set something up for you because it's an offence to do it simply to avoid paying tax, it's definitely time to find another accountant |

I'll probably use the job I have now to learn other skills like CAD or something or use my current skills to advance to a position relevant to my degree (these positions exist within the organisation). You don't get it Jim... I wasn't saying "don't do everything to reduce tax" that you can do. I was saying "you have to have a credible reason" or its illegal and the ATO come round with large pointy things and probe you.
eg. To set up a family trust sans a family might raise the interest of the ATO ... A single person with no dependants not running a small business or anything will have a much harder time coming up with a reason for any of the various structures. On top of that, ask your accountant next time, whether they'd recommend a trust or other structure for a single person, with no dependants and limited assets (ie. no house). As for picking an accountant who is actively seeking to break the law ... no thanks I'll give my financials to someone less likely to head to some dodgy pacific island. |

anyone can setup a trust. set up as many as you want (in fact Trusts are a brilliant way to minimise tax AND protect yourself from meddlesome spouses at the same time!).
people are allowed to do whatever they can do minimise tax. But Part IVA of the Act prohibits tax arrangements with the primary purpose of minimising tax i.e. it must be a legitimate commercial structure and not be focussed on reducing tax liability. Even if there is no specific law against the activity Part IVA is a catch all that makes illegal dubious activity. |

nah I get it just fine obes
not being married or not having a house have nothing to do with not being able to set up a completely compliant trust. there are so many valid and sensible reasons for it aside from merely reducing tax and who said anything about picking an accountant who is actively seeking to break the law? that's a silly comment |

agree with jim, there is not really much reason why any person would ever pay more than 30% tax where you can control your income source.
Obviously working for a large corp its different since they have a requirement to pay you in payroll |

You said get an accountant who gives financial advice. They have to have a licence (as a financial advisor) to do that, and once they do they are not meant to give you advice on tax.
Unless covered by an exemption, if you advise or deal, or provide any other financial services, you will need an AFS licence. The maximum penalty, if convicted of carrying on a financial services business without an AFS licence, is $22,000, a two-year term of imprisonment, or both. Reg 7.1.29 and reg 7.1.29A of the Corporations Regulations provide that, for accountants, certain conduct is taken not to be the provision of a financial service under the Corporations Act (the Act). So either actively seeking or ... ? ... pass I have had 1 "event" with the ATO, and the accountant washed his hands saying that he filled in the claim based on the information I supplied (ie. it was all put back on me) ... I now play by the rules rather then play any games. I don't even "fudge" how many donations I made. And its not like my accountant is a dill, they got 3.5 grand back for me this year, 2.8 grand last year. And honestly ... The accountant and advisors I have seen have all said things that are similar to this comment Q. Should everyone have a family trust? some random on the net Negligible assets, yup check no house. Not quite negligible but the only way I could actually do much to reduce their impact is to use a loan against them for an investment (then write the loan repayment off at tax time). Any other options for transferring them attracts a lot of fees and taxes. Income, yup not in the top tax bracket (so even novated leases on cars do nothing, salary sacrificing notebook and super don't drop me below the Medicare extra levy not that it matters cos I am over 31 now anyway) no dependants, check .. heck not even a spouse They flat out said no to setting up a company. They did recommend margin lending and managed funds... and at the time of the advice I almost did. Luckily I didn't because 4 weeks latter and the market corrected and I could have faced some very big margin calls if I had fully leveraged (easily in the order of 40 to 60 grand). So for the moment I'll keep plodding along for long term growth. Point being advisors don't always get it right. And there are risks (even they tell you that tho). And jim ... not everyone has at their disposal the options you have to hide all their income. |

You said get an accountant who gives financial advice. no, I asked some folks why they let their salary increase to the point it attracts more than 30% tax. stinky then replied asking "What other options are there to reduce your tax?" to which I replied "best thing is to see your accountants" you're the one who introduced financial advisors And jim ... not everyone has at their disposal the options you have to hide all their income. 1) no s***. if that's the case, then the simple answer to my original question is 'my current financial situation makes it difficult for me to reduce my taxable income'. it then becomes a question of 'why dont you change your situation?' 2) I don't hide any income |

