I'm sure if she is made aware of the support and messages from the people of QGL then it will all be a help to her. I know how much Mav loved the people (yes even Kat) in these forums and that the messages of support were very special to him.

that is f***ed i hope you don't get screwed around like my missus has been. she has a brain tumor and we've been to 2 different hospitals and seen numorous doctors and we are still no closer to a solution than when we started 12 months ago. Go overseas to Europe, best doctors in the world are found there.. Doctors here in Aus are a joke, just money hungry noobs. Reasoning: My woman was visiting me here in Aus and whilst she was here she jumped on a bike then fell off and broke a bone in her wrist. Ofcourse we didn't find this out until she went back to her home country in Lithuania (in europe). When she fell off her bike I took her to emergency in the PA hospital. She had quite a few xrays taken and the doctor examined the xrays. He could not find the fracture and consulted with his "superiors" (other more experienced docs) and they couldn't see any fractures either. Due to the pain and incase it was really broken, they put her arm in like a "semi" cast that wasn't fully hardened and let her be like that for 3 weeks till she went home.. When my woman went back to europe, she saw her doctor there, he/she looked at the xrays and within seconds spotted exactly where the fracture is, the docs over there couldn't believe the competency of the docs here. Oh and just remembered, I had a health problem that I consulted a "Specialist" for. I was already taking something for it but it WASN'T working effectively (prescribed by a GP). The doc who specialised in this type of health problem knew a prob was there but wasn't able to diagnose what it was. He then asked me if what I was taking was helping, i said yes and he told me "well then keep taking it". I couldn't believe I was so naive and I still paid the c*** for the expensive consultation fee. A few weeks later I flew over to europe to visit my woman, I saw a specialist there diagnosed my problem instantly and put me on the right medication and resolved my problem.. Again the doc (in europe) asked me what I was taking, I told him and he shook his head in total disbelief and shame. Those are just a couple examples, my m8 also fainted 3 times without warning, collapsed on the ground each time" within a span of 5 minutes. Took him to Emergency, he was there for 4 hours and the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him. I just hope that if anything ever happens to me, I hope it happens when I'm holidaying in europe or something cause I can't trust the incompetent f***s here. |

yeah i know. the f***ed thing is she went to the doctors complaining of some s*** so he order some blood test. "nothing on them". then we went and saw my family doctor one of the few docs around he saw it straight away so we went and got ct scans and took them to the gp he says you need to go to the emergency ward now she is bleeding into her brain. so off we go and we sit in the waiting room for like 2 hrs wait to be seen. then we see some quack doctor who says not to worry bleeding is normal for this thing go home come back in 6 weeks. so we are waiting for 6 weeks to see someone about it, and noone has told us wtf is going on.
so 6 weeks later we go back and they go you have a tumor in your purtuitry gland, so you need to take this medication to help get you hormones back to normal. so she starts taking the meds and on the first day passes out at the station on the way to work. so we went back and said she can't take them so he gives us a second lot and says come back in 6 weeks. so she starts taking the meds and she is getting really bad headaces, they are so bad we go back and the doc say stake 8 panadine forte a day and the max amount of nurofen. that is a lot of f***ing drugs she can barely talk let a lone go to work. so she takes time of work and we go back in 6 weeks like we are told and after telling them that she can't work he says she should go on to center link for disability payments. f*** tards anyway we go back and see the doc again and we tell him she can't keep doing this. she is miserable, she can barely do anything. so they say we will refer you to a nurologist to talk about surgery. we saw the nurologist on friday and she tells us the becuase the first f*** head gave her the medicine to fix her hormones she doesn't think she will be able to have surgery because the meds change the form of the tumor to look like the purtuitary gland so they can't tell the difference. so now 12 mths later we are told after being put on all sorts of meds that they don't think surgery is going to work, and now they are sending us back to the hormone specialist (the first doc) to try more meds becuase there incompitence has screwed up the chance of fixing it. i hate the medical system in aus. i wish i had the money to fly over to europe and get her fixed so she can be normal again. and all the doctors treat us like f*** wits because we complain to them that it isn't working and s***. f*** you would think that after 10 years at school you would be good at your job |

The medical system in this country is becoming a joke. Are there any medical stuff-up forums out there where people can relate their medical horror stories?

Best thing you can do is read up as much as you can about things you are suffering from. Just because someone is a Doctor doesn't mean they know everything about human physiology, they know lots and sometimes that can be a problem. In a way it is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. I'm sure a good humble doctor would welcome a patient who can quickly point them in the right direction where they can then apply their knowledge of human physiology and medicine. |

Thanks for the PM's people and i concur with the comments about the health system, but its also up to the patient to do his / her own research also in my opinion..

