After my factory overclocked xfx 7900gt has started artifacting and doing weird s*** at it's 'default' clock speeds I wouldn't be going the factory overclocked route.

I got an (factory overclocked) XFX 7600GS AGP... Didn't see a whole lot of point going higher then that cos my CPU is only a XP3000+ (barton core)

Also haven't had any iddues with artifacts.

I've just set it back to real default speeds and it's been sweet for the last few weeks now.

I personally wouldn't bother spending 400 odd on a agp video card, when some time soon you will have to buy a pci-e mobo. upgrade the whole thing and save yourself some money.

I've got a 9600xt factory overclocked, it still runs now without a glitch.

I'm getting a 7600GT XXX factory overclocked to 650mhz, it is pci-e also.
Research whatever it is your buying thoughly, as you may find better cards that a are cheaper or cards that are signficantly better for only a few extra $'s.

Also be sure not to overspend on a higher end video card when you have a lower end CPU and under 1gig ram. There is little point to owning a 7900gt if you have a 2100+ cpu, as a more extreme example, and no point if you have 512meg ram (asif many people do now-a-days).

I've had a bit of a look around at those cards mentioned above.
The HIS x1950pro is much better then 7800gs.

Here is a guide that compares various GPU's. At low end uses , such as playing at 1024 with no AA both cards are very similar. However, as you push the cards harder the x1950pro pulls ahead, sometimes by a significant margine.

If you buy one of those cards, remember that you are paying extra for the overclocking, a stock x1950 is around the $300 mark, so is the extra oommf worth $100 extra? That is up to you. I personally think that getting a oomfed up card for extra $'s is a good way to go, rather then getting a down speced higher end card for around the same price.

I picked up an AGP HIS X1950Pro from Gamedude a couple of months ago, and I must say it is rather explicitally pornographic at pumping eye candy out of GTR2, Richard Burns Rally and rFactor.

It is true, ATI have much better support for their high end cards in Vista. However with correctly working drivers/operating environment the Nvidia cards still own ATI.

Right now if you are a serious gamer you'd be retarded to solely use Vista so it doesn't really matter how good ATI's vista support is.

Now if we could just combine the two strengths of powerful cards and excellent drivers we would have a wiener.
