Whats really better, blu-ray or HD dvd, everywhere you go you get a different story, depending on what the store sells. |

whoever wins, we loseQFT! They're both irrelevant technologies IMO. VHS to DVD was a leap....DVD to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD....meh! |

They both are technologies that are just coming out too soon. Sure they have to keep advancing technologies but in reality most people dont even have a TV that can display DVD properly which is only 720×576.
I know most people in here are gonna reply, "Well me and all my cool friends have 1900x1080 lcd's" but in reality most people still have good ol' crt tv's. Another thing I dont understand is why eveyone seems to be pusing people to these high res lcd's when there realy isnt that much content that even uses these resolutions day-to-day. |

The fact that you need to ask the question means neither of them are ready for the mass market. If it's not a real standard, its all going to be suck.

Whats really better Whichever ends up being easier to bypass in terms of DRM, so that you can view the disc that you paid for the way you want. |

no the one we get is going to be goverend by the porn industry, whatever they choose, will be the one everyone will move to. I have to admint Blue Ray looks very good, haven't seen any HD DVD yet.

I'm backing HDDVD purely because it's not Sony. Unfortunately, BluRay I do believe is technically superior.

porn industry chose HD-DVD
bluray is sony's baby, and it shows. region coding.... as for the market not being ready for it, high definition tv sales are phenomenally good, and growing. high def movie format's are the next thing, it just comes down to which one is easier for the end consumer |

haha f*** that man... 1080p movies are the s***.. Crystal clear perfect picture on my sony 1080p Bravia, it's unbelieveable... Better than sucky pixelated picture..
High def is growing fast.. The Blu Ray section at my local blockbuster video store is getting bigger by the week. |

It's unfortunate that Blockbuster has decided to back Blu-Ray. Most of the movie industry too (I'm sure Sony pictures had a lot to do with that). |

I've seen 1080p blu ray and it looked f***ing amazing. But as if pay $4000 for a TV, $1000 for a player then update your DVD collection which would cost a s***load. To be honest, I love cinema so much that I would think about it if I had a job that paid well.
If everyone rejects both, then they'll pull their heads in and release more content affordably on the nets. Right?! |

just get a player that will play both, then it is totally irrelevant.
Blu-ray will probably win just because most stores seem to be stocking just that (blockbuster, jb hifi, most of the stores in the states), and the playstation 3 of course. |

imo (and I really dont care) bluray is going to win, blockbusters move is f***ing huge. it is worldwide, not just AU.
plus the ps3, the dvd in ps2 is the main reason that it sold so well, expect ps3 sales to finally pick up over the next couple years. it's already getting at 100 USD price drop next week (watch e3). |

As much as I don't want the Sony backed "standard" to be the one that wins, I agree it probably will, just cos so many places have bluray discs available now, but HDDVD is kinda hard to find.

I will poo-poo Blu-ray because its Sony.
Beyond that who cares. People with HD TVs are a tiny percentage of the market, and HD media is less then 1% of the market share. XVID and DIVX >> regionalised crap. |

From what I've read, Blu-Ray seems to be the superior tech and just might pull ahead and win the next format wars. Dell is already offering blu-ray drives in their laptops... who the hell wants to pay $800 some first gen POS blu-ray drive in their laptop?

Theres nothing superior about Blu-ray besides Sony's marketting clout. I think its going to probably win the war too, but its not going to be because its the superior technology.
