Hey, anyone know where you can go to get a Wiikey or similar installed in Brisbane?

Yep I got it done last week after my brother bought a Wii. From what I understand, Modchips are legal in .au if they bypass region coding. So we can now play NTSC games that we collect overseas.

It basically goes like this:

1. Go and order the Wiikey Modchip + Installation from OzModchips for $45 upfront (just for the chip) via credit-card on their site.

2. A Brisbane modchipper contacts you and you rock up with your Wii, come back 90 mins later when it's done and you pay $55 for the actual install.

Ozmodchips basically sends a bunch of Wiikeys to the modchippers every week upfront so that there isn't any delay in shipping your Wiikey to them. Hence the whole process from online CC purchase to physically installed can be under 24 hours.

So all up it costs $100, 90 minutes and an unfortunate trip to either Redcliffe or Marsden depending on which side of Brisbane you chose (take spare tyres with you in case they get swiped when you stop at a traffic light).

kind of a stupid question really. like any form of illegal modification its at your own risk, not just for banning you online but for voiding your warranty and other such things.

From my understanding the modchips target the DVD drive, not the main part of the console. Hence the "Stealth Mode" claim by the different modchip manufacturers.
but for voiding your warranty and other such things.

The store that installed my brother's modchip put their own sticker on the console and said that we have a 1 year warranty with them on the entire console as long as we don't remove the sticker.

or you could just buy the chip and solder it yourself if you have the equipment + skills.
I managed to get mine done with a cheapy soldering iron from dick smiths.

I wouldn't for a couple of reasons:

1. Your warranty is gone if you do it yourself. Getting it professionally done voids your official warranty but the modchipper gives you his own warranty to make up for it.

2. Opening up, soldering and reassembling a console can be more trouble than it's worth. If you stuff up you are f***ed. A professional modchipper is obligated to replace it free of charge if he stuffs up.

3. Probably quicker to get a pro to do it as they've done it a million times before and won't need to waste any time reading manuals, downloading chip-test and configuration ISOs and figuring out how it all works.

And yes, this is coming from an electrical engineer who modchipped a Gamecube a while back. It's so not worth doing it yourself unless the console is old and either failure doesn't bother you, or you have heaps of time on your hands :)

yeah it's the simple outsourcing concept. In this case it's much easier to get someone else to do it
