Hmm Filemaker's relationship handling is pretty gay.
Look up Relational Information / Relationships in the manual / help file. In FM7 its under something like file -> define -> database then select relationship tab. From memory. |

In the database I've written here, I use a customer code which is generated as an ongoing serial number each time a new record is created. This number is used to tie all records together in each part of the database. As Obes said, just to the relationships tab of "define database" ("ctl sft D" is the shortcut)
In your Purchase order database, create fields which duplicate the fields from your supplier DB and pricelist DB. After that, create a "lookup" for each field so they know where to get the data when you throw in your common customer code or whatever you are using to tie the records all together. Happy to help if I can. |

your suppliers and prices table will be pretty basic suppliers: -Supplier_Name -Address -other info you wanna put Prices: -ProductID -Supplier_Name -details etc. with prices your going to want to have more info i'd imagine, something like a uniqueID for your items, "product ID" etc for a field, make it a unique field also, then have a "supplier" field as you want to detail who has the item, once you've done that, create a relationship between suppliers table (Supplier_name) and prices table (supplier_name). Now with your PO part, not sure how you wanna handle it, but you could always set an index for a unique value, like have a field that begins with PO-0001 and just adds 0001 as a new field is created, PO's filemaker uses portals to convey data from 2 tables in a tabulated form, things like cascading referential integrity, what you'd find in acces doesn't quite work the same filemaker, you basically use portals and lookups to do the talking, its pretty easy software to use once you get the hang of it. try using access aswell, they perform pretty much the same tasks, have the same type of relationships, 1 to 1, many to 1, many to many, 1 greater than 1 etc, also has self joining relationships so if you know how to use one, the other is just as easy. what you could start with is the PO template filemaker comes with, its got the supplier / PO table sorted out, but the inventory, or item list isn't there, you could always set one up yourself though using the template though, it'd be a start though. contact me if you want some more info dantafe1@hotmail.com |

mysql > * mySQL is not an industrial-grade DB platform. PostgreSQL > mySQL. SQL Server > mySQL. It is however very cheap (hah!) and widely-used. |

A system I designed a few years ago runs postgresql for all it's db needs. We even have db replication across java initialised ssh tunnels to systems from the UK to Brisbane.
postgres > mysql && mysql > * We had oracle licenses (3x) and dumped them because it's not worth the trouble f***ing with their libraries and finding bugs. |

Thank you everyone in this thread except for the following people: Cl1nt It is actually alot more complex than how I explained it, however, and I'm going to need to go into some real deep scripting s***. I've learnt everything I need to know about computers myself, so this will just have to be another :) Maybe expect some emails defcon last edited by casa at 14:16:46 22/Feb/07 |
