I am moving house to capalaba, losing my optus cable connection and going to bigpond cable..

The question is: can i use my D-Link ethernet broadband router to share the connection?

I think bigpond cable has some sort of nasty tea timer and i may need a computer logged in and going all the time if i want to share... which sucks..

Also, i have a motorola SB5100 surfboard cable modem, can i use this?

Whats the go?

You need to activate the modem's MAC address for your account, simply ring the billing department & tell them you need to activate an account.

Depending on the dlink router, it might have a login client built in, mine does. If not then yes you'll need one pc on all the time the others need the net logged into their stupid client thing. I did receive an email a while ago informing me they were doing away with that and sending out new firmware to the modems so the modems actually log in but as I've heard nothing more on this I figure the email was probably bogus/phishing or something.

not sure on that brand, but I know several routers sold in aus have a bigpond login client built in. I have a belkin one, about 18 months or so old. It can log into bigpond cable no problem and takes care of keeping the heartbeat up and making the connection stay up.

I used to use an SB4200 which they supplied me when I first got the account 4 or 5 years ago. I recently changed to the 'extreme' plan which can go faster than old-style cable - but you suposedly need a modem upgrade to be able to take advantage of the higher speeds. The one they supplied me for that is a motorola SB5101 which sounds kind of close to yours, so you'll probably be fine.

As long as you can also put up with crap billing, over expensive internet and drop out and disconnects youll be fine.

Screw the 24Mb* Adsl2, get your expensive 11Mb* Cable! :P

probably depends where you are for disconnects. I've been over here at hillcrest for 4-5 years and had cable the whole time and it's the most reliable non-business internet connection I've ever, ever seen, in fact it's more reliable than a lot of business connections I've seen - such as our business internode connection for example.

it's _mega_ fast and because a 10gb cap doesn't bother me, it's about $80 a month

uploads suck completely though

I've had bpa cable for like 5 or 6 years or something and I can only remember it ever being seriously DOWN 2 or 3 times, usually around the time a really bad storm appears. Causes range from wankers who take out the pole the cable is strung on to telstras' inability to waterproof anything. I have a feeling that if I could get dsl here it'd be the most unreliable internet connection EVER. When it rained my 56k used to drop to like 28.8 or worse, my phone lines are underground so telstra weren't in too much of a hurry to replace/fix/whatever them. I dunno if they're fixed now, they might be.

I get 1MB (8mbits) per second from high profile sites like ausgamers, microsoft, gamearena (obviously) and with the help of flashget and it's multiple parts you can get awesomely fast speed from most any site that supports multiple ip connections.

please explain? I get a bill, I pay it, my internet works, how is that crap?

Tel$tra have done very rude things to me and many others in the past, mainly when Ziggy was in pow0r. Thanks to people like Trog and the team, Tel$tra at least have a little something going for them. I use Gamearena severs from time to time.

I think the only GA servers I've played games on were perhaps the cs version of quake3 what was that? urban combat? something like that. I avoid the (actual) cs servers like the plaigue, they're usually full of retarded little kids who only know 3 words, 2 of them are swear words and the 3rd isn't technically even a word.

I miss that q3 cs mod :(

The Ga servers are actually quite good these days. Hardly any hackers because cs-source seems to be better at stopping them and banning them automatically. There is alot of safegaurds built into the servers now keeping them pretty clean and fun. Plus playing on GA servers, doesn't count to your account usage which is handy.