You can only SS crazy stuff if you work for a not for profit organisation, or as orbitor pointed out, a hospital. I know I saw something on the departmental emailzz the other day that I can SS electricity - i don't know if that is just public servants or employees in general.

accountants represent Yeah me! 1) Undergraduate Accountant (Finished all my accounting subjects though and just doing my IT subjects, so yeah should be graduate). Been there for 11 months and over it! 2) Finishing my last 2 subjects this semester of IT/Business(Accounting) degree at QUT! Started uni in 2002! Can't believe I am seeing the end of it! 3) Doing my CA over the next two years, and getting a new job once I finish uni this semester. Fairly over my small time (4 person) accounting firm. Want something in the city with 10+ people who won't expect me to be an IT tech, Receptionist and Accountant who bills out over 2.5k a week. Or if they want me to be all that at least pay me more than 30k :| (PS anyone hiring?) |

it's fine to say you shouldn't pay more than 30% tax, but what is the point in earning it if u can't spend it? the super hole is now capped @ $50k/year for most people and there's only so much you can hide behind your business. maybe you can spread the income out to a non-working partner, but they look at that closely, and if you are bringing in over 200K i don't see how a normal person (not superrich) can avoid the higher tax rates AND keep the money useable.
sure you may leave half of it in the business account so u do $50k super and $50k in income, but that's $100k u aren't spending on cocaine and hookers so you would've been better of working half as hard. |

Super is all well and good, but it's not the place for all your excess money to go. Unless legislation has changed, Super isn't protected by the reserve bank or the govt. Once our resources boom is over and investments take a dive, you could lose some or all of that money.
Plus I agree, $50k/year into super is pretty nuts, unless you're on really big money. I've got 40 years to provide for Future Stinky, I only have a fortnight at a time to provide for Present Stinky. |

1) Full time student doing an Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.. Undecided if I will follow onto QUT and get my degree. At this stage I don't think it's necessary for my work plans..
Also working part time for my fathers fabrication business.. We specialise in welding pipework that is under pressure and also fabricate structural type applications for oil refineries such as BP/Caltex. 2) Being a family business, I had no choice lol... But I'm getting into it as it's a rewarding job and it's a high paying industry. 3) For many years I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life (I was also working for my fathers business at the time)... I realised I had a good opportunity in front of me and finally decided to take that opportnity and run with the old mans business. Eventually after I finish my studies and work alongside my father for a few years, I will take over the business. That's the plan anyway. last edited by Martz at 13:22:53 04/Oct/07 |

ways at hiding cash you find, tab sportsbet bank. no interest but all you ahve to do is bet once a month ;P
use your fathers morgage house account to let him use yours. Keep cash in hidden spots in teh home, like shirt pockets so when you go out you have cash already =] shares is a good spot also, but jsut take ones that dont move like the low mining ones that have been around for 5 years. but yeah, anyway with the questions 1. work at the wharfs. 2. got job from dads mate(gotta be blood or a friend to get in there most of the time) 3. going to work out there till i die. paying $700 a week tax isnt that bad ;P |

Once our resources boom is over and investments take a dive, you could lose some or all of that money. Both BHP and Rio Tinto analysts believe that the resource boom will be starting to fade in 2011 and pretty much over by 2015. Oh, the baby boomer generation has started to retire. The real influx starts in 2011 and most of them will be retired by 2015. So, combined with the market absorbing a loss of investments on resources, it's also going to find itself filled with millions of investerswho are starting to sell, sell, sell! |

aren't you pretty good with 3d stuff 3dee? Yeah, 3dee is heaps f***ing good at 3D, i seen his portfolio. But the local games industry is f***ed, they require X amount of years exerpiance, so, even tough ppl like me and 3dee have the skill and passion they f***ing give it to some idiot who has x amount of years experience :( So, when no programming games, other alternate is busneiss dev. I practically getting paid atm to re-write a database on SQL. Gonna use Windows Graphics Foundation form .Net 3 and XAML so deployable though web and locally. Pay is awesome s*** too, with pay rise in a few months to the 60k mark. Also getting paid to learn C#, and XAML which f***ing rocks. Peace, and 3dee we gotta start our own game company up in future, lol. |

