I have been fiddling around with my settings because my dl speeds have been very s***, at the moment i am getting around 2-10kbs, I use to get 30-100 easily before new computer/format etc.

I have looked around at different sites such as http://torrentfreak.com/optimize-your-BitTorrent-download-speed/

i have changed all these setting in my client but i have seen no change what so ever.
I have changed:
max ulpoad speed - 160kbs
max dl speed- 950kbs
max connected peers per task - 260
max upload slots - 34

I am running: bitlord 1.1 & btengine, i also have windows firewall on (which is soon to be change to zone alarm) and i dont have a router.

I have the 1.5mb optusnet dsl and i know that i should be downloading faster than 1-10kbs, and i also check to availability of the torrent so its not that there arnt enough peers/seeders etc

An obvious suggestion, but is the firewall port forwarding correctly?

step 1
dump all that s*** and get utorrent

step 2
setup upload to be like max 10% of your max upstream connection (for starters, you can up it more if you like to give back to the community, start low to get it working)

step 3
use the handy port forward check (speed test, check port forwarding (NAT resolution, whatever it is))
when port is forwarded successfully

step 4
proffit

I second uTorrent.

Dont exceed your upload bandwidth otherwise you'll choke your connection and get crappy speeds.

I've also heard around these parts that you need to set your upload bandwidth >8kb/s otherwise the client will throttle your speeds behind the scenes. Dunno how try that is.

i third utorrent, however i don't set a global upload rate, set them individually so you wont limit your download speeds.

if you over upload, you will saturate your connection and everything will go to s***

if you dont upload, you're not a very nice person and need to learn to share

with my adsl2 connection (1024mbs upstream) i set it to about 70k/s for happy times

so thats about 70%

regularly see 500/600k/s dls

installed utorrent, changed the speed settings to xx/1mbit and changed to port and checked that it is open. Now its going at about 10-15kb :S this is so gaybar, why cant it just work

er, try xx/64k

xx/1mbit woudl be well and truly flooding your connection

1500/256 connection would max out its upstream ata bout 32k/s

u were trying to upload at 92k/s

My optus cable maxes out at about 16 kb/s. I set Utorrent to 10 kb/s, this allows for all the extra upload bandwidth from connection overheads.

+1 vote for utorrent.
I've also heard around these parts that you need to set your upload bandwidth >8kb/s

It's 6kB/s and yes, utorrent will punish you by capping your download speed if it's any less.

utorrent is the absolute bomb.

Is maxing out at 30 - 35k alright for 1500k adsl? Or is something wrong?

No, you should get about 150kB/s unless it's a crappy public torrent where everyone leeches and immediately quits.

As mentioned earlier .. what did you set as your upload speed limit, and how many connections have you set the program to?

On 1500/256 i set my upload to 19KB/s. I max out my download (160KB/s).

On 8000/384 i've set my upload to 29KB/s. I get 760-780KB/s

Alright I'm finally over the max 35k... its been up to 75k at the moment.

What should my connections be set at?

What should my connections be set at?

It depends what you are downloading and what router you have (some can't handle a high number of connections)

Try setting it to 100 connections per torrent, 200 connections maximum and see how you go. If it's too slow, increase the per-torrent one. If your router/connection is choking, then reduce.

Upload slots per torrent can be left at 5.

Under speed setting i set 'connection type' to xx/256
I then wen options/preferences/connection and set Global Maximum upload to 19 and queuing/"maximum active torrents" to 4 and queuing/"maximum active downloads" to 2

omg I love you QGL.

I've been stuck at 30k max ever since torrents were created.

Now I'm getting 100k+ non stop and up to 140k :D

EDIT: Took a glimpse before and it got up to 168k/sec... I need a bigger limit then 15gb... any recommendations?

Another thing - do NOT use the default port employed by any BT program - set it to some random port well over 56000 and configure your router to that random port.

Why? Because ISPs can and DO throttle popular BT ports.

20/1mbit dsl

I don't set an upload or download limit, I get over 2mb/s on torrents no drama's.

I only limit uploads when I want to play games...

Have you run the xp tcp patcher? Not much point setting utorrent up to use so many connections if your install of XP SP2 is only allowing 10.

