Ya gotta login to the QUT network from home using the QUT SAS Client, which basically sets up a VPN through your internet connection.
POP and SMTP server is: mail.qut.edu.au Check Login using Secure Password Authentication - fill in your username and password for incoming mail server too. Check "My server requires authentication" for outgoing mail server, go to settings for it and fill in your username and password. VPN client has to be running to access the mail server (pretty lame yes). Might have changed with the new email system - this is the settings from my outlook which i no longer use because its too much effort logging in etc. |

^ Then you can't reply as your QUT account, and most lecturers/tutors/support emails do not accept external emails.