I've given up on doctors actually knowing anything so I educate myself and find doctors who will at least listen and work with me. Yeah you're right, 8 years of studying and continuous on the job training pales in comparision to your google/wiki skills |

one of the hardest things to get across to doctors in this country is that when you say you feel sick or are in pain they don't believe you. then they try to tell you it is nothing but no one knows you body better than you do.

You don't know what you're talking about Astroboy.
When it comes to complex and/or rare conditions, doctors often have very little experience and understanding relevant to that particular patient. The worst type of doctor of all are the ones who have a god-complex. They think they know everything and put the blinkers on to anything and everything else. Medicine is continually evolving in every area - it is impossible for doctors to keep up in every department. And besides, you'd be stupid not to learn everything you possibly could on a condition you have, to make sure you're getting the best treatment possible. Just because someone has "Dr." before their name doesn't mean they have the answer to every and any medical problem under the sun. The real world isn't like House. |

Like most professions 90% of doctors have NFI idea what they're doing. Reminds me of Leonardo in "Catch me if you Can".

Having had quite a bit to do with Docs in the last few years I can honestly say I only met one cocksnap. The other docs who have operated on me like 9 times in the last three years have all been awesome. I had to have two spinal surgeries in the last two weeks over Easter believe it or not, my luck continues with my rooted spine.
But my Surgeon once again did his thang and has basically saved me alot of grief ect...AND the guy tells me he will just bulk bill me and there will be NO Gap!.. I said WTF?..he said " mate you've been through enough s*** these last few years and you have 'frequent flyer' points with me hehe and we are cutting you some slack"..even the anethnetist waived his gap. Find someone in Europe to do that for you! |

cancer is a pretty tricky one
before you write off the doc consider nobody has cured the friggin thing my old man died from cancer(s) and really the worst thing for him was the chemo... it's extremely difficult to find the right dosage for each patient. Personally i use bulk billers for the usual crap (prescriptions/checkups/accidental damages/etc) but if I'm actually feeling genuinely sick I cough up the dollars and see a real doctor... this is thankfully pretty rare so no dramas there. That said I do feel that when a patient is really sick (ie you see multiple specialists for a particular condition) that is when the costs really mount up and to be frankly honest some of the proceedures, I still feel to this day as being more of a organ grinder for the doc holiday house fund than being practical.. |

Doctors here in Aus are a joke, just money hungry noobs. My grandmother is still alive thanks to Doctors in Australia, if she had of been sick in Europe as you put it, she probably would not have been so lucky. Please don't say that. |

Once again, without surprise, Toll is one of the few people in here with half a clue that isn't /keyboardwarriorragerant.
The more you know the harder it is to fine point something. It's like saying.. hmm my PC won't post... YES IT MUST BE THE PSU! If the psu is the only thing you have ever experienced or know exists. When you know more about an entire computer you start to think "hm it could be this that, or that or this.. we'll test for this first and begin to narrow it down" etc. Do you necessarily get it second time you boot up? or third? If they can't figure it out or medications are proving to be ineffectual they should send you onto a specialist... If he/she can't figure it out.. Use your awesome google prowess that's so mighty and cure the disease yourself? I think what you want is a crystal ball, not a human doctor. Or maybe you should just use your zomgz awesome google skills, diagnose yourself completely without any tests and go pay for a specialist straight up mmmm? ---Not aimed at anybody in particular, except the whinging donghats--- |

If we look at it in a knowledge management perspective doctors have a lot of pressure put on them. They are expected in culture to be able to give on-the-spot diagnosis of your condition from what you say and even though there are specialised practices (obviously necessary) they are much wider than say your consulting practices. It may be a valid point to say our medical system is inferior to Europe from personal experiences but to say it sucks in general is pretty unjust.

QGL is full of "pros", think they know everthing about everything. People thinking they know more about medical issues than doctors is well over the top, YOU ARE A NERD ON A FORUM, YOU KNOW f*** ALL ABOUT ANYTHING. last edited by Astroboy at 17:36:48 18/Apr/07 |

I'm sure Adam wont mind me saying that my advice to him was to "Trust the Doctor" because they are the ones that have to tell you what the extent of your problem is and how best to treat it in their opinion. If you are not happy with what you hear, then you get a second opinion. If you don't put your trust in the doctor, then you have to find one that you do feel comfortable with. I also advised him to stay away from searching on the internet for anything to do with his g/f's cancer, until they know what they are exactly dealing with.
I am probably the first to say that it used to frustrate the hell out of me that Mav wouldn't trust his doctor.. but he did have, what I would say, was a very good reason for that. |
