Hiya's

I've been looking at buying a remote control helicopter and thinking of getting a Blade CX 2 because of the Price and my noobyness.

Does anyone have a RC chopper?

have some glue handy, cause they are as hard as f*** to fly, and no matter how careful you think you will be, you WILL crash it.

awesome fun though.

Seriously, go to hobbyrama in stafford the guys there are awesome help and they have a simulator set up there you can fly a decent range of choppers on the simulator & see how well you go at it. Those bell helicopters you get from mr toys are easy to fly but are indoors only & you can't fly them upside down but they go forward backwards, bank left & right and spin left & right they're a full function chopper just without the upside down goodness.

I got the simulator and if I hadn't I'd have spent $20k easily on repairs/spares for a real chopper.

The one I'm looking at is an electric indoor, f/b l/r and spin. $260 compleate, with 6chan transmitter.

If I had lots more to spend I would get the EP8v2 and parts, would cost about $800 :(

$260? you can get them from hobbyone for like $100, those bell ones. They look ugly as an exsanguinated zombie baby but they're relatively easy to fly and parts are readily available. My friend up the road had one. At least they were $100 when he got his I think.

edit: hmm seems those bell things are $199 at hobbyone now, I guess it was a christmas sale or something. Oh well

The Twister Bell is $200.
Reviews seem to favour the Blade CX, partly because it uses a 2.4GHz transmitter.

That blade cx does look a hell of a lot nicer too. 2.4ghz eh, anyone with wireless routers around that might interfere with that? or would it be immune to that somehow?

"they're"
and no they're not. The counter-rotating blade design is EXTREMELY easy to fly and quite stable. My friend who has never flown a chopper before got the hang of hovering it within about half an hour or so & was moving it about. He has a short attention span though so didn't get very far but if you're patient you should be kaining around your living room within an hour.

I picked up the controller & was hovering it within about 5 minutes but that was because I have that simulator thing, the one big main gripe I had with his bell chopper was the controller. The springs in it were s***, the throttle was far too weak and you would accidentally move it while trying to spin around, and the spin spring was far too strong (which is the reason for accidentally moving the throttle).

The controller I have for the simulator has nice weak springs in the yaw/pitch/elevation/whatever the hell directions and the throttle is stiff so you don't accidentally nudge it. I guess it's all about personal preference though & what you learn on/get used to as I was used to my controller, I found his difficult to use.

Also ceiling fans and big wall mount aircon units tend to affect some smaller indoor choppers.

Ya, I went to Hobbyrama to have a look at what they have in stock, as I want easy access to spare parts also. Turns out they don't stock the Blade CX, however they have the Medivac Bell and V3 Lama. After having a lengthy chat to staff I'm leaning towards V3Lama, it is a little harder to fly then the medivac. It is also about $50 cheaper then the Blade CX which wasn't there :D

If you're really keen, have a look through the forums over at RunRyder. I would have bought one if I had a spare few grand to spend on a Bergen.

WEEEEE

To the guys that purchased fro Hobbyrama..

I've done some hunting around and their spare parts are DOUBLE the price of other soruces.
For instance, the Outer Shaft for Esky Lama is $21.50 at Hobbyrama, and are 11.50 at Wattsuprc. A 800 mAH 7.4v battery is about $45 at Hobbyrama and $28 at Wattsuprc.

There is no technical advice given at this other place, intelligance + internet gives tech advice :D
So the parts that would have cost me $101 from Hobbyrama are only costing $50 from Wattsuprc.
