Would it have anything to do with the hardware or just software issues?
It speeds up around about 4/5 mins each day *edited title because I got it wrong* |

It is set up to sync but only does it every one or two weeks so I manually do it each day.

Busted mobo probably, just set your time sync program to run every 30 minutes or something instead.

How are you able to adjust your time sync period? Depends which one your using, if it's the inbuilt XP one then follows these instructions at http://www.timetools.co.uk/support/windows-xp-ntp-time-server.htm
Then use these commands to set the NTP server;

A dead or overvoltage battery isn't going to cause what you've described here. In fact being out by that kind of amount is very strange. Just like the other system clocks, a timer clock uses a piezoelectric crystal, which generates a wave based on how much pressure is exerted on it, not based on a voltage passed to it or anything like that. I don't know how much it would take to alter it by this kind of figure, but basically it would indicate too much pressure on the piezo.
The clocks I'm used to dealing with claim 1 thousandth of a second every 36 hours, used for basic motor sport. Of course, we use more accurate clocks as well in the higher grade equipment. As said above, sync to an ntp server in the meantime. time.iinet.net.au, time.optusnet.com.au, time.telstra.com ... there's a good start. Please don't use tier 1 servers :P |

I use NetTime syncing from oceania.pool.ntp.org. Free, open source.

What makes you think it is out by 4 minutes?
If the time is being reset by some software you are running and you check against the watch on your hand at the end of the day... Then BAM! the time is out by 4 minutes, I'd say it has just run your program and your watch is wrong :) But seriously if the crystal on your mobo is stuffed and you are gaining time over a day, I would not use that Motherboard for anything mission critical. All types of unknown errors can creep into software with an unreliable internal clock, not to mention it runs the cycle of the CPU itself (well the use too run off the same crystal back in the day and assume it's the same today)... So throw the mobo away and start again |

i'd suggest using something a bit more reliable as a measure rather then the time you pick your daughter up from school...

yeah my computer does this too ever since I got it, but it goes out by a maximum of about 4 minutes (as opposed to gaining steadily each day)
never was able to figure it out |

The actual length of one day is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.09 seconds. So lets say one clock you're looking at uses a 24 hour convention, the other goes by the earth's actual rotation (though I guess that's a bit weird) then you could be out by about four minutes a day.

Please don't use tier 1 servers :P why not? I use time-b.nist.gov because the internets told me to. Anyone else recently had windows unable to sync with any time server at all? Mine stopped working a few months ago yet both my routers can sync, if I use a 3rd party program to sync it, it works but the built in POS xp one on all 3 of my computers failed. now answer me this, how does my analouge watch become an hour fast and make me go to work stupidly early? HEY? ANSWER ME THAT ONE!#!$ because it relies on cogs & magnets & is a cheap pos? You overwound it if it's a wind up one? Your uncle drives a delorian? edit: oh and, a certain speed hack for quake2 years ago used to f*** with your system clocks and after a bout of speed hacking the clock would be a few hours out. last edited by whoop at 19:59:45 26/Apr/07 |
