TENS of thousands of Australian Xbox 360 users have been hit by hardware failures, dubbed the "red ring of death" which could cost Microsoft more than $1 billion to fix.

Indicated by three flashing red lights, the failures have been causing scenes of frustration as out-of-warranty games consoles are returned to stores and internet forums from Puerto Rico to Singapore overflow with complaints.

Also design flaws/faults from the first XBOX are still occuring in the 360s.

The only person I know who has a 360, has the exact same problem mentioned and it's outside warranty.

Is that on ALL 360's? Or just ones bought at launch?

I've had to send mine back twice for repairs, but never red ring of death, just faulty DVD players. I still love it to pieces though!

ALL 360s! If you have an Xbox 360 that suffers the ring of death failure within THREE years of buying the console you will get it repaired free of charge. If you've paid for a repair that involved the ring of death then you will get your money back.

Every single 360 ever produced from launch up until 2008 is now covered by 3 years warranty from the date of purchase, and anyone who's paid for repairs on their 360 is going to be reimbursed. Pretty generous move on Microsoft's behalf.

Not really, there was a problem, they are dealing with it. This is the only decent way to do so.

i read the title and presumed that xbox360s all over world had simultaneously broke. like the xbox version of the brown note, they all had shat themselves at the same time.

that would have been more interesting.

It's pretty awesome that they've extended the warranty for damage control. What I find the funniest is that a lot of people are too s*** scared to mod their 360s now (dvd drive firmware hack to play burned media) because they don't want to void the warranty. If nothing else, it's a pretty effective anti-piracy measure :P

The Day The 360s Stood Still.

My launch 360 hasn't broken yet, but I sometimes have to whack the dvd drive to get it to open. I have also had 3 red rings (of death) twice but I turned it off and on straight away and it was perfectly normal. I have heard people say how they got the 3 red rings once and it was f***ed :/

Same. My 360 is 100% ok to date. For every dead console there's thousands of fine ones.

mine broke about a month back, wasn't red ring though it kept locking up, sent it back to MS, postage paid by them, had it back in just over a week with a free month's of live

can't really complain about that but some free games wouldn't have gone astray :P

yeah stores like EB in the US are quoting more of a 25% failure rate. Put it this way, out of my friends in Brisbane (incl. me) 4 out of 6 of them have died. the 2 working ones were purchased when forza 2 came out so..

one the day after launch (rlod)
mine 2 days after I got it july last year (rlod)
another friends had a f***ed hard drive out of the box (forza launch)
another friends died 2 weeks ago (rlod) (bought in jan 07)

Now that Microsoft has done the right thing about the Xbox 360's rampant hardware problems, one key question remains:
What is the failure rate for the system? MS won't say.

Now, math is not especially GP's strong suit, but if each repair costs MS $100, that translates to a staggering failure rate of 86%.
At $200, the failure rate is 43%. At $300 it's 29%. At $400, it's 22%

There is a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff we can't know here. But, based on the numbers, a failure rate between 29% and 43% would not be unreasonable. So maybe those 33% reports aren't so far off the mark, after all.
http://gamepolitics.com/2007/07/06/xbox-360-failure-rate-do-the-math/

anyway microsoft is now putting another heatsink on when repairs are being done, as the mobo is getting too hot and the cpu and gpu's are coming off the board when it warps.

It's irrelevant really, they've admitted there was a problem, and they're offering a solution to people that have that problem. Issue Over. Done. Finished.

At the end of the day, a broken XBox 360 is still better than a PS3 :P

Yer, you can use broken 360's as heaters.

Lined up a few and used them as foot warmers.

That's the number printed in my book Psycho. I also have these (as you probably do as well).

NZ 0508-555-592
India 000-800-1179 (Nothing like calling India to get Indians).

I realise those numbers aren't helpful at all, but you could try them ;)

yep finally got thru..they asked me to check the power supply etc..etc..then agreed that it was a dead unit (the three red lights) and have already emailed me the postage paid stickers etc..to send it of to NSW.

How long does it take?.. anyone who has been thru the process?

The Optic drives are "locked" to the motherboard. As the previous Xboxes hardrives were locked to the motherboard.

Pretty sure you won't be able to replace it and expect a working console.

Unless you know a way of making it work?
Do you?

i dunno if this is a norty link or not but oh well

www.xboxscene.com is always a great place for mods for your xbox. Most of the mods for the current gen xbox are pretty harmless stuff. Allowing you to change the dvd drive or enable developer mode (if you must). Or allow usb devices (it is still a pc).

Modding consoles is OK to talk about and do in Australia, at least for now.

Why is it legal again?

i got the 3rings nearly over a year ago, i called microsoft up and sent my box away, took 2 weeks and returned apparently working. 2 days later it died again sent it back this time it took a month, displeased i called every 2nd day, in the end, frutrated and upset but having a returned and working xbox i just filled out the customer satisfacation survey, flashed my drive and kept myself happy.

the end.
