You don't need to throw a massive after party no matter what country you get married in.

Plus, a reception isn't 'getting married' a reception is 'already married' ;)

I hope you're not spending an assload of money on your wedding.

I've know some silly couples (read: greedy wife) that actually take out a loan for their weddings. On the flip side, I've been to some nice $2k weddings and the rest goes on a house deposit... wonder which couple will get divorced first.

OH BURN! IT BURNS!
At least some people on QGL have some common sense.

Like all these turds that take out car loans. If you can't afford a nice car, drive a s*** car, it's not that hard to understand.

The ONLY good credit is appreciating credit. Cars, personal goods and ESPECIALLY weddings depreciate. House, shares, other investments = appreciating.

Common sense yeah?

What if you can afford a good car, but dont have the funds in the bank at said time?

If I didn't take out a 'stupid' loan on my Origonal Jeep, and my New Wrangler, I wouldn't of had as much fun the last 3-4 years.
Probably wouldn't of met some real nice people that have become friends.
Deffinatly wouldn't of been able to goto Cape York (Along the OTL) or Cross the Simpson desert. Which are all things I 'appreciate' very much.

Would I take out a loan for a Wedding? Hell no. However if thats what brings other people happines, then why not?

yeah i can see the correlation between needing to buy a washing machine and a lounge suit for your new house, and getting a loan to get married
Kat

You don't HAVE to have an expensive wedding. You don't HAVE to have that new car. You don't HAVE to have the latest plasma.

If someone wants to take out a loan because they WANT the above then 'go them'. They have to live with their financial choices.

No way would I get a loan for a wedding.
CHUB

Washing machine. Yeah.

Lounge? Meh. I got my lounge suite for $200.

I can see your point their Scooter. If it's a vehicle for work, that's acceptable. If it's a vehicle you need to travel/adventure, that's not a waste either.

It's more the people that buy a $20 - $30k car on loan purely for driving to and from work that I find stupid.

50% of people will get married once and it's a big day, so why not make the most of it and have the wedding you want? If you can pay cash for it all, then that's awesome but if you want to take a loan out to go the extra mile then I don't see the big point.

The ONLY good credit is appreciating credit. Cars, personal goods and ESPECIALLY weddings depreciate. House, shares, other investments = appreciating.

You're confusing a loan for the purposes of blowing the funds on non-tangible items such as a wedding or holiday against a loan for tangible items such as a house or car.

Also, houses, shares, investments, etc can all depreciate in value just as much as they can appreciate so there's no hard and fast rule there. Take for example all the chumps who bought T1 shares or invested in One.tel

I would prefer a perfect marriage than a perfect wedding and I think that is where some people run into issues.
So many people these days focus on the wedding and forget that it is actually a celebration of marriage. To spend a whole bunch of money on one day, in my opinion, is silly. I have been looking at the cost of weddings for us and to just get married will cost us less than $200. To wine, dine and entertain the guests we are looking at around $2000-9000, depending on what road we choose.

If I wanted to take out a loan it is no one else's business just like if someone else chooses to do into debt for their perfect day it is none of my business. However I think if people want to put so much into a single day and have it over shadow the actual marriage and commitment made (i.e. ceremony, not reception) then it isn't a good start and some people deserve a good kick up the backside.
If you can pay cash for it all, then that's awesome but if you want to take a loan out to go the extra mile then I don't see the big point.

But where will the extra mile get you exactly? That I think is the issue some people have.

cars to me are like.. knives and crossbows and learning jedi minds tricks to you

you're obviously not going to go and get a loan just for a lounge suit, if you have to go and deck out a house with furniture and white goods then a lounge would be apart of that

A history of credit makes no diff in Australia. Unless your history is one of defaulted payments, that is.

If you get the loan with the same bank it seems easier. My sister can get a loan working as a temp after one month after being out of the country for 6 years and I have to wait 6 months to even be considered for the same loan.

Or it came with the original logbook and only had 1 owner.

Add in the fact that you never have to use a mechanic for the life of the car (it's like playing a game of mousetrap on these old cars) and the parts are often free/extremely cheap. Add in the fact that you only need 3rd party insurance, that saves a few thousand a year.

Then the icing on the cake is that the bank isn't raping you 10%+ interest.

It's just my opinion, but for me it seems like a very logical choice.

So save up and buy one instead of being a little brat that can't wait.

If you are going to save $30/week for 8 weeks for a $240 lounge that you are sure to buy. Why not put that money down from the start and have your couch while you save for it? That goes if it is interest free. If you have to pay interest that would be silly for something so trivial. Unless you have cash to burn, which some people on this forum have.

Interest free loans for stuff like couches, tv's and all that are great, as long as you can afford it and are sure to pay it all off before the hefty interest kicks in, and also the nasty late payment fees that usually sneak around in the background.

theres not really any positive credit ratings in australia. only veda advantage which shows negative ratings. most companies have their own internal ratings but that's not really the same thing.

hahaha 9/10 ppl in this thread and in australia have nfi about finance

if you plan on being a deadbeat no lifer working for someone and paying off personal loans for the rest of your life.. so what..

alot of ppl do it and alot of ppl are happy doing it..

personally i would prefer to take out a business loan and actually leverage the cash you borrow to make more money

then with the excess equity your loan has generated go buy anything u want, like a new couch!!!! and car!! and russian bride! in reverse order

that way your initial loan isnt sucking the life out of you while your trying to build up to the next step in your financial life and you make all your money and personal equity potential work for you

having debt is actually a good thing.. it's what you do with that debt which is the key to success