1) What do you do? (Job description)
Make games 2) How did you get there? (Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") Combination of past programming experience, unf***ing my life, a Qantm degree, and being really persistant. Its not really easy getting your first job as a games programmer when you have no real-world games industry experience, so being in the right place at the right time helps too and having some cool s*** you've made to show off doesn't go astray. 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) Pretty happy where I am now, just gonna get a huge chunk of experience under my belt then maybe travel a bit if I can get some work internationally, eventually setting up my own company and working on my own projects (like Wetwired said, if you get into this industry, and you got a passion for it, its pretty much your end goal). last edited by Khel at 19:15:46 04/Oct/07 |

Fireblood,
I work for a mid tier firm in the city, about 60 odd staff. Shoot me your resume and I can pass it on if you're interested. Our internal HR also place accountants in other firms. So provided your resume looks good and you go ok in an interview, a job shouldn't be too had to come by. |

I was pretty much a bum, yeah. I was employed but I was jumping from rather crappy job to rather crappy job with no real idea of what I was actually gonna do for the rest of my life. Was pretty miserable, knew I didn't want to do what I was currently doing, but didn't really have the balls to try and get into games cos I didn't want to fail at it. I had this romantic notion that holding onto at least the dream of one day making games was better than trying and facing the potential reality that I couldn't do it.
But eventually I grew a pair, did that Qantm degree, and contrary to popular belief actually finished it, and ended up landing a sweet job down in Melbourne in Feb this year. I'm still a bum now, but at least I'm a happy bum with money and a job I love :P |

so being in the right place at the right time helps too My understanding is that your hard work lead you to being at the right place at the right time. and having some cool s*** you've made to show off doesn't go astray. Not just cool s*** that you've made to show off, but being the person who did most of the cool s***, and is able to go into great depth about the design decisions on why and how it was built that way; and how they would improve it in the future. |

It's all about which positions are currently available. You think a games company is going to 'make' a position just for you ? Plenty of jnr staff get jobs straight out of uni/art-college/etc, or even just from a kick-ass show reel. |

I dunno, I reckon recruitment in the Game Industry is handled in a pretty s***ty way, they do treat most of the applicants who have no experience like s*** (maybe not intentionally, but thats the impression it ends up giving off). I never got one single rejection letter from any of the jobs I applied for that I didn't get (Pandemic included), not even a "We received your application but aren't hiring" email or letter or anything from anyone. Even when I followed them up, still no response from most of them, it was pretty piss-poor really. Even with the job I did get, the recruitment was still handled in a pretty hap-hazard manner. I think maybe theres just no HR people in the games industry who know what they're doing (in Australia anyway).
One of the animators who came out of the same degree I did actually applied to Blizzard, genuinely thinking he could get a job there straight out of school. He got a canned rejection letter, then a few days letter got a personal email from the HR guy that just said "lol". last edited by Khel at 23:39:22 04/Oct/07 |

1) What do you do? (Job description)
Maintenance fitter, we rebuild, maintain and fabricate machines which make all your favourite items, be it the roof over your head to the machine that makes a lunchbox. 2) How did you get there? (Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") I started out an apprenticeship as a Fitter& turner, finished that 6 months early and got a job straight away at Bluescope steel, worked there as a contractor and then went on a salary (huge mistake) @ 60kyr plus bonuses. I quit there because the money was s*** for the amount of hours I worked. 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) Well I just got a job at Tyco Water who makes all the huge steel water pipes, should be good since I'm starting on 30.50$ day shift and 34$ night shift, plus 12 hr saturdays @ double time hells yea. Pretty sure the contract there will run out in july next year and from there I will probably try to head into the mining industry as a fixed plant fitter. |