Interestingly, while this restriction still exists in Vista, and the LvLLord hack hasn't been updated (I think?) - Vista + uTorrent seems to work regardless - consistant 600down/70up for me on DSL.

when you test your port forwarding, it definately tells you the port is ok?

what torrent are you dling?

make sure its a popular torrent

check the logger, and tell us any errors its reporting

mine always has an error opening windows firewall, but i dont use it, so thats fine

I have zone alarm and have gone into firewall settings > add new expert rule > added port "5800" for eg. used '5800' as the listen port in my torrent program.
http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/3528/firewallcrapjp7.th.jpg

used the port forwading tester in utorrent and it says that the port is open.

I am getting a variety of torrents most of them have more leechers than seeders.

For eg i am getting torrent x and it has 2000 seeders and 3000 leechers and i am getting 10kbs.

I am also getting torrent y which has s/400 and l/600 and am getting around the same 5-10kbs

I have checked the logger (event viewer in admin tools im guessing is what your talking about?) and there are no messages saying anything about ports etc

try going into preferences -> connection -> uncheck enable upnp mapping

close down utorrent and restart, report back in logger whats up

also, turn off zone alarm

Yeah, upnp is to be avoided if you have control over the firewall/network (which you do).

Next, set that port number over 56000, not 5600. Make sure that whatever number you choose to pick (e.g. 56333) is the same in both the BT client and the Firewall's port forwarding rules.

Lastly, if you're using uTorrent (you did switch right?) then look at the colour codes for the torrent's status. Green = yay! Yellow = likely firewall issue. Blue = Tracker is down? Red = Ohnoes! or Hurry up and get a connection happening already dammit new 24 is out uu!!

Try to download part of this Linux ISO (lol) to rule out a s***ty public torrent:

http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/torrents/KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.torrent

I was able to max out my connection at 150kB/s in under 30 seconds.

Just confirming that you changed this to xx/64 or xx/128 as suggested by someone else earlier?

yes i changed it to that:

options > speed guide looks like this

upload limit: 8kbs
slots : 2
connections per torrent : 50
global : 75
max active torrent: 1
max active dl: 1

current port: eg - 58000

parabol
Posts: 2959

connections per torrent : 50
global : 75

Increase that manually (not in speedguide), as I suggested to someone else here.

Connections per torrent: 100-150.
Total Connections: 200.
Uploads slots: 5.

Try that linux ISO again with those settings.

thanks for the help :D i knew i wasnt going to get speeds like 100kbs+ with public torrents but i knew it should be faster than 10kbs.

Its going at about 20kbs average now, but thats because of the limited number of seeders
Seeds: 10 of 37 connected (150 in swarm)
Peers: 63 of 1611 connected (1668 in swarm)

Also, i have 3 10gb torrents that are 60%+ completed which i have been downloading in my old torrent client (bitlord) when i try to open the same torrent in utorrent and i put the destination, where all the downloaded files are, it doesnt read those files and restarts the download at 0%. When i re-added torrents in bitlord it normally just reads what % is done and continues from there. Is there anyway to rectify this or do i have to finish them off in bitlord?
parabol

but thats because of the limited number of seeders

No it's because there are too many leechers in comparison, sapping all of the seeder's connection limits and their upload bandwidth.

If the ratio was more like 30 seeders, 5 leechers ... you'd likely get pretty good speeds.

Upload Slots : 5
Connections (per-torrent) : 100

1. Are you sharing a connection with someone else at your place who uses torrents?
2. UPnP is off in Preferences->connections?
3. When you say the port is working, you mean the SpeedGuide port test passes?

My port is working as in i was downloading, but slowly. But when i click "test to see if port is forwarded correctly" in speed guide it says "port 57333 appears not to be open"

Also ive been to that site and ive looked up my router and gone through all the steps, created a static ip, but when i get to the step where i have to enter the password to my router after putting my ip in my web browser the default p/w isnt working and i dont think its been changed so i cant get past it.

me and my bro in law (decimate) share it and bundle with phone, so i think we pay like $50 bux a month each, for internets, phone line and phone calls

we ditched optus cable to go with them, and especially since we moved closer to a nice exchange, speeds have been awesome and reliable