(Education, Experience, "friend of mine gave me the job") Did a graphic design degree at QCA and then got a s*** job paying nothing and worked my asssss off for a year for little/no reward. got fired. spent the next year working in s*** jobs (bottleshops etc) while i did Award school and got my a good idea based folio together. Got my first job in the Ad industry by not taking no for an answer and being very persistent. Started at the bottom doing finished art - went to graphic design - and now I am art directing. 3) Where do you think its taking you? (are you happy sitting where you are? whats your next step?) Move up to the bigger projects here at work - get a better folio together and either go OS or interstate. |

I dunno, I reckon recruitment in the Game Industry is handled in a pretty s***ty way I dunno, I think unless you go through a recruiter this seems to be the norm in both the games industry and the IT industry. and 3dee, I imagine the employ ppl with a few years under their belt because they know how everything works and is meant to be done and possibly have a bit more skill after doing it for so long than yourself (no offence intended). That said, the company I worked for actually just employed 3 junior artists fresh out of uni, so there is hope for you yet. |

I dunno, I reckon recruitment in the Game Industry is handled in a pretty s***ty way Yeah, I think there's a a bit of a lack of communication between the HR departments and the people who are actually wanting the staff. In my case, when I graduated, I applied to all of the major game studios around Brisbane. Firstly, I got all of the "thanks for applying, we'll get back to you shortly" emails, and then a few rejection emails came through. Krome rejected me, Auran rejected me, HalfBrick rejected me, and I never heard anything further from Pandemic. Then, through some weird logic, I got a call from Auran offering me an interview. I go, and they offer me the job, which I accepted. Then, Krome calls me a day before I start at Auran, asking for an interview. I went anyway, just to see what they had to say. They practically spend the interview telling me how amazing my animation reel was (not exaggerating, it was really weird), and offer me a better position than the one at Auran, for a little more money. So, I took that and called Auran to tell the news. Then, a month or so later, I get an email from Halfbrick asking for an interview, and then I get a fairly disappointed sounding email when I tell them I already had a job. I was telling this story to my lead just after I started here, and he was like "What!? They rejected you? I was telling them for WEEKS to get you in for an interview!" So yeah, I'd put it down to lousy communication. |

The only places that I’ve seen that don’t even have an auto responder on their jobs@ address are places that make me question if I really want to work there or not. I mean, if they can’t be f***ed being professional enough to set up an auto responder, then what other professional qualities are they missing. |

Yeah, I think there's a a bit of a lack of communication between the HR departments and the people who are actually wanting the staff. This happens everywhere - I'm trying to find an experienced Level 2/Level 3 support guy and HR do the discussions with recruitiers.. the recruitiers have been sending through juniors or people fresh out of Uni!@% |

I doubt there would be many workplaces that don't have an auto-responder on their jobs@ mailbox. |

Meh, just go over HR's head, find and interview people yourself and then send them to HR to get offically hired.

Actually something I've noticed in the last few years is that everyone I know that wanted to get into the games industry, and had *some* skills to back up that is now working in the industry.

twinsen / 3dee: Yeah I thought he was pretty good, I remember him posting some crazy eye/humanoid which looked wicked. Just keep at it and you'll get there eventually. I work in the games industry although not as a dev. There are many ways to enter the position you want and it's not always direct. You could, for example, work on some hobby projects/mods/open source projects to gain experience and broaden your skill set. You could do some QA work. You could mop the floors and get to know people even. It all helps. Just keep at it.
Plus, if you know you are good, and a company doesn't hire you- there loss right? |

Mongie - Sup dude, been a while. Yeah I applied to a PWC and one of the others (tired) got through to the big f***off full day interview at the start of last year. But wasn't going to be finished my degree until end of this year, thus didn't get through much further (plus the interview was crazy and I had no idea what was going on)
Spook - EMPHASIS ON THE FORMER! They are pretty f***ing comfy though! PS your just cranky because im younger and more beautiful than you Mission - what you got against phatties wearers?! lol (ps former) I am still gonna hit you up though! After exams though, stressful enough without waiting on answer to a job interview. |
